General What Have You Been Listening To Lately? 🎵

I'm well into the new Doves album 'Constellations for the lonely', what a fantastic collection of songs. Doves once again proving they are the best band to come out of Manchester in the last 30 years or so. Jimi Goodwin's bass is just superb, surely the most under-rated bassist in the country.
I will never understand why Elbow are more popular than Doves.

Yes, they have a similar sound but Doves are much more interesting. They are touring and playing Oxford but without the singer! That seems very strange.
Jimi's had addiction and mental health issues. They cancelled their tour in support of The Universal Want just before it started and he clearly still doesn't feel well enough to tour, or feels it risks him going back to old habits.

Interestingly, when Doves first started they swapped around on their instruments and took turns on lead vocals. Pretty sure Andy Williams sung two or three songs on Lost Souls.

I bloody love them, but this album isn't quite grabbing me yet - needs a few more listens!

Very much looking forward to seeing them in Oxford in a few weeks - reviews of the tour so far suggest they are doing a grand job without Jimi...

Proper into shoegaze at the moment, bands like Slow Crush, Mondaze, Nothing, Whirr, and Distressor. I do like some of the older shoegaze bands like Slow Dive and MBV.
I bought Amplitube 5 and have a lot of fun getting a good shoegaze tone.

But then a bit of Skeeter Davis, Leonard Cohen, and Motorhead etc just to wash it all down.

I'm seeing them in Birmingham on Saturday, can't wait.

The album is very melancholy, a definite headphones album.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of 'Distressor', not a band I'd heard of, but loving the sound! They like a single word song title don't they...

Life on Venus have some really good songs also, very catchy stuff!

I hadn't noticed about the single title songs! Good catch. The song 'Pale' is one of my favs, also 'Lust'.

Strange in with The Reytons, sell out shows and number one records yet seem to struggle to get the airtime and publicity of much less successful acts. Obviously don’t have label backing but that alone is a bit of a story, not that young and indie rock isn’t on trend so I suppose it’s that.

Same to a lesser extent with The K's. The mainstream isn't interested in blokes with electric guitars at the moment.

Just came to post this...

Bloody hell, hope this happens 🙏

What about Ride, they are worth a lisren

Saw the Lottery Winners last night at a very small venue in Berlin (considering they sold out big halls in the UK and are supporting Robbie Williams this summer). About 100 people there max.

Very interesting and lively band, good vibes all round and talented to boot. If you get a chance to see them live you're in for a treat.

Last I read management have confirmed a tour this year?!
Nothing officially confirmed as far as I know, but it appears the management team have made a mistake which looks to have let an Autumn tour out of the bag. This follows on from the band setting up a company last week which is usually followed by new music or a significant album re-release.

As I can't believe the band would do a 30th Anniversary tour for 'The Bends', that just doesn't sit as something very 'Radiohead', I'm hoping for a shadow drop of a new LP, and a tour to support it. 🤞

Enjoyed House of All at Flo Park last week and charming euro singer Anna Erhard tonight. There’s still decent gigs around if you look out for the listings or follow people you like on social media.
I'm off to see Anna Erhard tonight. As you say, lots of good live music still about. I still keep an eye on the Oxford music scene, and if I still lived there I'd be going to see Pale Blue Eyes, Melin Melyn, Pom Poko and Panic Shack in the next couple of months.
