Ex-Player Thread Will Vaulks

Does anyone know if we got a fee? I asked once before and got a hilarious non-answer 🙄
 
Considering the rumours that his wages were very high, it seems pretty surprising that he would willingly give that up, as I can't imagine. Tranmere are paying more than a fraction of the money he was rumoured to be on here

I get it's closer to home for him. And a 2-year deal but still seems pretty surprising
 
He was actually the signing I was most excited about during that first transfer window, which is pretty weird to say of a 30-year-old defensive midfielder, but on paper he seemed exactly what we needed moving up a level, I don't think he ever really had a consistently decent spell for us in all honesty though, and at times was a liability, but as has been said many times, he seemed like an absolutely top bloke and I hope he has a good end to his career

The Dub suggested upon relegation Vaulks had the option to leave for free (alongside a wage reduction).

Considering he joined us because we offered him a 3yr deal (I assume on generous wages), I don't think there was anything the club could do, especially with his minutes looking limited. Equally, a 2yr deal at Tranmere, back close to home. Suits all sides I think.
 
All the best, Will. Someone who won’t get credit for all the good stuff he did. Too many people will only rate him based on his on the pitch performances, but Wills work at the club goes far beyond that. Far more important than that. He’s had a bigger impact than many so called names have.
Yes, we won’t be wasting our time with pointless long throws.. but we’ve lost a major mental health ambassador.
Guys.. don’t be scared to talk or reach out. Will may be gone but his legacy lives on.
I’m here if anyone needs to be chat to a stranger.
I’m sure others are too.

Now that he's gone, I can finally reveal the truth behind the real Will Vaulks.

I had a brief chat with him in the car park of the big Tesco in Bicester a few weeks ago, and he didn't put his trolley back in one of the trolley parks. Just left it in the walk way.

Never meet your heroes, guys.

But seriously, he's clearly a highly driven and inspirational chap off the pitch, and his work in the community is something that has made me immensely proud to have him at my club. I hope some of the younger lads have been taking notes over the last couple of years.

Wish him all the best at Tranmere, he started poorly with that error at Coventry and another soon after, but he did improve.

His 2 goal celebrations were fun, the long throw ended up being over used and became ineffective.

His mental health work to help others from his own sad experiences was excellent

If he was really on the kind of money mentioned, others must have been on more, and that is why we are in the mess we are in with the embargo , too many in league 1 on championship wages, not his fault, but the club's.

Decent bloke who i am sure will go on to be a decent manager/ head coach

His work of the pitch was more inspirational than his work on it

I think we are allowed to look at him as a footballer? That is what he was primarily here for?
 
Can only wish him all the best. Looks a good move for him. Maybe will kick start a managerial move at Tranmere
 
It’s weird, I don’t see anything in Vaulks that screams manager in waiting. Some players you have that feeling and others you don’t. In fairness, I wouldn’t have had Ramsey down as management material either! Just a gut feeling!

On his throw ins I really enjoyed watching him trot from side to side and launch them in, caused real havoc on a lot of occasions. A long, loopy, paceless throw is a waste of time but Vaulks could fizz them in with pace and distance and right in the mix. We still have Currie and Brown to take them but nothing like as effective as Vaulks who was one of the best around.

I’m never that bothered when a player leaves Oxford, I lose interest in him pretty quickly but I wish Vaulks well - a decent player who I always liked but mercilessly criticised by large swathes of our fan base and across this forum.

Not a huge surprise to see him go. I think that’s a good signing for a league 2 club, good enough for League 1 in my opinion but probably a good move location wise if he wants to be back up north.

He had a bit of a mixed time with us, started off with a few errors (Cov and Sunderland spring to mind) but was instrumental in that run after Rowett came in that ultimately kept us up. Partly due to his long throws but he also put in some solid displays as we secured enough points to stay up.

His impact off the pitch was very impressive, really championing the mental health cause. Overall I’ll look back on him as a great bloke who always gave it everything he had. Sometimes that wasn’t quite enough, but you’d probably say that for a lot of our players last season.
 
Perhaps one of those "championship ready" players we bought in who didn't really live up to the hype, but think he played a big part in steadying the ship when Rowett came in to help keep us up.

Feel privileged to have had him here leading the Can We Talk stuff - really important work that he was brilliant with.

Good move overall, especially if it does save a big chunk of wages - good luck Will!
 
I'm not sure whether the quick throw in rules from the World Cup are being brought in this season in the EFL, but it does seem to be an end to me to tactics like the long throw in, as teams won't have the time to organise and get players ready in the box.

It might have helped us back in the day, quick long throw into the box before the defense has had time to organise, targeting one of the big Billys...

In fact, thinking about it, I'd change the rules on free-kicks so the attacking team can take them whenever they want to. Still organising a wall and keeper out of position? Tough luck.
 
It's funny a lot of people saying manager in wating. If he does it at Tranmere it won't be the first time for one of our former players.
