Ex-Player Thread Yunus Konak

Excellent player. Aerially he wins most balls, on the ground, he makes it look easy when he puts a foot in, wins the ball and (generally) distributes forwards or sideways.

He looks like a Brentford type player. Of the young players we have that have aspirations of the PL, I think he may be the one with the most chance. That’s not to dismiss the others.

Would love to get him for a season long loan next year.

I was a Rowett fan, but if we turned him down in the summer, he needs his head wobbled.

I do wonder just how much of the summer business grinding to a halt was as a result of Rowett effectively vetoing players Ed and co wanted to bring in, basically saying 'you can sign them, but I won't play them'. Felt like there was some friction when Rowett wanted to bring in Allan Campbell but Ed wouldn't sign it off

I was worried last season when we signed Bradshaw and we're heavily linked with Longman that we'd go down that route. Bang average but hard working and often worked with Rowett before would have been a terrible way to go and really short term thinking with a very low ceiling on how good we can ever be. Turning down Konak and wanting to move Mills out are more examples of a reluctance to trust younger players and stick with what he knew.

As an aside if he's still here next season I'd expect Goodrham to be back at it. Seems to have been written off by some despite being excellent in League One and then having a good start in the Championship. Form went off a cliff when he was in and out the team, played out wide in a position that anyone could see didn't suit him and in a team that sat so deep he was miles away from their goal and chucking the ball over his head. Immediately after Rowett got sacked he moves into his best position and wins us the game against a very good Southampton team. Very talented and much better than he was allowed to show for a year or so.

If what has been rumoured about Rowett turning him down in the summer is true, then he’s relegated us with that decision alone

I don't know this for a fact, but it wouldn't surprise me at all.

The difficulty in getting players in during the summer was far from the one-sided position that Rowett would allude to in interviews. He blocked a number of moves whilst also "sulking" about some of those that were brought in.

Not excusing anyone, but when you're at the lower end of the financial table and expectations you need everyone on the same page and pulling in the same direction.

I don't want to distract from the Konak thread (who has been excellent) but I stand by previous statements that we're better without Rowett at the club.

Top player and excellent yesterday. I still maintain there’s a very slight indecisiveness with him when he’s got that extra second or two with the ball to think, a couple of times yesterday he had the ball around the edge of the box and couldn’t quite see the pass or decide to shoot and ended up being a bit of nothing. Brilliant at winning the ball - has a very distinctive tackling style - and one touch stuff though.

January’s window was the first since the summer of 2023 under Manning when the recruitment team have been able to mainly bring in the players they want without a manger wanting to take fewer risks, or what they perceived as risks. It wasn’t perfect, but I expect a decent summer again now we’re back to the blueprint that made us successful in the first place, so long as Bloomfield doesn’t decide he wants loads of 30+ cloggers that no other Championship teams want

Yunus the next to go. Makosso I imagine the only one we’d consider keeping around permanently, and I assume this is building to the retained list

They've all gone mate.

Confirmed on the official site* first thing this morning.

I still cannot get my head around the way we handled Ben Davies.

Shocking doesn't even begin to cover it.
More concerned about the way we handled Greg Leigh. A contracted player who we know is capable at L1 level, bombed out of the squad in place of a loanee who's barely featured for OUFC. I'd have rather have kept Leigh sweet, particularly as some of our contract extensions have looked like preparation for League 1 anyway.

His first headless-chicken appearance was a bit worrying, but he settled to the level and was a really good, important player for us in the run-in I think. Certainly had the energy we were crying out for in the first half of the season.

I wonder if bford would re loan him to us?
He hasn't done much pre us and is highly rated by them
Hell get valuable playing time
And if bford make Europe they don't need the money

Strange comment.
How did wd handle him? How much was he injured?

Never brought into the team when Helik and/or Brown were performing poorly and often not in the squad when he wasn’t even injured.

We craved a centre back who was decent on the ball yet we never made full use of him or Makosso.

Sounded to me as if he was often injured or not well enough to take a risk on.
Do you know how many games he was available for and fit enough to play?

Good luck to Konak, the boys got a very bright future ahead of him.

Not sure if it has been disclosed, but does anyone know the extent of the injury he suffered at Millwall at the weekend, didn't look good when he limped off.

Onto Konak, what a player.
Loved watching him play. He is very young and his distribution should improve- I would be surprised if he doesn't play a lot in the PL.
Good luck to him. We were so much a better side with him playing ( and Brannagan looked a different player)

Its seems to be standard procedure at this time of year that all loans return to their parent clubs until the transfer window opens and clubs sort out who will be in their squads the following season and who will be released, transfer listed, loaned out.
I do think it unlikely Konak, Donley, or Lankshear will be with us next season as the players and their clubs will see it as a backward step. b*gger relegation.
One positive though is that they will return to Brentford and Spurs with good reports of our club and how well they were handled. May help with next seasons loans.

Should think that they will report on a positive experience overall and help keep laying foundations for future loans and or sales.

Not our problem anymore.

f**k me! We had a young player who gave everything for our club to try to keep us up, and then picked up an injury in his last game when he could have easily disappeared back to Brentford.

And you respond like that?!

Personally, I hope that the injury is only minor and he gets the time to fully recover before pre-season starts, regardless of whether he is our player or not.
