Current Staff The Des Buckingham Apology Thread

I have a feeling the man is heading for the very top of the game.

I really hope he can help us secure ourselves as a Championship side and that we are a better proposition to other managers looking to replace him when he does eventually outgrow us.

I'd written him off and fully expected him to be fired after Bolton away. I'm very pleased to have been proven so wrong.

The man is working wonders.

Only John Mousinho taking the job would soften the blow of Des leaving. It'd be awful.

We are so lucky he wasn't fired and it all came together!

Has a manager even gone from wanted out to god like status as quickly

Probably not!

I’m not sure I can recall a game in my 53 years a fan where one result has turned our fortunes around so starkly. Everton famously turned their fortunes around in a cup game against us and I think there must have been a game in that late promotion run under Denis Smith that set us on the way. Bolton away felt as low as it’s been for a while, it was a depressing performance and result. What’s followed has been quite incredible.

If/when we lose Des (sounds ridiculous even contemplating that already), I can see us going down the young, tactically astute, European manager model.

Our stock, and profile, continues to rise, and quickly. Even if we did lose Des in a year to eighteen months, I can see us taking another step up in the calibre of manager and players we can attract.

The future looks bright right now! (Cue a drubbing on Friday night!).

I’d like to think, a bit like Brighton, that we may already have an ongoing and ever evolving list of potential replacements. We have to be realistic, if Des continues on this trajectory and gets us settled around mid table then he’s on the radar of a whole bunch of clubs who could treble, if not quadruple, his salary. Loyalty and love of a club will, understandably, only stretch so far. No point worrying too much about it, let’s enjoy it and hope that we can perhaps emulate Brentford and Frank and keep Des at the helm all the way to the PL.

I mean, the scenario you describe is the absolute dream, but, as you say, there needs to be a concrete contingency. I get the feeling there probably is, or soon will be.

The likes of Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth is the model we should follow.

How exciting that trajectory feels more tangible!

Have already commented on this thread apologising that I ever doubted him. Read an interview the other day from Des and it was clear he was pretty much left to do everything on his own the first few months. Once he’d got his backroom staff in place you could see his style of play. The sooner he gets an improved contract (with massive release fee) the better

I strongly disagree with 90% of those who posted regarding Des between the turn of the year and Easter, but I don't believe that any of them need to apologise. People have opinions that may prove to be right or wrong after the event. That's life.

However, I do think that there are a number of posters who consistently knee jerk and panic, and they may benefit from taking a breath and having a little patience.

Last summer we had people saying that Sam Long wasn't good enough for a promotion challenging club, Tyler Goodrham needed a loan because he wasn't ready for League One, Mark Harris wasn't a goal scorer, Josh Murphy was a disgrace, and Henry and Bodin were too old to get contract extensions.

This summer we've had posters saying that the vast majority of last seasons promotion squad were not good enough for the Chsmpionship. This week alone we've had people digging out Sam Long (again), Ciaron Brown and Mark Harris. Several said that we shouldn't bring Cumming back. There were those that questioned a contract for Bennett. And then there is always Kip!

Maybe just give people the opportunity to prove themselves before giving up on them. If we've learnt anything from the last dozen or so games, it's that we've got players who give everything for their shirt and each other, and a manager and backroom team who know how to get the absolute best out of everyone.

Believe!

Let's not forget though that the vast majority of fans just get behind the team and the players 99 per cent of the time. A small minority of negative posters do not represent the masses. Many have had to eat so much humble pie they must have heart burn. Problem is that once you nail your colours to the mast, it's very difficult to admit how drastically wrong you have been so often.

After today I feel like apologising to Des again - sorry Des.

Lost for words at how tactically brilliant he has been post Bolton away.
Today was astonishing. Norwich’s players are probably better on paper, whatever that means - or more expensive- but they hardly threatened us. Just shows the importance of excellent management, coaching, and preparation.

I'd also say that I imagine even the negative fans on here generally support us when the games are on (there will be some who moan for the sake of it as in every fan base). There's nothing inherently wrong with saying where you think we can improve. The flip side is there were plenty of fans who stuck by Robinson for months too long on the basis of a couple of unsuccessful playoff campaigns years before, thought Eastwood was absolutely fine in goal and that it was silly to be wasting time trying to find a better left back than Ciaran Brown after he won player of the season by default because he always tried his best the season we nearly ended up in League 2.

There's all sorts of opinions and as ever the truth generally lies in the middle but it's a little simplistic to call out fans who have been critical and proven wrong while making out they've never been critical and proven right. No one gets everything right all the time.
Problem is that once you nail your colours to the mast, it's very difficult to admit how drastically wrong you have been so often.
Absolutely and this is a societal thing, not just football. Winning the argument generally takes precedence over being right and things often revolve into points scoring and twisting of facts to suit your argument with no intention of seeing the other side and being on the defensive so your view wins. Not helpful at all, I disagree with people plenty and to get on track there were plenty on here who went much too far in their criticism of Des but I always respect when they hold their hands up and admit they got it wrong.

Awww thanks man :)

I think the people at the club who failed to support him for the first few months, and then hovered their fingers above the ejector seat button more than once before things turned around, should perhaps be more apologetic than a few people on an internet forum. That the BBC claimed Buckingham was in the final round of candidates for the Wales job only 5/6 weeks ago suggests they might need to keep to their word a little better moving forward.

Every club dreams of being managed by a childhood fan who steers them to glory. We’re living the dream at the moment. Enjoy it while it lasts, and be thankful we have a proper, decent coach who also happens to be a decent person in charge. It wasn’t remotely like that for far too long.

I must admit I thought he should go and my very supportive mate in the pub reminds me of this every time I see him, sorry des, you've worked miracles .

There is one area that Des is underperforming on and where perhaps those early critics may feel less guilty - that is his fashion.

He arrived with tailored jacket and jeans. Fine we said but where from here?

I was disappointed to see him wearing a Superdry jacket at the Norwich match. Des - it’s not 2015 any more.

Would welcome @RyanioBirdio comments here. Maybe I am being harsh.

For Peterborough anything less than a Victorian riding cape from Des and I’m calling it.

Oh, don’t.

Seriously.

I’ve been f*****g furious with his fashion sense ever since his first game away at Cheltenham, when I expected to see him in a lovely wool coat with a roll neck and a nice watch jutting out from the sleeve when he was giving instructions, and instead had to see him standing in training gear with his hands in his pockets while wearing a pair of football boots.

It’s an absolute disgrace. The guy’s the best looking manager in the league and he doesn’t even try. It’s like She’s All That all over again.

As @RyanioBirdio said, Des had been left without support. I was worried about Des, he looked a forlorn figure in some of his interviews early in the New Year.

At Wycombe away, some of the crowd on the right side's reaction was very embarrassing and out of order from where I stood. The performance was not good, but Des didn't deserve that level of abuse.

I tend not to come on the forum when things aren't going well as I get so downhearted watching, the last thing I want to do is get even more depressed on here. Thankfully, I missed the worst of the criticism.

Even if it goes tits up, which I don't think it will. Des will always be the hometown boy who got the club back, where I started watching Oxford in the 90's. COYY!.
