Ex-Player Thread Yunus Konak

Class player, think we are going to have to brave and keep him on for 90 as we don’t have the quality to cover him. Zero chance he plays for us next season, he is going to play at a higher level than the championship, but nice to see a player start out here.

My only gripe is he keeps on getting subbed. Whenever it happens we sit 10 yards deeper.

I've long been a defender of Will Vaulks (for the record) but his introduction today once again resulted in a reduction in tempo, a reduction of snap in the tackle, and a predictiveness in our play that belied the previous 75 minutes.

Vaulks is ok in a three, in very specific circumstances. That's it at this point. None of which applied today.

I don't know why he was preferred to McDonnell. I don't really know why a fresh Vaulks is even preferred to a knackered Konak (if that's even the case) either, to be honest.

Those three subs (Vaulks, Harris, Jin Woo) all did 'ok' individually - but each represented a significant drop off from their predecessor and so, collectively, momentum was lost.

Vaulks for Konak truly was the epitome of that.

His long throw, that’s it.

I’ve been disappointed with Vaulks recently but his throw was insane in that wind yesterday, we didn’t really make the most of the second one, it seemed to surprise everyone - if we’d had 2-3 more then it could have been a real weapon but it wasn’t to be. But on a normal day I’d rather see McDonnell come on for sure

I thought that.

The Vaulks long throw is streets ahead of most.

Edit: not to derail the Yunus Konak thread, he's a cracking player. We'd be higher in the table had he been here all season, I think.

Oh certainly, our becoming good coincides with him coming into the team and freeing up Cam.

We don’t have the cover for the first team but if we had this team that’s playing now all season we would have been safe by now we would have another 11/12 points. Apparently Rowett wasn’t interested in Konak and we could have had him all season.

Can think of a couple of recent examples of players who had a good loan spell after moving in January, then agreed a season-long loan with the same club over the summer.

Beadle at Wednesday (2024). Gelhardt at Hull (2025).

One common thread is that both initially made major contributions in their team's fight for survival.

Probably dreaming, but that's the story I'd like to hear again please.

I don't know about that, loan placements for PL clubs can sometimes be a lottery, so finding a fit in the Championship that works for both player and the parent club is invaluable. Plus he'd be doing a lot more defending next season in the Championship for us vs if he was with a team higher up

A 19 year old who is shining in a struggling championship team in his first loan out, who is coming from one of the best run clubs in the country and who is very highly thought of youth prospect around Europe probably has a lot of options beyond just the championship for his second loan though, if we stay up we won’t just be competing with a few Championship clubs for his loan signing, he has already moved from Turkey so I doubt he would shy away from top level football elsewhere in Europe. Would love him to be here next season, can’t see it, but hope I am wrong.

Quality player. Just occasionally he gets caught in possession rather than moving it a bit quicker. Certainly bringing out the best in Brannagan.

Same with Brannagan but sometimes I wonder if that’s our lack of movement around and in front of them. Something we can improve on for me. Saying that Brown offered himself as an option a few times yesterday which helped us get up the pitch, I think all of our players are going to have to braver in doing so for the rest of the season, especially Monday.

It feels like he adds a new string to his bow every game at the moment. He always seems to get a foot to the ball and it always seems to move it on to another Oxford player. But he was starting to get more confident and creative today.

Getting better every week, i hope we can stay up and keep him for another year ,excellent effort but so did everyone
