The worst team we have ever had imo was the team that David Kemp 'managed'- relegated from the third tier (whatever it was called then) and conceded 100+ League goals. I honestly think that team would have been relegated from the Conference, it was that bad. Definitely the worst bunch of players I have ever seen for us!

I couldn't mount a serious argument against that.

The U’s are in top flight action on this day 38 years ago and draw an away league match 0-0 against Charlton Athletic at Selhurst Park.
The Valiants played home games at Selhurst Park from 1985-1991. The national press reported the gate at 5,000 which was later revised down to 4,205 - the lowest ever attendance for a then First Division match - later to be beaten several times by Wimbledon where in January 1993 just 3,039 attended a home match with Everton.

Goes to show how popular football is now. I remember so many games back then played in front of small crowds. Look at the Shrewsbury V Crystal Palace attendance of 2555, which is now today's Championship. Southampton at home to Luton, crowd 12117, in what is now the Premier league. Also, for Southampton, Lawrence scored 2 goals. Is that George Lawrence ? :)

I was there but got lost on the way and arrived at half time, so officially the attendance should be reduced by a half.

Some interesting posts on here about historic crowds and attendances and our "right" place in the football league. Also this blog about "big clubs". https://oxblogger.substack.com/p/extensive-musings-on-the-big-club

Looking back on the 1980s, clubs with much smaller crowds could outperform and hold their own for a few years in the top flight.

I'd like to see us as an established mid-table Championship club, the famous "top 30" ambition. But looking at all of the other clubs also looking to be in that position, we are currently looking more like relegaton threatened.

When you then look at the teams who will be in League 1 next season, if we are relegated it's probably just as well that Birmingham City and Wrexham come up this year.

Remember it well. Two lads in the side that I knew well and played with and against.
Also Plymouth's goalscorers with OUFC connections, Jon Sims and the one and only David Kemp!!
