What Have You Been Reading Lately? 📖

I have just finished reading the novel 'Season" by George Harrison ( not that one)
2 Norwich ST holders who go to games on their own and sit next to each other, forming a kind of friendship whilst dealing with loneliness, and personal issues.
A decent read ( and based on a whole season of a relegation threatened team).

Thanks for recommending Season, which I spotted in the library. Lots of recognisable details about football fans and the way the season unfolds, with a backdrop of melancholy. (Quite a lot of perceptive descriptions of discussions on fan sites too). I think most readers on here would enjoy it.

I read Small Worlds by Caleb Azumah Nelson recently which was very good. 2023 so relatively new and it mentions lots of songs so a good playlist for the book too!

One of the best things I’ve read in recent years is Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. It’s narrated by a girl robot, which makes it sound awful (and sci fi) but it’s incredibly original and moving.

You'll have to go back 20+ years but I'd recommend the Charlie Parker series by John Connolly. Something like 20+ books in the series.

'Every Dead Thing' is the first book and an excellent start. I would recommend the books in order though as the characters build and change throughout so some of it wouldn't make sense otherwise.

Glorious Exploits by Ferdia Lennon was read by a few folk on here in the last year and is superb. Came out a couple of years ago and a modern classic.

Ishiguro's a coconut (his first 2 books before the decided he was Conrad were good). Oe is worth reading if you have a Japanese bent, spare the rod or whatever.

I know this is a book thread, but if you've not watched the film by the way - do so. Not only is it very enjoyable, but from a filmmaking perspective they've done so much with very limited use of CGI, preferring to work with practical props instead and even take apart cameras to remove the infrared filters to capture some fascinating footage.

Back to books - I'm re-reading Fight Club. I know Chuck Palahniuk once said "Be careful of any man whose favorite book/movie is Fight Club, The Catcher in the Rye, or American Psycho. Because they missed the point of those books, and they are probably a psychopath", but I remember enjoying it first time around, and thought I'd see how it's aged for me 20-odd years later.

Project Hail Mary is Sci Fi! I watched the film on Saturday. Didn't really know what it was about going into it and it was superb! My only regret was that I didn't see it in the cinema. It looked nice enough on my OLED in Dolby Vision but it was one of those films that had to be experienced in the Cinema.

I too also want to get back into reading and was also thinking about Hail Mary. I might purchase the Andy Weir collection and go from there

I’ve been bashing my way through Ken follett books recently. I enjoy reading but find it hard to get into any book - I’m probably adhd or something - but for some reason have no bother with KF. They have interesting perspectives on history and generally good characters (although a bit formulaic at times).

All my life I’ve had this thing where if I can actually get through the first 30 pages of a book I’ll get to the end, but the hit rate is about 40%. Loads of books I’ve gone back to and managed to get through the barrier and then enjoyed. Some authors just make it work and I have no bother, others I have zero chance. I also find that I read every word of a book (sometimes multiple times because I have to go back again and again because I wasn’t focussing). Turns out my wife can read anything but just skims it all so when I talk about something in a book we’ve both read she has no idea what I’m on about

Really enjoyed Satsuma Complex but felt that Hotel Avocado was a little rushed and not up to the same standard.

The Long Shoe is on the table ready to go after I've finished Revolting by Terry Deary (Horrible Histories for a more grown up reader!)

The problem I have with audiobooks is I don’t listen and it’s harder to rewind than to flick back a few pages.
