Memory Lane Yesteryear

Yeah Baldock was the only one I could think of who even comes close. Billy Hamilton, for those who weren't around at the time, scored 20 goals in his 41 appearances. His partnership and understanding with John Aldridge absolutely tore the division we are currently playing in to absolute shreds. He had scored 17 goals in 26 games before getting injured warming up before an FA Cup game at The Manor. It wasn't just his goals output though, he was the perfect foil for Aldridge, who was also scoring at a tremendous rate.

Unfortunately, despite a few false dawns, he never managed to recover from that injury properly.
I cannot think of a more perfect team. Those perfectly weighted crosses from Brock, Rosie and Langan, big Billy Hamilton rising high - he seemed to just hang in the air waiting for the ball, either to knock down to Aldridge - or glance into the net. And then Aldridge, the perfect poacher striker. Between the two of them, they scared defences rigid. God I miss those days. The Leeds Game was a perfect example.

And Billy was a fantastic footballer not just a big bustling striker. The ball he put through for Aldo to run onto in that Leeds game was sublime, absolute class!!

I keep forgetting Pat Hoban was part of that season's squad. With Hylton, Maguire, Taylor, Roofe, Waring, Bowery, and Roberts all featuring up top, somehow he gets pushed to the back of my memory. Turns out he played 33 times that season (though mostly as a sub) despite being shipped out on loan for the 2nd half of the season!

Remember Trevor Carson being a decent lower league keeper.

I remember a debate a few years ago trying to figure out which opposition player had scored most goals in total against Us. I don't think anyone knew how to find out definitively but Kerry Dixon's name came up as a strong possibility...

@Boris next Rage Online database update. You've already set it to search for OUR goal scorers. Should only take an hour or two to list those who scored against us, right? 😉

There have been a fair few names that seemed to score against us every time we played them, though I suspect the accuracy of the names that come to mind might be slightly skewered due to Champ/Football Manager campaigns...

Ricky Otto always seemed to score against us as well.

Early name to consider with that would be Eric Nixon.

He was definitely at the Manor a lot in the 90s.

I was wondering if some player declined through the leagues with us in the 2000's though, could be someone you barely noticed.

Can't find any stats for Ricky. This site lists 7 Chelsea goals for Dixon against Us, but doesn't include the FMC hattrick mentioned above. So that's ten at least for Chelsea alone, and I'm sure he got a few for Reading too.

By contrast Paddy Madden, who 'always' seemed to score against Us, apparently got 5.

Any other ideas? You'd have thought the internet would have evolved to have a definitive database of things like this by now!

Steve Cherry as well. Remember he used to react well to the abuse banter from the London Road whilst giving some back (ie. patting his backside at the London Road to "You fat bastard"). Whereas Nixon used to really react so the LR doubled down.

Tommy Tynan? Although I think you already have the winner with Dixon.

I’m sure there was a player who ended up at Exeter and I think played for reading who always seemed to score against us, he was quite prolific in the 90s, 2000s.

Going back to the late 70’s/early 80’s Steve Phillips scored a hatful of goals against us for Brentford.

In the last four or five seasons Callum Lang has regularly scored against us for Wigan and Portsmouth.
