The Winter Cricket thread

Jennings was out to a very poor shot.
Burns is really making the best of a pretty flat pitch.
England just HAVE to stop screwing up the first innings of Tests.

Oh dear that was absolutely appalling!!
Only Anderson and Burns can come out of that match with any credit. Jennings has to go. Too many non specialist players who are in the main one day players who don't have a clue how to save a long Test match.
Can we please get back to a team that contains five specialist batsman, an all rounder(not a team full of them!) a wicket keeper(not three of them!) and four specialist bowlers picked on merit and to suit the conditions. I'm afraid that there are too many blue eyed boys in the set up and it needs a shake up. To be bowled out for 77 on that pitch was awful and then to allow them to get 460 odd for 6 declared was dismal. The bowling was fodder.
Only Bangladesh and Zimbabwe are below the Windies in the rankings who are 8th, we are 3rd.

Er no. We don't have enough decent specialist batsmen to even get a 1,2,3 and haven't for ages.
If we had the batsmen they would get in no doubt

Nasser Hussain suggested that it was appalling the preparation for the series.
2 Micky Mouse games of 2 days. Playing in a Country where they play with 4 pace bowlers having just played in a Country where the seamers have bowled a few overs in every Test.
We seem to have totally underestimated the WIs
It's pathetic how consistently bad we are on the first games of a tour. We folded like a cheap deck chair again, and I'm at a point where I cannot wait for Bayliss to P**s off elsewhere as I'm done with his test coaching. The fact they think Jennings can open the batting is just laughable. The lad has no technique against pace other than a swipe and a prod but it's more Gary Ballance syndrome. Joe Denly simply cannot be any worse.

The WIs are a decent team, but Root and Burns made 2 massive mental mistakes before breaks. This team is mentally fragile and when they are undercooked, they are unable to get out of the hole they dig themselves into.

I feel sorry for any fans that waste their time off travelling to watch England's first test circus.

I was thinking of going to the WI. Boy an I glad I didn't!
Agree with all of that Gary. A disgraceful performance against an average team.
W e never seem to learn re the first Tests away.

Look at the preparation. It was a village standard and rules. Like always. To many players these days don’t play enough CC cricket. To much emphasis is based on white ball cricket and the rewards that go with it.

I disagree that there’s not enough specialist batsman out in CC cricket. England or Bayliss are obsessed with all rounders. Rashid at 10 sums it up. Leach is the better spinner but is a genuine rabbit with the bat. Rashad gets In purely because of his batting.

Well we have tried how many players at 1,2,3 since Strauss retired. How many have those have been good enough?
Now Jennings.
It is rubbish and there are clearly batsmen who would come in and do better?

bring back Geoff Boycott!.... proper opening batsman in test match conditions, even though he's been retired for more than a few decades, hed still do a better job than the white ball game batsmen asked to do a job in a test match

Denly in for Jennings is brave but seems a good decision.
Leach for Rachid in the 12.
I assume that It will be Curran or Leach for the 11th spot?

Or broad ;-)

Not convinced by Denley. Modest average in div 2 of CC and recently been playing Big Bash so not really had much red ball cricket

I reckon that Broad will play but good point.
Don't disagree re Denly but Jennings doesn't appear to have the technique to face the quicks

The thing is... Denly isn't Jennings who has sadly turned into a walking wicket in recent months. Not sure if Denly is the answer, but he can't be any worse can he?

Will be interesting how the lions get on when they play red ball in India. Few players in that squad who’ll be pressing a claim including Roy.

What playing Denley does do is create a right and left handed opening pair which is always a bonus.

I’m probably jinxing this, but here goes. He’s looking pretty good (although should have been out LBW).
