WC Fixtures

I worked out I’ll probably be asleep when 52 of the 104 (!) fixtures are on so I can boycott half of it.

I’m really struggling with any enthusiasm for it this year. When will the authorities realise that more football does not always mean it’s better.

Well, it’s FIFA, I guess. They’re a private equity fund that has a passing interest in football.
 
While its a fair point about being asleep for half the games I am still looking forward to it, better than a summer with no football. Hopefully those of you who are not interested will just shut the f**k up about how you are not interested, like normal people do about stuff they are not interested in, but given the type of people an obscure league one football teams forum attracts that's probably wishful thinking.

We can only live in hope! It’s usually the same ones who take the time to post about not caring about the Premier League or women’s football.

You can put threads and even whole sections on this forum now so it’s easy to ignore what you aren’t interested in (I do it with all the political stuff).
 
I will watch some of it , I have no interest in watching football at 1:00am but we will see I'm not really looking forward to it but it's the world cup

I think it's expressing their sadness at something that used to be the highlight of football by some distance but is now watered down to such an extent to make it almost meaningless.

I will watch England games and big ties if they come together later on.

I get that once or twice, when its the 57th time it gets a bit much.

I don't like Golf, but I wouldn't feel the need to go on a thread about it and regularly say I don't like it.

Exactly this. The 32-team World Cup was perfect. Enough knife-edge stuff in the group games and then straight to the knock outs. The mix of international powerhouses, see-them-every-few-iterations and newbies to the tournament was always good. Now it's bloated beyond all recognition.

I know football should not stand still but there can be expansion too far. The Euros have gone the same was when it was 16 teams from 55 UEFA members to over 40% of Europe at the tournament now. It loses that exclusivity.

Of course I'll watch what I can. It's just the sense of losing what was the perfect format. It wasn't broken and didn't need fixing. The organisation who asked for it to change does though.

I don’t disagree with any of that, it wasn’t aimed at you, more at those who will be telling us in July for the 400th time that they don’t like international football.
 
We are celebrating the World Cup this year by flying to the States the day after it finishes. We are planning to take in a MLS match while we're over there, though (Charlotte vs Atlanta, so no chance of seeimg Shemmy unfortunately).

401st, actually, as I'll tell you again now:

I don't like FIFA international football. Give me Guadalupe vs French Guiana any day of the week.

You don’t like the original FIFA on the Sega Megadrive that came out in 1994? It had a decent amount of international teams but you are right it didn’t include those two. But dated now but back then it was pretty revolutionary, think you are being harsh on it.

I can go one better - I don't generally like football on TV at all unless it somehow involves Oxford United. I'll watch international games if one of our squad is playing, and I'll watch other UK games if the outcome affects our promotion/relegation, but other than that I don't watch many games other than our own.

I still play FIFA Road To World Cup 98 on my Nintendo 64, but I was more of a Pro-Evo kinda guy growing up.
 
After missing out on all the ballots, and then getting ****ed over by FIFA technical incompetence when the tickets went on general sale, I toyed with a boycott of the World Cup.

For about 24 hours.

And then I remembered that the World Cup has basically been my favourite thing in the world since I was a seven year old kid screaming Josimar* as I belted the ball out of the school playground for the nth time, and now I live within an hour's drive of two World Cup stadiums......and even though it's bloated, and cynical, and FIFA are the world's worst criminal enterprise, I still love it with all my soul!

Since I've been working the resale markets hard and, without having to remortgage the house, have got me some tickets for Norway vs. Senegal, Ivory Coast vs. Curacao and then England vs. Panama. Can't wait (even though actually getting to the stadium, in NJ at least, is going to cost a bundle!)

There's still going to be some late nights for me (some of the games don't kick off until midnight east coast time) but I can't imagine I'm going to miss too many games.


(*anyone who's my age will know which World Cup I speak of......anyone who has no clue who I'm talking about should go look up his goals against Northern Ireland and Poland on YouTube!)
 
The time zone issue is just how it is with world cups. It’s a global game. We had it with Japan and Brazil. And obviously when it was in Russia or Qatar or South Africa it was tough for those in the Americas or the far east.

Don’t underestimate the love of the game in the USA though. The fact that they have other sports doesn’t mean there isn’t a huge population of people that love the game.

If anyone has access to later round games let me know. Me and my daughter are doing England v Croatia in Dallas, missing the next two as her team made national finals in Virginia , then headed to any England game we can in Miami , Atlanta , Mexico City etc
 
There really is going to be be very little excitement for the first two weeks until we reach the final round of group games. I wonder whether the insane complications of working out who the best placed third placed teams are going to be might add a bit of extra spice to these games?

Third round of group games are always my favourite part of the tournament. Love working out all the machinations and seeing teams get more and more desperate.

One thing's for sure, if you're a smaller country just hoping to make the knockouts, it's going to be a big advantage to be in one of the later groups.

For example, if Argentina avoid doing what they did four years ago and don't lose a game they shouldn't, Algeria and Austria will play eachother in the final group game and will both know exactly what they have to do to qualify - so we could get some weird reenactment of the Disgrace of Gijon, just with Algeria being the culprits this time, not the victims.

But the teams in Groups A, B and C will have no idea whether 2 (unlikely), 3 or 4 points will be enough so their final games might turn out to be a bit bonkers!

Absolute spawn of satan, 60% skin & stone and the remaining "fruit" is just green slime.

Don`t mind a nice guacamole though..... and yes I know. :ROFLMAO:🤷‍♂️
