Manager/Coach Des Buckingham

Your annual reminder that...

Burton, MK Dons, Colchester, Southend, Scunthorpe, Tranmere, Stockport, Walsall, Gillingham, Wimbledon, Rotherham, Wigan, Doncaster, Peterborough, Yeovil, Bournemouth, Brentford, MK Dons, Plymouth, Grimsby, Luton, Swansea, Port Vale, Reading, Swindon, Blackpool, Crewe and Wycombe

...have all played in the 2nd tier since we last did (some have gone on to the top flight, too).

The largest of those clubs are comparable in size to us. Most are significantly smaller, some are absolute minnows. I don't think there is a bigger club than us that has gone as long without playing in the 2nd tier (Bristol Rovers - comparable size - have gone longer, so they're just about the only club I can think of with a more deserving claim).

Therein lies your frustration at the lack of promotion - it's been too long. This is coupled with the fact that we've now got the financial backing to mean we don't have to do what many of the above did - far exceed budget and expectation.

It's a level of modest achievement that's simply overdue. Hopefully it's coming soon.

And ideally before we have to add bloody Stevenage to the above list.

But how many of those clubs played Histon in 2008? What you didn’t realise when we got relegated to the conference all the way back in 2006 was that not only were we going into non league that we also were never allowed to play above the third tier of English football again.

Interesting wow.. This seriously hits home.

Ok you boys win, I’m raising my expectation level 👍

Back to Buckingham, he's averaging 1.25 points a game, whereas Manning averaged 2.13.

Over a 46 game season Mannings average gives 97.98pts
Buckinghamshire would give 57.5pts

So far our points have been
Manning 32 from 15
Short 3 from 1
Buckingham 20 from 16

So 55 points with 14 games to go, which at the current Des average would give us another 17.5 say 17, for a total of 72

Enough?

I really don't know, but I think we need a few more than that

No, it's not enough, it's poor. You can argue mitigations all day, but in a results business, it's poor.

I think we’ll need at least 78 so 23

It's not good reading but it also takes any context completely out of the equation. Manning had the tail end of last season with the players, a full pre season, his own staff, and much better luck with fixtures and injuries. There's absolutely no way we were going to carry on that form and plenty were saying this at the time

That's not to make excuses either but merely adding some context. For a fair chunk of time we've had around 30% of the squad injured under Buckingham, including any pace whatsoever, and he's been stitched up with his staff.

That said there will always be some injuries and the only players I can think of off the top of my head that we're missing now are Browne, Edwards and Stevens so there are no excuses to not have an upturn in performances and results. I'd be very surprised if we get 17 points or fewer from the final 14 games, I think we'll be closer to the mid 20's.

It’s interesting on what factors folk are basing their expectations on.
Has anyone asked how we are managing to pay the wages/transfer fees we are?…does anyone have any info on all of our revenue streams?
This is an honest few questions from me, because it seems unlikely that 9k crowds and a few local shirt sales are cutting it.

Matchday activations are more than covering any shortfall.

Thankfully, Bangkok Glass are having their best year ever in the region, thus ensuring they can continue to sponsor the training ground, first team shirts and whatever else is deemed a sound investment by a company that doesn’t operate in the United Kingdom.

Very good L1:
Brannagan
Leigh
Brown
Edwards

Good L1:
Cumming
Stevens
Bennett
McGuane
Harris
Goodwin
Moore
Negru
Goodrham
Browne
Matete
Bodin
Burey
Dale
Ruben

Squad L1 level:
Eastwood, Woltman, Henry, McEacrhan, Smyth

Obviously these are just my opinion, but overall our squad is of a good standard, particularly for the quality (or lack of) in the division this season. If another club got promoted with this squad I don't think any of us would be surprised - it's a squad that can definitely go up.

*Players in bold are currently unavailable (may have forgotten some, hard to keep up lol).

Maybe you are. That's what a forum is for I guess, debating these things. Different people have different opinions to each other. I'll use a few of your points, and then find a differing opinion from someone else, just to demonstrate this idea to you.

Here, you're raving about Henry and Gatlin. I respect that, it's your opinion. However, @MustardYellow disagrees with you:

Maybe not key members of the squad, but Cumming certainly is. Again, you think he's a good player here

But @MustardYellow clearly disagrees:

Of course you don't think our strikers are good. You've said a few times you don't rate Harris, and surely can't think Goodwin is the Messiah after half an hour?

But the point im trying to make is that this is a forum, people will disagree. No need to take it so personally.

P.S. I know this has hurt your ego, so before you come back with a jibe about being "obsessed" with you:
A) The search function is easy to use (despite having to sift through loads of waffle from you)
B) I wrote the entirety of this post whilst waiting for the bus. I didnt have better things to do

And yes, I can clearly see you have nothing better to do.

With all due respect you posted on 29th Jan that you were happy with Cumming has he is experienced at this level, you then posted on the same day that he hasn’t impressed you at all.

That’s not opinions evolving.

I said he was young but experienced, that's not the same thing.
