Other European European Super League

‘Sport is about getting kids out of the house’.. oh the irony when any ESL will be another Sky saturated event where plastic fans in their ‘big club’ football shirts will sit and watch it from their sofas.. Most have no idea what watching football live, at a ground, in the flesh, is all about.

I assume PSGsupporter lives in Paris and goes to see them live? I would hope so, otherwise he or she is completely missing out on what football is really about.

I support OUFC because it’s in my blood. My dad is a supporter and his dad before that. I hope PSG supporter isn’t a fan just because he likes Mbappe or the colours in the kit…

I know youve posted on here before PSG and there’s no animosity- maybe you do have true connections. I just don’t think a club like OUFC is the best place to come to try and drum up support for something that will kill grass roots football as we know it.
Grass roots sport to me, means kids.

LeBron James when younger decided to support Dallas Cowboys, he was born and brought up in Ohio. Cymric culture started in present day Western Germany/Eastern France. Celtic writing has been found in Portugal. Brittany of course, got a soft spot for Gwengamp/Guingamp. Alun Wyn Jones did a DNA test, found he was mostly of Norman descent.

As I've said on here before, my feelings for OUFC started on League Cup Final day, 1986, I was brought up not far from where Jeremy Charles is from. Dean Saunders and OUFC had a Mr Evans as manger.

No English football fan wants it.

Good fishing attempt though.

Actually, you know what - I think I do want an ESL.

Not because I would have any interest in watching it. But because if the big 6 ****ed off with all the Premier League money, then there's a chance that the rest of the English game might return to what it used to be; without the absurd amount of money at the top of the game that puts its thumb on the competitive scales and leads directly to a whole raft of football league clubs putting themselves in financial danger trying to muscle in to get a space at the PL trough.

Would be bad news for the majority of football league players, mind, as wages would have to return to sustainable levels again......

(obviously I acknowledge that this whole thread is a bad trolling attempt.......but I wanted to make the argument anyhow......)

Yeah but you've become way too American over the years so don't count as an English football fan anymore 😉

I do take your point though, but I'd rather they found a way to distribute money fairer throughout the pyramid - but that will never happen unfortunately.

Yes absolutely, the English champions would be Everton, West Ham, Southampton, or whoever, it would be more varied and we could all forget about the big six.

Who cares? I don't want to watch money. I appreciate that the PL has raised standards across the board but I'd be prepared to sacrifice a bit of that for a more sustainable and organic future.

Organic future?

Will the new stadium have an allotment on SB? That might convince FoSB that we should come to Kidlington.

Oooh, are we following the Vicarage Road model?
Wonder if the allotments are still there, been a while since my last visit to Vicarage Road. It certainly helped with crowd dispersal, no need to keep the away fans locked in because by the time they managed to get round the allotments and back round the ground, all the home fans had gone!

Not sadly according to Google maps as it looks like they've built some Hospital buildings/Parking* on it.

*The parking would never be allowed in Oxford unless it was for Uni research staff.

But then the EPL will be far less appealing to overseas viewers, so less money.

Which is my whole point, really.

Money has screwed up the English football pyramid.

In the 30 years that the Premier League has been running, we've had only 7 different Champions (Man U, Man C, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Blackburn & Leicester). Hell, since the turn of the millenium, there have only been 8 different teams finish in the top three (add Spurs and Newcastle, subtract Blackburn).

Maybe if the overseas viewers and all the money disappeared into a European Super League, then we might get back to a football pyramid that was not wholly dominated by the select few. And maybe less Championship clubs would start running up nine figure debts trying desperately to chase the riches.

One of the great sporting ironies is that, aside from being closed systems, from a sporting perspective the major US leagues all run on vastly more socialist principles than their European equivalents.

Hard wage caps, competitive balance taxes, amateur drafts.....everything here is designed to take the advantage away from the richest and most powerful few teams. And it generally works great - far, far less predictable year-on-year.

Europe could take some lessons in how it sets up its sports league, and the US could take some lessons in how it sets up everything else!

If this was to go ahead sky and BY would pull the plug on the English football leagues and concentrate on the greedy fuckers in the super league. Also I would hope any player in the league will face a life time band from international football

Room for carrots and parsnips and the odd occasional sun flower

You ok? There are pills you can take for that.
f**k odd with your we need this and f**k grass root football in every country. Yes if it happens van the greedy bastards from representing their respective countries.
How the f**k have PSG kept writhing FFP I’ll never know as you didn’t win the Champions league like OSG said to justify buying Messi and co.
Now jog on and toodle pip.

The premier league still has more teams win it though than other European leagues, that’s despite being the richest, if Arsenal were to win it that will be 6 different teams in just over 10 years, in Germany you only have one team win it. It’s the champions league that causes the divide at the top (and the problems in other countries with one/two team dominance).

The best solution would be to return European competition to two legged knockout and reduce the money there, would improve that competition from the absolute dross group stages to something a bit more interesting and reduce the gaps within the top flights.

Never going to happen though, the prize money will increase to the biggest clubs in the champions league and make it (more of) a de facto super league and the clubs will stay in there domestic leagues until it becomes financially unviable for the prem clubs, which may never happen.

It's the small minded Brits who are holding back PSG, Rangers, Marseilles, Ajax etc. It's the small minded naval gazing "English" who have stopped Rangers from joining the PL.
