Am I right in thinking that if Buckingham comes in on his own there will be a couple of coaching positions to fill? I would assume that, if he doesn’t bring any coaches with him from Mumbai, he will have one or two contacts over here. Otherwise I wonder if Lyon’s will be made permanent.

Have to say I’m a bit concerned that we’re paying so much for Buckingham when there are other much cheaper options out there like Crofts and Eustace who have direct recent experience at a higher level in English football whether that be coaching or managing. I get that we’re not privy to the recruitment process and who ‘presents’ as the best candidate but someone can present all they like but without direct experience an appointment like Buckingham is a massive unknown quantity. I hope it’s going to be a great gamble but should we take a huge gamble or should we get a safe pair of hands to hit the ground running?

A-League is provably League 1/League 2 level so don’t know where you are getting that from & he did great with a s**t New Zealand national side 🤣. So wouldn’t be paying 100’s of thousands for just anybody would we.
No, we.would be paying hundreds of thousands for someone who has a great.deal.of experience in lower quality leagues, that isn't even this country.
Whatever romance is blinding people's way of thinking.

If he gets us promoted, he will have such status!

We shall call him Des Buckinghamanger, which sounds like a Dutch pornstar, but kinda works.
And the management of Oxford United shall be on his shoulders. And his name shall be called Wonderful; the mighty tactician; the everlasting incumbent; the future prince of the Premiership; and Des.

We almost spent similar money on Jack Marriott. It's a lot of money but nothing our owners aren't prepared to pay to progress our football club. £100m stadium anyone? We are spending 600k a year on Brannagan, let alone the rest of the squad. I think it's reasonable money to spend on arguably the most important man at the football club...

You can say this as many times as you like but the board at large simply won't hear you.

That's just the way it is. Sorry.
This isn't true I'm afraid. I've just been on BetVictor and they have a book on "Do Yellows Forum members think odds are a reflection of probability" and "no" is the hot 4/9 favourite which seems pretty conclusive to me.

I love how much people take bookies' odds as an indication of genuine possibility. In cases like these, the odds are dictated by what bookies expect people to bet on, with barely any relevance to what will actually happen. It's not like Ladbrookes have an inside man in the OUFC boardroom keeping an eye on how each interview goes and sending regular updates to their bosses.

Having said that, if anyone has a tip on someone with really good odds who genuinely has a chance of getting the job, please let me know, as I've just moved to Sweden, and the price of alcohol here is insane...
I wouldnt worry to much about missing out. A few years ago when Reading were looking for a new manager a good friend told me who it was going to be. He had bumped into the managers former assistant who had been asked by said manager if he would be his assistant again at Reading. Armed with this info I checked the odds, only Betvictor had a market and he was 25/1. My Betvictor account had long been closed so spoke to a friend who opened an account and I asked them to place a fiver on the new manager every morning and every evening while he was 25/1 and to let me know if the price changed. This quiet approach wouldnt cause any suspicion........ They let him have one whole english pound on. I said close the account.

It saved me a pound.

I do understand your point. I just think given the league position we are in, I think a better choice could be someone who can get positive results quicker. I suspect Buckingham will be a slow burner

Be it on their heads if everything we've worked this season goes wrong.
Naive to think this will've passed them by.

They wouldn't be willing to do this if they didn't think it had a good chance of working.

They're not blindly throwing money around to try and get us out of a hole, and with the other - potentially 'safer' - candidates available they must have a very good idea what they'll be getting, and very strong sense that it's a price worth paying.

I assume if he comes in and gets us up as champions, you'll be singing their praises for such an astute decision?

So let me check if I've got this:

Managing somewhere isn't relevant experience of management. Not managing somewhere is relevant experience of management, as long as it wasn't done in the right place?
The relevance is at what level the management experience has been at.

I think this is about right. Football in Australia and New Zealand isn't transferable, that much is clear.

I am pretty sure this must be because the rules are different over there, but I haven't bothered to check as that would undermine my ability to cast aspersions.
