if you like old history type stuff

Thats awesome, and made me laugh a few times too... especially the one where the guy urinates and kills someone.. must've been a strong stream

Apparently a similar map is being developed to trace the aftermath of our upcoming game against Reading.

It seems a big problem with the 'away fans' ie scholars coming into the city creating issues

so many places for a drink in 1883

Medieval Oxford had a murder rate 50 times higher than 21st century English cities! Despite what people often say, life has become much safer and less violent. Interesting that students were behind a lot of the violence, they are generally fairly harmless these days though they get drunk and cause minor damage.

This is partly why the University had own court until the 1960s - otherwise the town court would have been clogged up with student cases.

For quite a while Oxford University was basically a religious institute where wealthy/nobles younger sons went, they were not particularly religious or clever but it was a career path for the sons who wouldn't inherit. Bit of a myth that Oxford University was always an elite institute of learning, didn't exactly have a lot of competition at the time. These younger sons were quite violent, more Bullingdon prison during a riot than Bullingdon Club on the P**s, at the time the nobles were still quite happy to kill you rather than pay someone else to do it.

You are right that society is far less violent than previously, I suppose not carrying around swords, daggers etc all the time helps with that, I have a feeling that traffic jams, the Next boxing day sales and parish council meetings would would end up far more brutal and bloody if we all walked around with deadly weapons still.

Certainly worth doing a runner in those days when you’ve just stabbed someone several times. Grab your chattels and off you go, no Crimewatch to hunt you down then.
