General Teams you have a soft spot for

They were evicted from their ground in Aylesbury about 20 years ago now, and haven't played in the town since. Its a shocking situation really, hopefully they'll be able to find a ground back in their own town at some point.

I watched them at their old Turnfurlong Ground (between the Tring and Wendover Roads) back in the late 70-'s, early 80's, I've obviously been past it but don't think I ever went to a game at the Buckingham Road ground. Good side back in the day, I seem to remember Keith Baker being in goal for them at that time and if memory serves me right Leo Markham was player manager before, I think, Bobby Goulds brother, Trevor Gould, taking over sometime in the 80's. Cliff Hercules (great name!!) was just coming on the scene and he went on to score 100's for them over about 20 years !! A town of that size should certainly be hosting football at a decent level - National League or National League South.

Years ago, around the late 70’s, I used to watch Aylesbury United as I was born there and my dad was still living there. Lost interest in them although that was rekindled a bit when they reached the Conference in late 80’s. Nothing since though and don’t know anything about them now.

The only other Oxfordshire team I look out for is Wantage Town as they’re local to where I live. Nice little set up there too and have been once or twice to watch them.

On a wider scale, always had a soft spot for Norwich - great ground, great kits and a passionate support being stuck right out there on their own. If they’re not competing with us I always like to see Plymouth do well too.
Of course, some of us are old enough to remember when Aylesbury famously played England, https://www.bbc.co.uk/videos/cn005egv04xo with your man Hercules having a good game.

Yeah, then England went to a major championships and stank the place out. Who would have thought that playing Aylesbury United as a warm up would prove to be next to useless when you face the 1988 Netherlands side...

The friendly match v Us was the game when Richard Hill got done byba terrible tackle which finished his pro career ...
Aylesbury playing home matches at the closest non league ground to me Beaconsfield from this season ..well Flackwell Heath just about walkable as well .

Over the years I have admired certain teams and developed a soft spot. But then realised that it is transitory.
Leeds in the early 70s, outstanding talent in every position. Then realised that their fans were thugs. Realised that it was the players I admired, not the club.
Forest in the Clough years - unbelievable achievement by Clough and Taylor in achieving First Division honours with two (TWO) clubs who had done b****r all before and nothing since. Then two (Two) European Cups. Then realised that it was Clough and Taylor that I admired.
Liverpool, briefly, because they were Kings of Europe, and Man Utd weren't. Then the bin divers got the U's banned from Europe.
Headington United, my Dad took me there when I was a Lad, never really forgotten them. Sort of loved them ever since, through thick and thin.
Managers come and go, players come and go, shareholders come and go.
Don't know why, but that's true love.🤷‍♂️

It sure is a crazy situation and typical of the s**t councils that have turned Aylesbury into a congested s**t hole.
I was an Aylesbury boy and at my first job after leaving school the Manager there, Charlie Stubbings, was the chairman of Aylesbury Utd when they were in their previous ground on the Wendover Rd.
He bought the floodlights for it from Old Trafford when Man U upgraded them.

Man U??

Sunderland because of my Grandad (only football liking member of my family somehow)

Cowdenbeath, picked them when playing CM95/96 because I liked the name (it has Cow in and almost beef - to an 8 year old that's hilarious)

But of course, neither of them matter in any way really - OTID

York City - York is where I grew up from before I was 2 until early 20s. Parents still there. A number of my best mates are York season ticket holders and I spent many Saturday's at Bootham Crescent especially during the later teenage years. Some silly away days over time as well.

Hull City - Uni city so have the natural attachment that most people get. Got a lot of opportunities to get media access to the football club whilst living up there too.

Derby County - home for the last 10 years and my wife and in-laws are supporters with a number of long term season tickets so I have spent a lot of time at Pride Park (not when we've been in the same league though)

Viktoria Köln - my stag do took in a game and just loved the day out, we were treated so well by their fans who couldn't believe we'd chosen a game of theirs to attend. Invited back to their little supporters bar in the estate, they put food on for us and just generally a brilliant day.

That stag must have been great - Koln perfect choice

It was immense other than the size too small Scum kit I was made to wear for the duration of the football day. Ended up in goal with their youth team hitting shots at me and then forced to have photos with some of the Viktoria team after the game.

Koln great city. Intend to go back to take it in properly

I occasionally look out for how Maritimo do in the Portuguese League. I was on holiday in Madeira a few years ago and discovered their ground was only a mile or so away from where we were staying so me and my son took in a EL tie I think it was - some European game anyway - and they won 2-0. Nice little ground, probably held about 12,000. It was without doubt the cleanest stadium I've ever set foot in, no litter anywhere to be seen and the loos were like that of a 5 star hotel. Literally everyone was in club colours of some sort and on the way out in the concourses a woman saw we obviously weren't and wrapped her scarf around my son, a nice touch. I think Swansea got their new manager from Maritimo.

Oxford City - as a lad used to go to the White House ground until introduced to the noise at the Manor

Raith Rovers - used to watch them as a child during my school holidays with family

Watford - were my school subbuteo team as my best made has Oxford already. Chosen probably cos they were yellow too. Seemed to focus on detail rather than being any good at it , Ray Train was shortened, Ross Jenkins was made taller (with Trains chopped off legs), Luther Blissett painted black as was Keith Cassells

Portsmouth – probably the best away ground I’ve been to. A proper old-school football ground with a great atmosphere.

Pisa, Italy – watched them play in Serie B. Fantastic ground, with the Leaning Tower visible in the background. Their fans were brilliant as well.

Almería, Spain – saw them play in La Liga. Lovely ground, and I really liked their kit too.

Union Berlin, Germany – watched them when they were still in the second tier. Lovely little ground with loads of character, and it generates a really good atmosphere.

I think this is from collecting the sticker albums in the 90’s and their club badge stuck with me.

Also Newport County since I used to live near there and went to uni on the other side of the river.

Yeah, probably. But they're both sides with proud anti-fascist histories
Ah. "Anti fascist"
Code for performative virtue signallers to use football as a vehicle to spread far left politics 😂

I find all those ultra left wing clubs like St Pauli cringe. Similarly cringe when ultras make a big deal out of right wing leanings like Lazio.

Pray to god it doesn't become a big thing here.

No. Anti-Fascist is code for anti-fascist. Opposing racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, etc. You ought to try it sometime.

It's a pointless phrase which is like a club claiming to be "anti murder"

But whatever makes you feel good bro.

Tbf your post was kinda bait so you could try and have an argument with someone bro
It's all good.
I'm proud Oxford United fans are proudly anti-communist and anti-queuing-at-pubs. I have a soft spot for other clubs that follow our ideology!
