Home Match Day Thread 22/01/2022 L1: OUFC v Sheffield Wednesday

Great win, good performance second half and I said to the person I was with Winnall would score the winner so i think I deserve most of the praise for this victory
My son said the same to me so you’ll have to share the glory with him. 🤗

For the first 40 minutes there was only one team in it. Wednesday were all over us and Bannan was dictating everything. Seddon was all over the place and Brannagan and McGaune were too far apart.

The formation switch was an effective curve ball and Wednesday didn't adapt. We were fortunate to go in level at the break, though.

We started the second half much better and their second goal was arguably against the run of play. We looked deflated at that point so the instant equaliser was a much needed shot in the arm.

Fair play to Winnall for the winner. He attacked the cross with conviction which is rare from our lot at set pieces. His general play after the goal was also better than usual - maybe motivated by being ooc in the summer? Could be to our benefit for the run in.

Overall a great result and a good second half performance. We really needed that win to stop the rot.

Final thoughts: Sykes' energy and work rate was great; no one can say he didn't play for the team today. McGuane holds onto the ball too long. McNally is first team ready - really like him. We need another left back to challenge Seddon.

Just got back. What a second half and boy did we need it, Sheff Wed bossed the first half and maybe unlucky not to be given a penalty and if I were them i would be wondering how they lost the game. Bodin, Mcnally, mcguane were immense today and stood out as our best players and I'm glad winnall got the winning goal. Will take a 3-2 win every day of the week it was exciting and nervy all the way through and the extras in the crowd will certainly want more after witnessing that.

Sounds like Karl is pissed off with a couple of non oxford players or agents in this transfer window. Let's see what happens in the next week regarding transfers .

That’s exactly why he’s annoyed. It’s non OUFC players more there agents, that are messing around. Knowing we have money, and wanting to extract more for there own pockets.

Worse thing that ever happened to football (agents).

Amazing second half against a good Sheffield Wednesday team . Best second half performance this season . Fantastic performance

How the hell did we win that!

After an awful first half, when we were totally outmuscled and outplayed, showing how desperate we are for some physicality in the squad, (and a better left back) I was amazed we went in at half time level.

But we really stepped up to the plate in the 2nd half, Robbo made some inspired changes, and the lads put in a much improved performance, showing amazing spirit and got a deserved winner!

Very happy for Winnall, he gets a lot of stick, but that was a monster of a header! Well done Sam 👏

But we can't let this result paper over the obvious cracks that have become apparent in recent weeks, yes, it's an amazing result, thanks to a great 2nd half performance, but there's lots of work to be done if we're gonna be challenging at the end of the season, and we need to make the rest of this transfer window count.

But tonight we celebrate! 🍻

Well done Robbo and the lads 👏👏

I'm sorry but I don't agree with KR, I didnt think McGuane or Bodin were particularly good, both looked too slow and indecisive, and they didn't do enough on the ball.....yes it was a great corner for Winnall's header but to my mind Bodin, McGuane and even Holland are luxury players, and can we afford to carry them? Williams is a much better option when available for his work rate, really hope he's back for the next game....

All this aside, WOOHOO!!!! COYY!! WHAT A GREAT AFTERNOON'S VIEWING!⚽💛

I quite like them. More balanced . Complimented our fans a lot a couple seasons back when we played there in the cup

The most shocking thing is one of their fans being able to get Burger, Chips and drink from the Chippy in the Ozone!

Dunno what you've been drinking this afternoon, but McGuane and Bodin are the reasons we won today. They drove us forward constantly battling and winning the ball and making progressive passes all game long, Bodin absolutely ran the show at no.10 some of the passes and touches he pulled off. I struggle to see how you can fault them two today.

In the first half I thought both teams looked dangerous going forward and dodgy at the back. But it was more in their favour as some of our defending was disastrous. They surely should have had a penalty for Seddon's challenge from behind (followed by another silly challenge and a desperate clearance).

I think Robinson deserves a lot of credit for the switch to 3 at the back, as do the whole team for showing a lot of grit throughout the match.

Absolutely need another left back. We also really needed some protection in front of the defence today. I know it was part of their plan to get the ball forward quickly but seemed noticeable how many second balls were falling to their players - a Gorrin type would have been mopping those up all day. That said, what a game!

Cannot agree. Being in Spain currently watched on laptop. Felt Bodin was very good and creative, McGuane carried the ball well and put in more of a shift but Holland was peripheral though his lay off to. CGuane for the cross and his blocked shot that fell to Matty for the second. Sykes outstanding. Branners his usual driving force. McNally makes the odd error but will be a very good player imo. Excellent game, superb result with Kane, Whyte, Henry and Williams out.

McGuane obviously has quality but he holds onto the ball far too long far too often. A couple of times he nearly got caught out in bad positions and also missed several opportunities to play an early pass that would've set us on a break. I also think he got bullied physically by his counterpart in their midfield. He has comparable qualities to Baptiste (and also is similar in the way he drifts in and out of games) but is nowhere near at the same level (yet).

Sometimes other players were to blame though not giving him an option and standing still.

We were in the family stand, as taking a friend and his little boy his first game. Excellent response to being outplayed in the first half from KR and team. They never gave up, Mark Sykes especially caught the eye carrying the ball at speed on several occasions. Thought Jack Stephens improved as the game went on, looking pretty sharp by the end of it.
Luke McNally - really like him, he is unafraid to have a go.

I did shout our YOU t**t to the person who ran on the pitch as he was escorted out - Much to the surprise of the parents around me ( forgot where I wad for a moment).

Great result - and once the momentum shifter the atmosphere really picked up.

I think this is an accurate reflection on todays game. We were poor 1st half and seem to struggle although 2nd half we played much better. Should have been 3-1 but for a poor free kick.629A6101-7380-4BE3-B6AE-537627D2A797.jpeg
