Memory Lane Yesteryear

Midlands starts just north of Newbury, has done for years. Putting Oxfordshire in the south is just lazy.

If you split England into thirds by land area in a south, midlands, north way Oxfordshire is in the south, saw a map the other day that did that so it’s just a fact really.
A lot of what we call the north was actually in the midlands doing that though, so a true geographic split and what people mean by the terms are askew.

Thing is, we're 'Thames Valley' (though not Royals) which ties us to the south east, even though we have a more western or Midlands feel.

I think people start to sound a bit 'Midland' around Banbury or just past it?
Not far off. The trap-bath split runs more or less on a line from the Wash to south Wales, I think. I live right on the southern border of Leicestershire (like 50 yards away) and most of the locals have a more northern pronunciation of bath, laugh, cup, etc. A few miles further south, it changes. My kids, fortunately, have grown up not sounding like they're from Leicester!

Being in the twilight zone between the south-midlands and the south-east growing up in Didcot was useful, as we got to watch both Star Soccer then The Big Match on a Sunday afternoon.

I was always very irritated thaf we never (I could be wrong) got covered on Star Soccer. It always seemed to be Wolves or Coventry etc
I seem to dimly remember us featuring on Star Soccer in a game away at Shrewsbury Town when we were in the 3rd division. The excitement!

Renowned actor Tom Georgeson - who appeared in The Manageress which was partly filmed at the Manor Ground during 1989-90 - sadly passed away this week aged 88.

The best thing Clotet ever did, what a great little player he was.

Ricardinho was the tenth signing by Clotet that summer.

A summer that included the signings of James Henry, Alex Mowatt, Mike Williamson, Gino van Kessel , Xemi Fernandez , Jonathan Obika , Agon Mehmeti, Ivo Pekalski and Jack Payne.

That summer was a bit of a mess. There seems to be quite the split between players that were signed for MApp and the others for Clotet
