Well summed up. As you say, not the most endearing perhaps but what a player. He’d still make it into my best Kassam era XI at left back. Ruffels was more likeable and local but not on the same level as Johnson ability wise, nor is Currie in my opinion.

Johnson is still a free agent, knocking about in those pre-season trials games they arrange for players looking for a club

Sorry for re-surfacing something from way back, but was looking at this thread whilst listening to the game at Huddersfield.

Would this game against Forest in Oct '78 be the 'best' team we're ever played against?

Whilst we were in Div 1 we obviously played double winning Liverpool, league winning Everton and a team rated arguably Liverpool's best ever (Aldridge, Barnes, Beardsley, Houghton) between 1985 - 88..... but the Forest team in 78 were reigning League Cup winners and League Champions. They won the league cup again during the season in which this game was played, came runners-up in Div 1 and won the first of back-to-back European Cups at the end of that season. Some team and manager!

Ha! Kids today! We used to walk a lot more back then. Hundreds would walk from Barton, Risinghurst, Quarry, Wood Farm etc...or get the bus.

September 13th 1985

Oxford beat West Brom to the signature of Fulham midfielder Ray Houghton, 23. The U’s pay the Cottagers £147,000 for Houghton who almost joined Jim Smith at QPR earlier that summer. Houghton was sold to Liverpool for £825,000 in September 1987. The Wokingham based diminutive midfielder made his debut for Oxford 24 hours later as the U’s drew 2-2 with Liverpool at the Manor.

He was a star player.
