Eastwood: 6 - Kicking was pretty good, possibly should have done better for the goal, come and punched it maybe? Didn’t have a huge amount of saves to make

Hanson: 5 - Gave the ball away for their goal. Looked scared of McGeady. Got better as the game went on. One great cross to set up a headed chance.

Nelson: 7 - Won everything in the air

Dickie: 6 - Looks nervous on the ball at times and does a lot of shirt pulling

Ruffles: 7 - Solid, I didn’t notice too much of him

Mousinho: 7 - Battled well, rallied the troops. Maybe unlucky to be booked. Harangued the ref, which I like in a game like that

Brannigan: 8 - Energy, commitment, drive, maybe his passing was a little off

Henry: 5 - Disappointing for me, made a lot of errors, looked off the pace

Graham: 9 - They couldn’t live with him, beat his man with ease, never gave up, just lacking that final ball at times, but put some very good ones in

Mackie: 6 - Battled hard without actually doing much

Whyte: 9 - So much pace, our game plan for large parts was just give him the ball. If he made better decisions who knows what might have happened

Subs

Sinclair: 7 - Worked hard, didn’t win much in the air but did very well for the goal, which seeing back I don’t think was a foul

Browne: 7 - Didn’t have much time, right place right time

Carruthers: 7 - Looks classy, I’d like to see him start

Hanson was at least a 7. Went for a Hollywood pass which set up the attack which won them the corner they scored from. Only error he had all game imo

Harsh on Dickie - I thought he was better than a 6. He made some excellent headed clearances and was pretty solid throughout.

The only thing Nelson didn't win in the air was the header for their goal - he didn't even get off the ground. I think if you are going to take Hanson down to a five for a misplaced pass that eventually lead to a corner that lead to a goal then I think you have to dock Nelson a bit as well! (Although in general I am not that happy with Hanson at RB)

I would mark Mackie down to a 5. Missed an easy headed chance and was generally fairly useless!! You could give him a 10 for constantly arguing with the defenders and officials almost prompting a red card. Would have subbed him much earlier.

Bit harsh to say he missed, the goalkeeper was going the wrong way and adjusted to make a great save - nine times out of ten, that's a goal.

Yes it was a better save than I realised when watching it back. Felt like Mackie has spurned an easy chance live but on reflection he did as much as you could have asked really.

I still say he should have scored. A good striker would have with only the keeper to beat. If he headed that down in either corner its a goal, he made it an easier save for the keeper than it should have been.

Maybe it hit a bumpy bit of the bandage he was wearing [emoji23]

It was certainly a good chance. But he got a decent header on target and the keeper has made a very good save. Likewise, his save from Dickie in the first half showed that he clearly is decent between the sticks.

He also made a decent save from the Ruffels header and from the Henry flick in the second half.

5 is harsh on Hanson. He’s is being made a bit of a scapegoat I feel due to his price tag.

Would start Carruthers over Henry next week also. Henry has probably been our best player this season, however he does look tired and Carruthers oozes class.

I did wonder when someone would use the scapegoat word. It is always the way for the weakest link in the team.

As quite a few have said, Hanson was alright yesterday, but he isn't a good full back (or a midfielder apparently) at this level.

The thing is, both our full backs are utility players really not specialists in that position and at times it shows. Ruffs also gets caught out of position and makes the odd mistake at times. Both are doing a steady job but next season we'll need natural full backs if we want to progress.

Totally agree.
Hanson played against one of the best wide men in the league.
Hanson had a good game in my view..
Nobody really had a poor game (Henry probably was playing at a level lower than he normally produces)

Has kept Sunderland in it all season. Mackie did everything right with his header. It was just a very good save

How many chances did Sunderland have. How many attempts did Grigg and Wyke have? A pretty expensive forward line! Tough to criticise the defence. Hanson is perfectly fine at RB. Nothing amazing but is better on the ball than Ruffels

He is competent. He did completely miss a ball and/or tackle against Barnsley that lead directly to their goal the other week and but for a acrobatic interception (in which he overstretched and seemed to tweak something) yesterday he would have got caught out again. I think both cases were because his positioning can be very suspect - Sunderland rather played into our hands (IMO of course) by playing quite a lot of rather hopeful long diagonal balls into the corners where Hanson's pace could help him get in position while the ball was on it's way. They looked far more dangerous when they actually passed the ball about. So I think he was better yesterday and he was successful with that interception. I hope he continues to improve and that yesterday's performance is a sign of what is to come.
Grigg was very poor I thought, and Wyke was more intent on the physical stuff than actually playing the ball. Sunderland got more than they deserved out of the game.

I predict Hanson will do very well for us in the long term. Feel free to bookmark ?

Yes, was thinking the same. Henry needs a rest and Carruthers needs game time.
