Our match v Chelsea going to a replay arguably stopped our club from going under. That atrocious refereeing decision and Frank Leboeuf saved our club. Under the current rules, we would have gone bust.Yes it is too steep but having said that I do understand why they are trying to cash in. The biggest issue is the concession tickets which are far too high.
The FA created this though when they scrapped replays. The FA cup is the biggest cup competition in this country and is so important to lower league clubs from a financial point of view. Scrapping replays can potentially cost lower league clubs 1000’s of pounds which can keep a club a float for a few years. The money they miss out can mean a local community will miss out on better facilities that they can use. A lot of lower league clubs now have 3G pitches which they then rent out for community use. A replay in the FA cup will fund the up keep of that pitch for a couple more years.
I was working Saturday night in Tamworth (28 Dec), I was chatting to couple of lads I know who are from Tamworth, (who go and support their local team semi regularly albeit not every game, as walk ups. Theres quite a bit of unrest and resentment in Tamworth towards the clubs Owners/ board. Theyre both very doubtful that they'll get terrace tickets( at £38 ) when they eventually go on general sale as they reckon there will, at best, only be a handful of the just under 5k capacity left* when it reaches that stage . Both of them made a couple of valid ( IMO) observations - its highly unlikely Spurs will field a full strength side,so charging £38 to watch, in the main PL squad players, is far too much, (its more or less double the cost of a league game). Given the game is being televised, (a sizable wad of TV £ will be going in the coffers), as well as huge sales of club merch ( shirts, scarves etc), blatantly milking the demand for a one off game by doubling ( in effect) ticket prices as well as allowing people who rarely, in some cases never , go to Tamworth games, to have 'priority' over those who go to most home games. Apparently some of the sponsors & VIPs have been taking the P**s by requesting/reserving large amounts of ( granted paid for) tickets for their guests prior to them going on sale (29th Dec). While ST holders and Supporters club members are limited to just one ticket each when their option to buy opens ( 30th Dec)
*around 5k Minus away allocation, as well as the TV coverage will likely occupy space and reduce the amount of tickets available for home supporters too
Whether what they said regarding Sponsors/ VIps 'reserving' guest tickets is entirely true or speculation I dont know, but they're both a rather bitter about the pricing, and the way tickets are going on sale. Maybe, if they do manage to buy tickets for the fa cup game they'll be happier than they were on Saturday night?
I think its excessive for ticket prices, for a televised one off FA cup match - its a huge game so of course you'd expect an increase on league match tickets but more or less double , IMO its taking the P**s.
it has always happened at some non-league teams, there was uproar back in the 80s when Aldershot hiked the prices for our cup game - £13, which compares to £8.50 for a Cuckoo Lane seat in our 1st season in Div 1.Yes it is too steep but having said that I do understand why they are trying to cash in. Burton got a replay at Man United in the third round in 2005/06. That arguably set them up financially for promotion as Champions from the Conference in 2008/09. I still find it hard to believe they had back to back promotions from L2 and L1, spent two years in the Championship, and are only this season struggling in L1.it has always happened at some non-league teams, there was uproar back in the 80s when Aldershot hiked the prices for our cup game - £13, which compares to £8.50 for a Cuckoo Lane seat in our 1st season in Div 1.
Scrapping replays can cost clubs a lot of money, the money (£1m+) from 2 games v Man Utd saved Exeter from going under a few years ago, and kept them fan owned.
.......and then Aldridge said cheerio. A sad day all round.Things have moved on a lot since Aldershot tried to cash on with their FA Cup tie against us in '87 with a shocking (for then) £13 a ticket...
