Ryan Williams, no thanks, I don’t think we’ll be going in for him, as Robinson said yesterday on Radio Oxford the club will be going for better quality players, championship standard, we need more power and strength, Robinson said this too, don’t get this obsession with former players, no thanks

Williams was another winger never wanted to see on an oppo teamsheet
Whether it was because of a lack of faith in Ruffels defending or their own ability, am unsure
Clearly better than Hall, Forde, Henry and Lee in that position
Does that answer it for you.

“Experienced winger” having a medical this week according to OM. Assume it’ll be Williams, great stuff. 27yo proven quality at this level both on and off the ball with the versatility to play across the front three, adding something the squad was lacking last season.

KR wants 4 wingers as replacements for Barker, Lee, Shodipo and possibly Hall.
Whats that mean for Clare and Cooper?

KR basically said on Radio Ox, that it's up to Sean Clare to come back and show that he wants to play for the club, a club that has been top 6 for two seasons and therefore has that pressure. If he doesn't fancy it or doesn't fancy the pressure then we'll sell him.

It’s not an answer to anything, it’s just your view

Just on Ryan Williams.
5 goals and 5 assists last season which would have seen him joint third in our assists table and joint fifth in the scorers table.
More assists than Agyei, Brannagan, Gorrin, Long, Shodipo, Sykes who all featured 35 times or more.

He's clearly going to be part of the puzzle, rather than THE answer, especially with KR saying he wants 3 or 4 wingers.
Definitely worth having as part of the squad and has been a big part of the Pompey side who have effectively had two similar seasons to us. It's not like we're signing him from a side that have struggled to stay up.

Yes yes, but how is he at full-back?

He is quick but not as skilful as Henry or Lee

Not exactly filling the squad with pace if we sign both. From memory Ryan Williams isn't slow but he isn't rapid either.
Well if we sign Williams and Lee on permanent deals, that leaves loan spaces for pacy wingers. Ryan Williams is no slug..

I'm surprised by the comments about Williams not being that quick. I remember him being very fast when he was last here.

FWIW I think it's a good signing. He's more of a 'proper' winger in that he likes to beat his man 1v1 and doesn't always look to cut inside.

Opinions on Williams from a Pompey fan:
‘Zero end product, ok squad player
Started in a highly productive front 4 and mostly as like a second striker, and somehow barely got a goal contribution
He’s rapid and works really hard so there is a time and a place for him, but he’s just simply not a starter at this level (for a play off+ team anyway)’

Because they’d know what a play off team needs? 😅
