FA Cup AFCBournmouth v Borehamwood SHOCK!

Whilst undoubtedly a shock, Boreham Wood have some pretty hefty money behind them. They’ve come close to getting into the League a few times over the last few seasons on paltry attendances too. Win their games in hand and they’ll go top of the NL.

This is not a Hereford v Newcastle or Sutton v Coventry style upset of old. It’s similar to when Crawley went on their cup run a decade ago. Those in the know knew it wasn’t quite the seismic shock the media will play it to be.
Championship side loses to National League side.
I’d say that’s an upset, what have their attendances or how much money they may have behind them got to do with that?
Absolutely nothing.
I can tell you that their players don’t give a toss about that this morning, a giant killing for the club to dine out on for some time.

Not sure about that, apparently their owner took a 2nd mortgage out to get Boreham Wood through the lockdowns

I did say it was a shock. My point was that in terms of the history of FA Cup giant killings, it's not the biggest upset ever and when you dig a bit deeper realise that Boreham Wood are a well funded and well run side at present. My criticism was more aimed at the media for spinning the colossal upset storyline when the reality was that the non-leaguers always had a chance even against a strong Championship side like Bournemouth.
The owner has invested in significant training/sports facilities for hiring out and coaching programmes* which have raised considerable funds each season (bar lockdowns). They also get a decent sum from Arsenal Ladies as they use their stadium (the new end stand is called the North Bank). I don't think they are bankrolled any more, probably less, than many, and definitely less than teams such as Wrexham (they've spent over £1m on transfer fees alone if reports are accurate), Stockport and Chesterfield (who spent around £250m for Tshimanga from Boreham Wood).

Whether they are profitable I don't know but the owner has built long term income streams for the club and they aren't a R&D as far as I can see.

*When lower down the pyramid, players would also be coaches in these programmes enabling the players to be a sort of full time.

He has indeed and he's more than welcome to. However, how many times have we seen this occur? Be it an individual or a consortium, we've seen many of these grand idea schemes to fire a sleepy non-league side into the big time. More fail than succeed when either the ceiling is reached or the owner gets bored. For every Salford United, there is a Billericay. The latest pet project is bitcoin investor Peter McCormack at Real Bedford who again has grand ideas for his side to get to the FL. We'll see how that goes. I'm not against these people trying - I just fear for the clubs when the gamble doesn't pay off or the owner decides to leave.

The chairman himself bemoaned the lack of fans at matches but what does he expect? Abingdon has more residents than Borehamwood does and unless he can persuade the cast of EastEnders and the audience from a screening of 'Pointless' away from Elstree Studios down to the ground from time to time, that's as big as they're going to get.

Seems to me there is some pretty unfair stuff being written about Boreham Wood - the Chairman has been at this since 1999, building an infrastructure and as Marked Ox says, generating revenue streams from Arsenal, 3rd party rental of the pitches and training facilities and building up a self-financing academy and sports college. He seems to have put money in but not at the level we've seen at Fleetwood and Forest Green and he has actually created something (see the article below) without having one of the biggest playing budgets. Getting into the league is obviously an aim, it's not the be-all and end-all and it won't break them if they don't. Good article here:

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/feb/05/boreham-wood-fa-cup-bournemouth-academy

@unification you say 'Those in the know...' - what do you know that we don't about Boreham Wood and their funding (other than the above)? So, all of that in the article is fluff and lies?

As for why the fan numbers remain low, that's a different matter.

TBF they'll probably get a few more than usual for the next few weeks at least

Should Karl ever leave us (and I really don't think he will or want him to) Luke Garrard would be exactly the manager I'd want to replace him. Loyal, aware of the community and academy aspect, plays good football, and a real winner.

I've been aware of him for a while now and always been impressed by him, apart from his short stint with the inbreds many years ago!

I’d rather just acknowledge the win for what it was rather than also having a dig at the way the clubs run, it’s as patronising as the comments about the number of ‘day trippers’ they took to Bournemouth.
Who cares, it was their biggest day out in some time and now they have Everton away they’ll probably take even more, with a bit of luck I’ll be one of them!

I'm sure Karl will leave at some point if he gets an offer from Luton , MK, or someone else localish. No one can stay for ever. I agree that we should then look to the Conference, or maybe give Mous a chance.

I heard he was waiting for a dream job at Blackpool to come up, I read that somewhere a few days back...

I was sat next to a guy from the PFA on Saturday, and he is Mous's assessor for his Pro Licence that the PFA are putting him through. Had a really interesting chat with him and he confirmed two things. Firstly that, yes Mous does see himself eventually going into management, something this guy thought he'd be very good at. He also confirmed that for the role of PFA Chairman Mous needs to have a professional contract, but does not need to play a single game, nor even be a member of the registered playing squad.

Edit: He also confirmed that the Cowley brothers are on the same course as Mous, so he might have to sit between them the next time they all meet!

Colin, that seems to confirm what we suspected. Once Long is fit, I hope we won't be seeing Mous on the bench. With the squad we have assembled, it would a waste of a space to have a player who makes 5 minute cameos to shore up the defence.

It was some shock against a club with premiership ambitions.
I only wish Kidderminster had pulled it off against West Ham.
All these one off games can produce shocks.
Mostly because so called bigger clubs give the competition some disrespect and field young unproved players

.... as Mous came on for the last few mins on Saturday ( for Sykes), assume he is registered as part of the squad for the remainder of the season?

cheers for the insight/ info @Colin B

I like seeing him come on at the end; it says to me that we're really determined to hold on to our lead or point and are going to do so.

But sometimes a cameo if 5 mins is all we need to shore up the defence

I see that Bazzer but you need to balance that up against a place taken on the bench by somebody who gives us a greater width of options.

But tbf @Big Ron he’s our only back up CB and if we need to shore up the defence then he’s the man for the job but that would still leave 5 other outfield players so he’s not really taking up a space on the bench, you need cover for all aresjust in case.

Brown and/or Long + Forde should cover it (assuming no more injuries).
