UK/European viewing figures

I’ve definitely watched less of this than any tournament since 2002. It’s a combination of viewing times, negative sentiment around the tournament, and being older. I’m currently coming to terms with the fact that, if England get through tomorrow, I’m highly likely to miss their next match in the small hours of Monday.

For me it’s the timing of the games. I used to pretty much watch all the games but one really watching 2 or so a night.
 
I've enjoyed it more than I've enjoyed an international tournament for years.

Very little cynical football, well-refereed, a lot of entertaining games. Silly times means you can dip in and out.

Of course there's a lot that stinks it up, but that's all been there for decades. That doesn't make it right, but I'm done banging my drum on this one. The horse hasn't so much bolted as bought an off-shore island.


Just on VAR: this WC has shown how much the PL has become the VAR show, rather than anything to do with football.

Agreed on the reffing. Much better.

There have already been some genuinely entertaining games now we've left the boring group stage. No point in watching any of that first round, to be honest.

I've also come to terms with controversies like ticket pricing. Clearly we were wrong - FIFA have ripped people off but they're eating it up, with a full house at every game. If there are that many stupid people in the world then fair play to FIFA for extracting their cash.

I don't particularly care for a 1am alarm next week though. As mentioned above - this doesn't feel like 2002.
 
The games in the night are going to get low viewing figures in comparison to prime time games but I bet they get very high viewing figures compared to what is usually on at that time. Unless you are off or work weird hours then not much you can do about it, you have to seep sometime. Think The England games have been getting over 80% of the viewig public though, which in this day and age is unheard of.

I watch the afternoon/evening games live and then catch up with the highlights of those I have missed, streaming has made this, considering its kick off times, easily accesible really. Been an enjoyable world cup.

Most of those who moan about it on here on here moan about everything, its their factory setting, but seem to have watched quite a lot of it.

It’s been like that for a while now. For some reason in this country we just aren’t very good at using VAR. it has killed the game over here.

As for the World Cup so far, I have only actually watched 1 full game which was England v Croatia. Like NSB, I am really struggling to get into it. Maybe once we get to the 1/4s it might get better but the 48 teams is far too many.
 
I've watched pretty much every game apart from the ones in the middle of the night. I quite like watching the highlights of those on BBC iPlayer first thing in the morning and updating my world cup wall chart afterwards (I've never bothered with one of those before but my father in law gave me his shortly before he died so I feel some weird compulsion to do it).

Been very impressed with the reffing and most of the VAR, although I feel there's some big club bias that still sneaks in. Would be interested to see how many of the innovations, like the five-second rules, are used in the league next season

Agree, its been decent from what I've seen. The time difference has nade it impossible to watch all games as an employed person but that was to be expected. The next World Cup is in Spain and Morocco so there won't be any issues.

First few games are in Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina I think so you might miss a couple.
 
I've quite enjoyed it (more than I expected to), the refs and VAR have been sensible and there haven't been any big controversies or injustices that I've seen. Downsides are the kickoff times, which mean I've missed a lot of the good games, and what generally seems to be more a good-natured than a passionate atmosphere in the grounds.

Wasn't that so FIFA can basically prevent South America, Africa and Europe all from qualifying to host the next tournament, which means Saudi Arabia had a clear path to host in 2034?? I remember reading something about that.

Probably, the reason they gave was its the centenary World Cup but only Uruguay hosted that World Cup I think so why the other countries had to be involved seems suspicious, why hosting a couple of games should rule a whole continent out of hosting the whole shebang is also suspicious.

In the era of streaming these are big numbers, especially given the kick off times of some of these games.

Probably because Uruguay doesn't have the infrastructure to host a 48/64/185 team tournament

Can't be that as the tournament had already been awarded to Spain/Portugual/Morocco before the decision to hold games on a third continent a long way away was made. Although you are probably right about it now going to 64 teams, the extra groups will be put in South America and more games will be held over there.

I think it must have something to do with the number of American owners and the influence of American TV Networks.

Watch any American sport and the video reviews or non-stop. Every time they go to a 'video review', there's an ad break.

I think it is inevitable that sooner or later there will be 'in game' ads during VAR reviews in the Premier League.

Graham Westley has loved every minute of the 'Hydration Breaks' this World Cup. I bet he's sat there in the local pub telling everyone that he came up with that 15 years ago.
