I’ve found out that Trump didn’t even know what a red card was until Monday.

The highlights are magnificent. The US were awful and the third goal for Belgium is a real treat.

It’s the most just result of the World Cup. When it comes to ‘soccer’, I’d normally be cool towards the men’s US team since they aren’t one of the bigger fish in world football. On this occasion, I’ve never wanted a team to lose more.

Me too - and I think it is a bit of a shame for the USA players.

In their earlier games they were athletic and quick and showed flashes of real skill. Unfortunately, the actions of Trump/Infantino and the frankly ridiculous ravings of some of their supporters on social media (as well as the current reputation of the USA and the fact we know any real US success would have been used for political propaganda) have made them hugely unlikeable.
 
I also had to double check the Tim Ream was actually a footballer, having seen the highlights from last night. He was nothing short of woeful.

Maybe I should go easy on a 38 year old, clearly at the end of his career, but all the same!
 
I just loved that Infantino watched the game in person.

Unfortunately for the US team, they have effectively been fully tainted by association. They whinged about the red card but then that is hardly unique to them.

This farce was the doing of Infantino/the FIFA committee involved and Trump.

So I am happy Belgium won purely to counter the naked corruption by Infantino/Trump/FIFA so a perfect result.

It isn't hysterics getting angry at the open and blatant corruption.
 
I get that there are a lot of ageing lefties on here who have always had a problem with the US, but I can't get that excited about the US losing to Belgium, they have better players and more history in the sport than the Yanks, we have seen with Mexico and Canada that home advantage only gets you so far, we have seen with other results that the early promise of a new footballing world has collapsed in the latter stages, so its hardly an earth shattering result that the septics have got a beating in a sport they are s**t at, just a lower league level team of committed athletes, very little skill so it was always coming.

I am all for punching down in football banter, still laughing at Scotland, but I think people seeing the US as a threat in world football are one step away from the funny farm, for your own good come back to the real word, they barley know the rules and their s**t league system doesn't have relegation and promotion.
 
Not that social media is the world, and you can't trust 95% of if, but the amount of "the sport sucks because x, they should do this instead" type of posts from American's during the WC so far has proven that it will never catch on fully over there. So much of it is out of their control or "not entertaining" enough that they just don't understand it. The backlash to the ridiculous decision to suspend that red card will just go over their heads and they'll go back to being world champions in a load of sports designed around providing a distraction whilst eating your dinner.

A lot of that social media is just click/rage bait as well, unfortunately any made up stuff like that drives traffic.
 
So after tonight we are down to the business end of the tournament, the minnows have had their fun, now the proper teams get to fight it out.

France, Morocco, Spain, Belgium, England, Norway, Argentina/Egypt, Switzerland/Colombia.

The only surprises so far were Paraguay beating the Germans and Norway overcoming Brazil, the rest of the last 8 is pretty much as you would have called it given the initial draw.

My thoughts will be with @holdsteady and @tonyw tomorrow when there is no football at all for the first time in weeks. You guys might be able to get outside for a walk or something...

The only threat the U.S. had was Trump.
Why did Infantino allow such a blatantly wrong decision is beyond me.
Was the tournament threatened? Was he threatened? Was he paid?

I don't it's just 'the lefties' that have an issue. Basically anyone who believes in fair-play and opposes corruption has an issue with it.

Even the Americans weren't totally comfortable with the decision. American ex-goalkeeper Brad Friedel was quite vocal on TalkSport about how he wasn't happy with Trump's involvement.

Not entirely sure what being 'lefty' or not has to do with nor liking the blatant corruption being shown by Trump/Infantino/FIFA. I can't imagine there are many people of any reasonable political complexion who thought it was OK. The reason people are happy about Belgium beating the USA team is not because Belgium were underdogs, or because they don't like the USA in general - it's because the cheating didn't work.

I don't think I have seen anyone on here who thinks the USA are a 'threat in world football'?

I don’t think anyone agreed with the decision, it was obviously Trump and Infantino being twats and I think most people enjoyed seeing it come to naught (even if it wasn’t really a red card) but even with (yet more) FIFA dodginess the USA were never a threat to win it, surprised they got as far as they did with that team if I am honest, without home advantage, an easy group and the new easier qualifying path that’s a go out in the group stage team.

I get that the US getting good at football might be a bit annoying, but it’s a long, long way from happening on that showing so nothing to worry about, as for the country, you ageing lefties might not like it but plenty of us do, it’s a huge, rich, vibrant land full of interest and opportunity.

Plenty of ageing lefties in the US who love the US as much, if not more than you clearly do ;)

However, not everyone who loves the US is prepared to turn a blind eye to the shame and embarrassment being brought on the country right now. That's the obvious difference.
