National News The Brexit Thread 🇬🇧🇪🇺

So at last we find out that 'taking back control of our borders' means expecting criminals importing illegal food products to voluntarily pitch up at an inland border facility to have their stash checked. Yes, what possibly could go wrong but more to the point who in government thinks this is a wiz of an idea?

"The first vote estimates are beginning to come in and then in a few hours’ time the first projected results will come. They’ll appear on a giant screen that’s been set up in the European Parliament’s hemicycle voting chamber, where the 720 new MEPS will sit.

Austria's far-right Freedom Party is already on course to win, according to a trend forecast based on exit polls. That could be repeated in several other EU countries, with the greens and the liberals largely paying the price.

The leaders of France and Germany warned ahead of this vote that the very future of Europe was on the ballot.

That sounds dramatic but the shape of this European Parliament will influence where Europe goes next. And this will be a parliament that takes us almost to 2030.

Big decisions are still be taken on enlargement, the integration of European energy, climate regulation, the size of the European budget, and of course Europe’s response to the war in Ukraine."

It’s getting interesting. France, Belgium and Austria lurching to the right. Meanwhile an incoming Labour Government seem likely to move Britain closer to the EU, without any hope of a referendum. It also looks like Labours front bench will all have been brexit opposers

Well, don’t vote for them then - that’ll teach ‘em.

Other than France and Austria, I'm not sure the far right lurch across Europe really materialised did it?

Anyway, Macron has called the French electorates bluff by calling an election, so let's see if they really want the far right in control of their country or whether it was just a bit of a electoral tantrum/protest that they are only willing to inflict on the European Parliament 🤔

If Marine Le Pen wins this snap election it could be the end for the European Union as her party want out as well. Not sure about Belgium or Austria

I think Le Pen is open to staying in the EU. The real challenge for the EU will be if Germany and Austria go towards the extreme right as looks likely.
Anna Soubry last night described Nigel Farage on Sky News as extreme right and indicated Labour were moderate. I’d imagine she’s posturing with hopes of return to front line politics.
Braver man also wanting a slice of the action by making overtures towards Farage

I'd say that is right though. Farage is certainly extreme right, baring in mind that 'extreme right' in UK politics doesn't equate to the cliched view of what that means. Labour are moderate left under the current leadership, but they do have some extreme left parts in there.

Of course she is, they are both cynical, poisonous and divisive characters. That's the only way they will win any sort of power.

Farage knew exactly what he was saying about Sunak, in spite of the comment that followed regarding where soldiers were drawn from in WWII. He's slightly more subtle than his hero Enoch Powell, but how this public school educated, ex city trader gets away with the 'man of the people' schtick is amazing.

Snake oil is still an attractive proposition to some, it would seem.

There was a long (30 min?) interview with John Major on the telly the other day. I don't have a lot of time for Major's politics, but just listening to him was pretty refreshing - free of the knee jerk, fibbing and pompous 'post-truth' drivel of many politicians (on both sides of the Atlantic) in the current day. You got the impression that a) he had thought about things before opening his mouth and b) he was considering what was best for the country rather than any vested interest group. To keep this post on topic for this thread, his opinion of Brexit was that it had been a complete disaster and was mis-sold to the voters by the Leave side telling porkies.
