General What Have You Been Listening To Lately? šŸŽµ

Rewind to the 90s (1995-2001 to be precise )when cult Oxford DIY disco/punk trio Holy Roman Empire released a number of EPs and singles as well as a number of tracks included on a variety of cool compilation albums too. Their album that never was , Illusion of Chaos has been available as a download for a few years now. Finally Illusion of Chaos is available to buy on either CD or Vinyl format via https://elasticstage.com/holyromanempire/releases/the-illusion-of-chaos-album

Tracklisting - Leftwinger,Even In My Sleep, Benazir Bhutto, My life for Yours, Atom Bombs, Shotgun, Holy Water Baby, Thick As Theives, Dantes Inferno, I Bleed Petrol, No Tomorrow

Holy Roman Empire released an Oxford United Mix of their Xmas single Holy Water Baby with all profits from that version donated to the, at the time, unpaid OUFC admin staff fund. They also played a pre match gig in The Supporters club prior to the home game V Birmingham City ( Which until more recent times, became the U's record home defeat)

Holy Roman Empire played at Oxstock festival in Cutteslowe park, +the first few Truck festivals in Steventon, they had a decent following in Oxford, Aldershot, North London and Brixton, they numbered many members of Oxford Music scene royalty in that following (they even got name checked in Radiohead' number You And Who's Army).

As someone who experience the glory that was punk from 1977 onwards I've always thought that the 1990s Oxford music scene (and the old versions of the current venues) gave that era a run for its money.

(Cue pile on from 'the kids of today' and @SteMerritt)

Too young to experience punk live, although dad did ensure plenty was played around the house at the time, but you are going to struggle to find a better time than the 90s to be a music fan in Oxford. What days.

Speaking of 90s Oxford music, here is the most awkward and annoying CD case ever produced...

"Quality But Hers" by Dustball. The amount of times this sodding thing would just decide to roll off my CD shelf 🤣. Should have bought the bloody standard version.
I love the reason for the album title (you may know this) - it was from the sign on the little butchers in Cowley Road, where the 'c' had dropped off.

Here's a question for you - what music do you detest that everyone seems to love?

Knowing this forum I reckon this will get me banned but the Clash are so over-rated and awful. The first record is alright but the rest is either really bad pub rock or cod reggae. Why listen to the Clash when you can listen to the Damned on one hand or King Tubby, Augustus Pablo or Lee Scratch Perry on the other. They make no sense. London Calling is simply bad.

The Clash put out some great singles (with equally wonderful B-sides) early in their career as well as that first LP. And for that alone, I'd dispute your 'over-rated and awful' description. But after that, it is pretty pedestrian stuff IMO. I didn't like 'Give 'Em Enough Rope' and rather gave up on them - never got 'London Calling' either.

As for bands that I detest that others love? Probably too many to mention!

I don’t really detest any band/musician, if it’s not my thing it’s easy enough to avoid it or if not it’s pretty harmless and can tune it out.

Except for f*****g Queen, can’t f*****g stand them.
I cant tune out everyone's love of the Clash. People still bang on about them all the time (or maybe just the people who I hang out with).

I reckon I can go years without someone talking to me about the clash, so it might just be your mates.

You must like white man in Hammersmith palais though? That’s a tune.
My mates also go on about how great Sweet Home Alabama is. I think I need new mates. I might hang out with @Big Ron . He’s got good taste. @Big Ron doesn’t get a choice in this.

Can only be The Killers for me. I've always hated them and their ubiquity in indie clubs when I used to frequent such places always put me in a bad mood. Lowest common denominator bullshit. And don't get me started on their f*****g lyrics...

I liked and still like The Clash but not in any obsessive way. However, I’m largely in agreement regarding ham fisted rock band attempts at reggae and The Clash have some clunkers! As for The Police……

There are a couple of pearls from that era, notably The Members 12ā€ version of ā€˜Offshore Banking Business’ and The Ruts ā€˜Jah Wars’ and in particular the prophetic ā€˜Love In Vain’, whereby Malcolm Owen foresaw his own drug induced demise. In fact their debut single ā€˜In A Rut’ was released on the People Unite label, home to one of Britain’s great reggae bands, Misty In Roots.
