Manager/Coach Des Buckingham

Managers out of work who I’d happily appoint to replace Des Buckingham:

Michael Duff - Good manager with Barnsley & Cheltenham.

Alex Neil - Good manager with Norwich, Preston & Sunderland.

Gary Rowett - Good manager at Birmingham, Burton & Millwall.

Mark Bonner - Done a very good job at Cambridge.
Always rated Duff, no nonsense manager who clearly commands respect from most within the game. Stint at Swansea didn’t work out but it was never going to give Swansea perceived style of play. Also was at our game with Barnsley recently, not sure if he still lives locally to Cheltenham or was just seeing some old friends from Barnsley.

Rowett is an interesting one I read something recently from Millwall fans saying they definitely wouldn’t take him back as his style was terrible, staggering considering he nearly got them in the championship playoffs.

So frustrating, we go to Pompey play brilliant, ok we lost but the performance was top class, since then we have put in some shocking performances with virtually the same players. WHY. What the hell has gone wrong, is it more than just Buckingham, or is their something going on behind closed doors we dont know about, at the moment we wouldnt beat Oxford City Reserves

With RR - I'm not sure I subscribe to a lack of effort. He was still getting about the pitch on Tuesday, still ranting at the ref and throwing himself about - he was even back in his own penalty area (I wouldn't say he was helping out the defense though, because him deciding to fanny about rather than clear the ****ing ball led directly to the third goal). But he's not finding the space he was, his passing is not at the quality it was and his decision making under any form of press is ropey in the extreme. Some of that is coaching, and him not seeming to 100% know his role.....but some of it is just a player bang out of form who has let it muddle his thinking. Needs a rest for at least a couple of games.....and thankfully we have multiple players who can come in and play at #10 (Bodin, Goodrham hopefully, even Henry).

MM is a different kettle of fish because we've seen this over and over from him. In each of the past four seasons, we've seen 1-2 months from him where he looks like the best player in the division. Getting on the ball, shrugging off defenders, driving forwards. But then he reverts back to this timid, shell of that player whose first instinct under any form of pressure is always to pass the ball backwards. I know back in September, people were panicking about his contract coming to an end and wanting to put a massive deal in front of him, and there was a big sigh of relief when it was confirmed that we had another year's option. Now I'm not even sure that we should be exercising it.....for the presumably decent wage we're paying him, could we not get someone more consistent over the course of the season? Watching Josh Sheehan play on Tuesday was a reminder of what we should be expecting from a holding midfielder - and we haven't seen that from MM for the best part of six months.
The problem in the short term in CM is if not him, who else? Matete apparently has a knock, and was rubbish anyway the three games he started. McEachran has disappointed most of the season. If he's fit, maybe give Oisin Smyth a try? It's supposed to be his best position, and he at least has some physical presence.

Then Goodwin has to start on Saturday if he's got 60 minutes in him. I thought he looked our least worst player at Bolton (although helped by their man mountain being subbed off) and we need to start getting him some minutes, and seeing what he's got about him. I'm neutral as to whether you bench Harris, or stick him out wide and bench Murphy.
Nor did I until I witnessed it on Tuesday after he was at fault for one of the goals.

The ball was played forward and after a 'effort' to chase after the ball he suddenly pulled up and started a very flimsy limp to imply he had pulled his hamstring. He then carried on wandering around while giving hopeful looks towards the bench.

It was so obvious that he had tossed it off before that by just doing what he wanted (not clearing it and trying to be too clever on the edge of the box before the 3rd) but by pulling up the way he did just confirmed what a shithouse he is.

What do Des and Wayne Rooney have in common
They both took over clubs doing very well and dragged them down the league

Buckingham won’t be sacked this season. Period. A half-eaten pork sausage has more chance of making the right decision than our vacant board.
DB seems like a nice chap, but he’s in the wrong job. Ironically he’d probably manage a premier league team better than us; he seems to have little understanding of what is required to motivate and get this level of player (average League One) performing.
He will continue here as we slip to 10/12th place. He will be given a budget but not as large as we all hope for and expect. We will continue to spend it on half-fit reasonable players (Cheltenham are laughing at us regarding the Goodwin saga, believe me).
Ten games into the new season we will be mid table and the noises from the vacancies will be “we’re doing OK”.
Buckingham will remain in post.
if we start the new season with him still in place, season tickets will plummet. Which is why I suspect he won't be.

Or, he is being coached wrong or asked to do an unfamiliar role. No doubting his true abilities if fully fit. Putting him in the team without Brannagan & MM in there could bring out the best in him.
Maybe? I would love to see our Sheehan (Cam) further forward making things happen rather than picking the ball up from Moore at the back half the time.

Can't speak for anyone else but the reasons I have been particularly focused on McGuane...

When we're out of possession his main job is to stay tight on opposing players in and around the D. To limit options for the opposition, break up play and allow the defence to focus on their jobs and stick to their shape. If done consistently he'd also start nicking the ball to spring counter attacks. He doesn't do this. In recent weeks he's not even pretended to. He wanders around at a canter while team mates chase the ball and become progressively stretched. We can argue about whether this is the right role for him but it's the role he's been given and fundamental to making a 433 work. He's capable of doing it adequately but isn't.

In possession his job is to ' be an option' for the back four or a distraction to open space for others. That requires constant movement and adjustment and a bit of bite and physicality. When receiving the ball he should be head up, assessing and either playing simple forward passes, running at the oppo or sending it back to rebuild if there's nothing on. He doesn't do this. He just keeps wandering then knocking it backwards, every single time backwards. In recent weeks he's almost been inviting opponents to press him out of the game. We can all swoon when he manages to take a high risk ball under huge pressure and wriggle his way out of trouble (he's a very skillful player) but more often than not he's only having to do this because he's in the wrong place at the wrong time. Unacceptable.

The whole midfield is ill disciplined and underperforming (even cam) versus the first half of the season so it's not all about McGuane alone but he is, I think, the biggest offender and has the single biggest impact on our lousy performances.
It's like you've reached inside my brain and pulled this out onto the forums. Couldn't agree more. And feel slightly violated.

Reason to stick with Des should be treated like staying with a new partner that your parents approve of, deep down you know he's a nice guy but after a few dates and him staying over, you realise he's a bit boring, drinks a pint of coke in the pub and unimaginative in the bed room even though you plenty of toys in the bottom drawer, how do you tell your parents you fancy someone with experience and drinks lager top!

Not sure if already mentioned but I also note that Notts county have had a similar plight to us since losing thier manager.

They are now in 17th after being top after 12 games.

Their forum makes similar reading to this one.

Both clubs have made huge mistakes with their hires
