@tonyw lives in the States, so I guess naturally writes “checks”. I’ve noticed that our son who’s been in the States for nearly nine years is using some US spellings nowadays.

The young people I work with increasingly use American pronunciations of words and American words like trash, it drives me nuts.

I like to think this forum is a refuge from that!

Our vet ONLY accepts cheques, surprisingly she is still really busy.

Trash has long been an English word, believe 16th century.

When I first moved to Oz in 1995 I was surprised that personal cheques weren't a thing. I rapidly realised they were basically unnecessary. The only thing I had to use cash for that I would have used a cheque for in the UK was my rent. Even back then everythign else was EFT or credit/debit card. The only time I've ever used a cheque here was a bank cheque for a large amount.

A lot of Americanisms (including that godawful accent) are leftovers from 16th century English when the pilgrims went there (except the spellings, which were artificially created when Webster wrote his first dictionary, I believe)

The godawful accent was originally a mixture of SW rustic and Irish, I read somewhere

Whereas a lot of English words and spellings then changed and become more Francophilic in the 17th and 18th centuries when everyone at court thought France was cool.

I mean just look at it.....'Cheque'. Positively dripping with Gallic pretensions......just like aubergines and courgettes and biscuits......
