Manager/Coach Des Buckingham

Whoever our new manager was there was going to be huge expectation given our league position and start to the season. I get the feeling with local lad Des the expectaction and the bar are set even slightly higher than they may have been for someone else.

I hope this doesn’t put any extra pressure on him and particularly the players. There is a huge amount of goodwill around the club just now, it might be we need to be patient with results and performances for a few games until the players get used to any tweaks and adjustments to systems etc… Having said that we should be beating Cheltenham on Sat, but Bolton is going to be a very tough first home match for Des.

Games left in 2023;

Cheltenham a
Bolton h
Grimsby FAC
Peterborough a
Reading a
Burton h
Northampton a
Cambridge h
Derby h

I would have expected 5 wins and a couple of draws at least, plus progression to the FAC 3rd round under Manning, and there's absolutely no reason to change this view with Des in charge.

Having players coming back from injury, money to spend in January, and a recruitment team that got most things right in the summer, means that we should all be getting on the positive bus!

Posh on the road is tough; Bolton may well be the best team in the division (other than us).

Otherwise, I'm not sure you could ask for a more gentle start to a managerial reign than that..........

I think Portsmouth might feature in there somewhere. If so it gets some tough games out the way

With Portsmouth unbeaten in the league they are due a bad run. Hopefully we can take advantage of any shortcomings there

Yeah, as Scotchers says - there's no time to reschedule the Pompey game this year.

That list doesn't include the second round of the Tinpot Trophy, which will take up one of the two remaining midweek slots in December (and the last remaining one needs to be saved in case we b****r up against Grimsby and have a cup replay).

Pompey game will be mid-January at the earliest. Personally, I think we should rearrange it for Tuesday February 27th and play a good old-fashioned home-and-away against them!

Not convinced by portsmouth even though they are unbeaten. Don't believe they have completely dominated many (if any) teams and seem to scrap through with quite a number of injury time winners. You could argue that good teams find a way to win but I imagine their luck may run out before long. Bolton and Oxford for the top 2 spots for me. Playoffs for Pompey

We have a good squad that is capable of beating anyone if they stay disciplined and to the game plan, they have shown that.
I expect Des to do things similar to Manning without the mono tone, coaching manual speaches.

He will no doubt set up in a 433 formation with a similar starting 11 as Manning did. 1 player though that I do think will benefit from the change in management is Gorrin. Des knows him and has worked with him before.

In business you should always look to get the best deal. I’m surprised we didn’t even make an attempt to lowering the compensation amount

Massive match on Saturday. I would say that DB coming into a team that are second in the league comes with more pressure than when Manning was appointed last season.

I'm not sure that is the case. We've lost 1 in the last 11 and won the 2 games since Manning left. I'm not sure there has ever been a better time to take over against a very poor Cheltenham side.

That's a million times better than coming in to a relegation battle with 10 games left to save our season.

He doesn't need to do a rebuilding job, should hit the ground running.

Any rumours on backroom staff?

Hopefully, he will already know how limited a player he is. Not forgetting that he’s an absolute liability when it comes to yellow cards.

Lovely bloke, but not at the level we need.

I’m hoping Des won’t have any room for sentiment in the teams and bench he selects. I can’t see Gorrin being good enough any more after all his injury problems unless we are down to the bare bones. I hope we’ll also sign another right back, we need someone of similar calibre to Greg Leigh to be our main starter there.

I‘m sure Des will do the right thing and base selection on merit and not because he knows them from previous roles.

If money was no object I would love a right back as you say, a striker and cover for Branagan.
