While parish councillors in my experience are unpaid, parish clerks are given a modest honorarium. There’s quite a lot of work involved if one does the job properly. Our parish clerk in Cambridgeshire gets about £150 a month.

The salary for clerk would have been about the 56K compo, a little while ago they advertised for a financial officer at around 46K I think

It means the Secretary of State has decided Cherwell has been performing badly enough on major planning applications that, from 9:00am on 15 June 2026, developers/applicants can potentially bypass Cherwell and submit certain major planning applications directly to the Secretary of State / Planning Inspectorate instead.


So it is basically saying:


Cherwell’s handling of major planning decisions has not been good enough, especially when judged by how its decisions have performed at appeal.

Excellent news for all future developments and this should be standard for all major projects up and down the country. I can't really blame CDC though as any local authorities should not be entirely burdened with such significant decisions especially when they are being hounded by malicious groups such as green brigades trying to sabotage such things. FOSB tried to thwart the planning meeting from happening on 3 separate occasions alone and that put the CDC in a very difficult position especially with timescales trying to ratify the (false) claims.

With Greens trying to block green projects up and down the country, they are a threat to growth and sustainability and having positions on councils where their remit is to auto-reject regardless of fact, it's important there is a clear route to past such things so projects aren't needlessly blocked through local power without reason.
