World Cup Thomas Tuchel - England Manager

A non-story.

Don't give those desperate to be offended, an excuse to be.

FWIW, Tuchel is highly unlikely to win the WC in the United States and Mexico, let's be honest. The climate will lend itself to a South American side winning it. Should it be a European team, then I'd suggest we are behind France and Spain in the pecking order, at least.

I find it very hard to get excited by the current group. Players not celebrating goals (Reece James) and the national team being led by a German. It lacks a degree of patriotism that has been seen previously. People in this country like something to get behind, it is in our make up as a nation. I just can't really see it with this current set up. This camps games were underwhelming, but reflective of the state of international football. It's another by-product that continues to be exponentially damaged by the Premier League riches, imo.

Its a weird appointment in the regard that its an uphill task for England to win a tournament in those conditions, yet we have appointed a very short term manager to do that. However we are are co hosts of a much more winnable Euros two years later, our record when we host/play at home in tournaments is a creditable won/semi final/final, our record in tournaments outside of Europe is Quarter finals at best. Can't help but think we could have have had a go at winning this one, probably wouldn't, while also building towards a pretty good chance in 2028 under the same manager.

It’s old fashioned but not offensive. I’m half German and have had plenty of crap German “humour” and coments aimed at me over the years (til the 90s at least). The only thing that ever offended me was when a fellow phd student that I’d known for years found out that my mum was German and said “I wish you’d never told me that”.

That is really poor.

Interested in people's views on this. It's the sort of story I hate as it's just done for clicks (it's unbelievably the top sport story on the Times which I find much more offensive then the joke).

I like Harry Redknapp but I don't find what he said this time to be funny (just very boring) but neither do I think it is offensive. It is a slightly off-colour joke made by an older guy at a light hearted event. If you found it funny (and by the sounds of it many people did) that is all good too. It does not need faux outrage and then people getting wound up defending him and everyone getting annoyed.
To be honest, I’d have been surprised if Harry hadn’t have done this and even more surprised he didn’t don a little black tache for full effect while he was at it. He’s a long retired, bung taking bore making a few quid on ads and personal appearances.

Have you ever been to one of these football dinners? A panel of washed out pros and managers telling the same old jokes, stories and apocryphal tales that were largely unfunny the first time around. It's like watching bad comedians from a 70s working mans club, with a little racism, sexism and bitterness thrown in for effect.

As said elsewhere, a non-story, apart from the fact that Harry's corporate partners and the media may well think twice before booking him again.

“APPEARED to make….” But makes the story better, doesn’t it?
Out of interest, how many times have you seen a man jolt his arm straight up and out with palm facing the ground and fingers closed together whilst saying “Ja” and talking about a German and you didn’t think it was a Nazi salute?

I don’t think the conversation is really about people getting offended, it’s about whether it makes someone a bellend. I’ve never seen someone do a Nazi salute and thought they were anything better than a bellend.

Just to question this point - the 2026 World Cup is going to be played in a vast array of climates!

If you ended up in Group G, for example, you would play all your games in Seattle, Vancouver and/or temperature-controlled SoFi stadium in LA. In June, none of those would feel the least bit out of place for an English side.

Win Group G, and your first three knockout matches would also be in Seattle and SoFi.
Then for your semi-final, you're going to Arlington, Texas but playing in AT&T stadium which has a retractable roof and AC if it gets crazy hot.

The only time you would possibly have to play in hot and sticky conditions is the final (which is just down the road from me, in Rutherford NJ). And even then, it's variable. Can be horrible, can be really pleasant.

By contrast, end up in Group A and your first five games will be in Mexico and then you'll get to go to Miami and enjoy the heat there for your QF!

In total, there's 16 venues being used for the World Cup - with those being played further north, and those with roofs and climate control, it's only likely to be 'South American' conditions in 7 of them.

Will the World Cup actually go ahead? I find it hard to be confident your government will let all those foreigners in to play a foreign sport
