So polling stations open in America soon. Who do you think will win the 2024 election? (Not who you want too)

This was the YF poll for the 2020 election:

We narrowly got it right.

I think Kamala will win and it will be more comfortable then people were expecting. The postal votes have been dominated by women (which is better news for Harris), men between 18-30 haven't been voting in great numbers which unless they turn out today is bad news for Trump, Harris has momentum and Trump has gone completely nuts in the last few days. So called Trump stocks (crypto, for example) havent been performing well in the last few days so markets might be thinking it's Harris.

All that said, I have a really bad record of predicting elections and clearly live in my own bubble.

I am optimistically , like you, going with Harris more comfortably than the polls suggest.
Was the Iowa poll suggesting that Harris had overtaken Trump an outlier?
Hopefully the Democrats get people out to vote, as they realise how even more dangerous Trump seems to be getting ( the first few days could be quite nasty after I win)

I really, really hope Harris wins. Trump is even more unhinged than last time he got to be president, and *some* of his supporters (even the ones he put on the podium at his rallies) are complete swivel-eyed loons.

I dread to think what will happen both in the US and internationally if Trump wins - and if he loses, then it is going to be a tense time in the US anyway. As with the UK, they have got to find a way of reducing the stupid tribalism in politics. My sister-in-law lives in the States and is a Republican - she says that she simply cannot vote for Trump, and will not vote for Harris. I think there may be quite a lot of that sort of thing going on with the normal Republican voters.

Totally agree. Whilst people will broadly support parties it is healthy for "party supporters" to show scepticism about what is on offer from either / all sides. Good on your sister-in-law.

I hope it Harris ... thing is the voters do deserve who/what they vote for , like here in the UK, we had total fruit loops elected on the strength of their election slogans ( Johnson for example) - Locally , in Kidlington, they vote for non-green, greens. Voters are inevitably rather stupid in general, I find

Mentally prepared for a Trump victory. I'll be opening the champagne for breakfast if it is Harris.

Trump has lost the plot. He has nothing but a couple of buzzwords about the economy, jobs and migrants and the rest is barely comprehensible. Him winning the presidency is a reward for a life of idleness, bullying, greed, misogyny and bigotry. It would be just if Harris, who appears to be a good egg, wins instead.

Remember how cordial and respectful the 2008 race between Obama and McCain was? Two intelligent guys who just agreed to disagree on things but both with an aim to make their country better. Can't the US go back to that? The GOP choose someone who is not just a pumped up ego and the Democrats to find talent from within rather than hand wringing about their choice.

Don't really care trumps nuts and Harris is anti UK.
But think Trump will get it just

It's just mad their election takes nearly 2 years, I've had enough after 30 days here

Trump won't be as bad as people make out and Harris won't be as good, in fact nothing much will change as the US presidency only gives you two years to do anything before you are either a lame duck or busier trying to get elected again before rinse and repeat. Can't see why everyone gets their knickers in a twist about an election that is ridiculously overlong and overblown.

Didn't agree with McCain's politics but what a class act from head to toe

Worth watching again. Where McCain would throw water on fires like the woman was about to start, Trump throws chip pan oil. I wouldn't have voted for him but he acted with dignity throughout his career and during the campaign.

(McCain did choose a complete loon in Sarah Palin as a running mate to appeal to the US's conservative right, mind.).

I know that politics should be about choosing the right person because they have policies that you agree with. However, in this case that almost becomes irrelevant to it being anyone but Trump.

He is a proven rapist, sexual offender, fraudster and liar. He campaigns on hate and division, targeting the poorest and disadvantaged to vote for him whilst milking millions out of the system for himself and his family.

And Elon Musk, an equally despicable individual in my view, is openly showing how elections can be bought. He's not even hiding it.

Biden has been useless, Harris may not be much better. But Trump is one of the most dangerous men in global politics and I hope that he is not only beaten, but my a large enough margin that we don't see the country ripped apart in the aftermath of this.

Then the US needs to spend the next 4 years building both parties so that there are credible candidates to be put forward next time on all sides of the political spectrum. The US deserves better, and globally we all need better.

Mmm not sure about that.
Putin will be rooting for Trump.
In my view, Trump will be awful for democracy.
IF Trump introduces the tariffs he us suggesting then world trade could be affected.
Trump may not be as bad as we fear but will be a disaster.

I agree with your point about Putin will be rooting for Trump because if he wins I think Russia will just take the whole of the Ukraine and I doubt if they will stop once they do.
Trump will stop aid whether financial or Military and I can’t see Europe being able to to compensate that.

I admire your optimism. After he was at least somewhat held in check last time by having long term White House advisors and experienced Republican politicians moderating his wilder excesses, he has basically said that this time he is going to fill the place with people who will just do what he says. And if you have paid any attention at all to some of the stuff he has said in the last few weeks, that is very worrying indeed. I hope we don't have the chance to find out.

It will be horrific if Trump wins, and a global catastrophe if the Republicans keep control of the House of Representatives.

Trump has spent his four years out of power using the completely incomprehensible hold he has over the Republicans to have sympathetic sycophants installed into many positions of power, and if both those things happen there'll be nothing to stop him acting on the very worst of his impulses. I don't even want to think about what will happen if he and they win.

I am hoping it's Harris basically because i think Trump is an arrogant w****r.

You may need a lot of ice - if the polls are anywhere close to accurate then chances are it’s going to come down to Michigan and/or Pennsylvania, and they’re going to be on a knife edge. Chances are they won’t finish their counts until Wednesday afternoon and if a recount is necessary then it’ll be the end of the week before we get a result.

And if any of the inevitable lawsuits that follow get any traction, then you could be looking at December (see Bush vs. Gore).

Anyways, I did my civic duty this morning…..even though it won’t really matter. I live in NJ and my vote won’t have any impact because we’re going to vote Harris by a landslide. Couple of my colleagues live over the river in PA and their votes may decide the election. It’s a truly dumb system - even more so than what n the UK.

I suspect Trump will win because I still think there’s a bunch of guilty Trump voters who won’t admit it but vote for him because he’ll probably cut their taxes. Although there have been some more positive signs - and some people are suggesting that the Trump rhetoric has gone up another angry notch because he’s getting poll data that suggests he’s losing.

We’ll see. It just may not be tonight.
