University Challenge

Question tonight on University Challenge. Which two football clubs did Robert Maxwell try to merge in 1983, calling them Thames Valley Royals. Answers; Arsenal & Tottenham, then QPR & Crystal Palace……….
And annoyingly Amol Rajan gave the answer as 'Reading and Oxford' omitting 'United' and incorrectly saying Reading first. I'm now questioning every answer they give as they rarely agree with me!

On the subject of unexpected mentions of OUFC, yesterday I started a novel by Peter Tickler an Oxford based crime writer, who is obviously an Oxford fan, The book is Blood on the Cowley Road. Two cenrtral characters are OUFC fans although sadly one has been murdered and ended up in Iffley lock, There is a scene outside the Priory pub before a match v Bristol Rovers with mentions of Julian Alsop and Paul Wanless so that dates when the novel is set.

I will say no more as some may wish to track down this book.

If you enjoy crime fiction like Morse, Rubus and Thursday Murder Club (not deep and meaningful) you will enjoy Peter Tickler's novels, many set around Oxford.

I read that a few years ago. It's not bad, but the OUFC references were a bit dated when I read it, so would be even more so now.

Worth searching out, if you like crime novels with Oxford (and Oxford United) references.

If it's books with reference to Oxford that interest then try M S Morris. The M & S refers to brother and sister, they wrote a series of detective novels all featuring D.I. Bridget Hart who is based at Kidlington and, in the novels, lives in Wolvercote. Good story lines and not too taxing.

Not that I can remember any football references, but Simon Mason has three (I think) books in a recent crime series based in Oxford. Also worth digging out the Zoe Boehm novels by Mick Heron, he of Slow Horses fame, although not all based in Oxford, it is her home town,

I haven't read the book, but I already suspect Julian Alsop as the main culprit and a banana as the murder weapon.

Please tell me Mick Heron is Brian Heron's father/brother/son. 🙏
