Current Player #22 Greg Leigh

Greg Leigh doesn't win goal of the month for October.
The winner, defender Michael Morrison of Cambridge United, last scored a goal for Cambridge 16 1/2 years ago as an 18 year-old trainee. [looking at Soccerbase, he's had a good career in between, playing for Leicester, Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton, Birmingham, Reading and Portsmouth, scoring some 40+ goals]

Not going too well for Jamaica. Greg Leigh started and is still on at around the hour mark.

Off injured in added time, unfortunately.

Jamaica quality for next summer's Copa America after beating Canada on away goals. Well done Greg, just hope the injury isn't too bad, although it looked muscular.

Agreed. He went down in the 92nd minute with what looked like cramp for 20-30 seconds and then was subbed off a couple of minutes later. Hopefully, he did no further damage in that time although he had to walk around half the field to get to the bench and looked to be hobbling quite gingerly at times.

Great comeback by Jamaica in the second half this evening (albeit with the winner courtesy of the softest penalty for handball you’ve ever seen). Canada’s first defeat in Toronto for 13 years.

Thought Greg played pretty well, especially after also playing 90 mins + on Saturday in the first leg in Jamaica in a morning kick off (postponed from the previous evening because the pitch was waterlogged). I suspect he saw a bit of a difference between the wingers he faces in League One each week, and Tajon Buchanan who is one of Canada’s better players!

I won’t be surprised now if Greg misses the Cheltenham game on Saturday (and that may have been the plan anyway before the injury given his two 90 min games in 3 days, several flights and jet lag).

Last thought: Greg v. Messi could be a reality next summer at the Copa America!!

Prayers for the mods next summer having to read through their 500th ‘it’s the best player in the world and Lionel Messi 🤣’ post
Anything is a step up on the 10,000 'why won't we sign a bloody left back' posts we have had to endure over the past few years. Yet another reason to love Greg Leigh, if more reasons were needed.

They've not yet announced what stadiums are going to be used for the 2024 Copa America (which got moved from Ecuador to the US because......money), but it is likely that it'll be the same ones that are going to be used for the World Cup in 2026......something of a trial run.

But while most 'soccer' fans around here are going to be rooting for Argentina and Brazil to end up playing in Philly and/or East Rutherford (both about an hour away from where I live).......I'm keeping all my fingers and toes crossed for Jamaica!

Do the club get compensation for Leigh getting injured when on international duty like they would if it was a UK player?

Bloody international breaks.
He's obviously been overplayed. Calf strains can take a while.

Suppose a slight silver lining there is that we have two cup ties in that time, both against lower league opposition so ones we should win anyway and fewer league games. The bad news to that though is obviously that assuming it’s two weeks from today, the league games he misses are all massive - today, Posh away and then Reading.

Could also be an issue with Brown being run into the ground, that’s a lot of games in a short amount of time. Maybe Thorniley to come in at LB for the cup games?

If there is one player in this squad that you don't need to worry about being run into the ground, it's Ciaron Brown.

He started 42 consecutive League games last season (once he'd forced his way into the starting line-up on Matchday 5), squeezing in 5 Cup starts and a few internationals for good measure too.

He never once appeared leggy or in need of a rest.

He's a 50+ game a season monster and exactly what we need to get us through any injury problems in the back line.
