Podcasts The Dub

Found it a little disappointing this week - felt that TW was asked questions he had already answered, and nobody seemed to ask the "Where are we at with the new stadium?" question. Not much insight gained.

I agree with Foghorn. There is an existential threat to the club, no matter what division we are in over the next few weeks and months. If the stadium isn't firstly approved and then built - no club as we know it. While there was some interesting stuff in the programme, that 'elephant in the room' question needed to be asked and investigated.

It was almost as if they'd been told not to ask the question...

I thought Tim Williams came across very well. He made it pretty clear that if planning permission is refused, that's probably game over for the club- at least in its' current state. We'd probably then be looking at an AFCW-style phoenix club. Given that he's not going to speculate on the outcome of planning, I'm not sure what else he could have said.

I agree he came off well. But then again he tends to when he limits the amount of talking he does to fans/local media to highly managed/structured media appearances when he has a specific message and time to prepare.

He is materially ‘good’ at elements of his job in this situation. ie the ‘Corporate Timmy’ persona where he says a lot, uses multiple buzzwords and strategically placed phrases whilst divulging relatively little that he doesn’t want to and answering things diplomatically.

Key take away for me was a passing frank turn of phrase that we’d be looking for somewhere to play after 2026 for ‘a couple of years’ - which is what we all knew but it’s the first time I’ve seen any real acknowledgement at a senior level of the kind of timescales the delays we’ve seen over the past year have caused.

Also thought he tried hard to breeze through the changes in shareholdings in as trite, minimalist a way as possible. Maybe because it’s as simple and ‘binary’ (in his words) as he made it sound, maybe because he doesn’t love being pushed/questioned in any detail about our ownership structure, funding patterns etc.

I don’t think he’s a bad guy. And he presents himself well in a podcast forum like this when he does them infrequently and has time to prepare his key messages (and isn’t forced to deviate from them). As someone that works in a corporate environment I (as many others am sure) can recognise someone who is great at talking the talk, excels at using a LOT of words whilst saying as little of actual substance as he can get away with. I would agree it’s a huge blind spot on the part of The Dub team not to have asked more probing questions around the stadium, timelines, his perspective on the planning process etc. Such a huge blind spot in fact that my fear is that it can’t have been an accident (ie either they were only given limited time so did not have scope to get into ANY detail with him, just how he likes it, or because there were certain subject areas that were off limits).

He was competent, eloquent and on the surface pleasant enough. But as ever with me it’s more the devil in the detail of what he pointedly doesn’t say which generally leaves me with more questions than he ever answers.

Nailed it.

All of the above may have sound foundations but publicly the club aren't going to skew a planning pitch by unnecessary speculation. This is the first time that we have confirmed a possibility of extending at Kassam particularly when spades hit the Triangle ground which is a real safeguard for Kassam.Plus that as one wd have hoped a long term plan for all contingencies.

Absolutely - and as I said I thought he came across well. I’m sure if he could be free and easy with the detail it would make his job a lot more straightforward. I am just always keenly aware that he almost only ever speaks in forums where he gets to determine what is relevant and what we ‘need to know’. And has a track record of avoiding scrutiny from the supporter base

Really enjoyed the Dub all season. Not too long episodes so easy to digest after each game. The combination of the hosts works really well too.
Yes excellent and really look forward to the episodes.
Would personally prefer them to be maybe 15 minutes longer.
As you say, all of the people involved are really good and the mix of people works very well.

I would love it if they could get players/staff/atmosphere group leaders on with a bit more regularity. But as you said would mean episodes had to be 10-15 mins longer.

Dub is essential listening for me along with the NTT20 podcast.

Very open and honest interview. Not often you hear a player outright say that a manager being sacked was “needed”, mind.

Really pleased for him that his fortunes turned around so dramatically. Comes across as a decent guy, and his work off the pitch is first class.
I.was a little surprised at that.
He clearly really rates Rowett- I wonder how usual it is for a new manager to call the senior players and ask them.their view on what is needed?

Absolutely spot on. There is a reason why he keeps winning "community player of the year" at every club he goes to. A leader on and off the pitch.
