General Top European Club Discuss 28 Man Squads & 6 Subs

One thing that never gets mentioned is that they already hoover up all of the best talent, which I believe if under 21, do not need to be registered in the premier league

I always go back to Villa winning the top flight in a 42 game season on questionable pitches using just 14 players all season - they seem to have been able to manage the workload

Just ridiculous. So many players being played to sit on the bench or becoming 'impact' players with twenty minutes here and there.

Already in lower leagues they've binned off substitutes in the vocabulary and replaced it with 'finishers' in the sense of players who come on to finish the match. Part of being a footballer was using your energy at the right times to be most impactful throughout the game. That side is dying off to be replaced by a constant churn.

Intrigue and excitement in football doesn't always come from having players with loads of energy on the pitch at all times.

We'll have special teams for corners, penalties etc next.

"workload" my a**e. Paid millions to play 1, 2 or maybe 3 lots of 90 minutes in a week. Pathetic.
What about the underpaid, overworked health workers (for example) who do ridiculously long shifts EVERY BLOODY DAY for a pittance.

It is a lazy comparison when people try and compare elite athletes with the normal day person. It's like comparing Oranges and Apples.

Yes I think footballers are over paid and over protected to an extent but I also think they play far too many games in a season these days and are more likely to get injured due to this. They are expected to be at peak fitness for those 2 or 3 games a week. Look at the out cry on here when our own team start a season slow and not 'fully fit'.

I've never really understood the problem with comparing apples to oranges, I rather suspect that's a different discussion though.

Just chuck em all in a blender and you still end up with a smoothie

Don’t know what you’re all kicking off about. The big clubs just don’t have enough advantages as it is - if this gives them a little more compared to everyone else then what’s not to love?

Do you know what would reduce player work load? Not having extended Champions Leagues, Europa leagues, conference leagues, 48 team World Cups, Club World Cups.
Yes but have you considered that might mean a little bit less money for the US shareholders that are working tirelessly to undermine everything that makes football good?

Complete and utter rollox especially after we have just finished yet another international break, club world cups, multiple European "options" where it seems impossible to get "knocked out" until after several group games, then you might only get demoted to another tinpot Euro trophy.

Sack some of that money grab stuff off and that`ll lighten the load.

If squad were reduced to say 18 and 2 subs, players would just have to adjust their level/type of fitness to make it through the whole season. The overall pace of the game would be less than it currently is, players would have to adjust and pace themselves, or end up blowing out of their arses with 30 minutes to go.

Or we could have a squad of 36 and 10 subs allowed, potentially the pace of the game would be greater than it currently is, we could end up with 10 separate outfield players for each half. It feels like that’s where we’re heading.

At that point it becomes like American Football!
