If he stays in League 1 that’s a pretty good move to be fair. They’re certainly going for it.
I would think that means we have doubts he can step up to the Championship. If we thought he was good enough, we'd have gone straight in with an offer. I thought he was pretty decent, but- like a few other- not sure he's Championship standard. If he does sign for Rotherham, that's an excellent L1 squad Evans is building. Say what you like about him, but he knows how to get teams promoted. He's a much larger version of Neil Warnock.

Yeah, throwing an absolute shedload of cash at it generally works.

I can't believe I'm defending Steve Evans, but he does have a brilliant lower league record. Stevenage have a budget of about 50p, and he took them from the bottom of L2 to top half L1 in about 18 months...
Stevenage weren't as plucky as they'd like to make out this season just finished. They were paying some sizable wages to get some of those players in and then had to squad fill with older players and risks.

If we manage to get a fee for him, that’s an excellent bit of business. The piece doesn’t mention?

Always really liked the idea of him as a physical but technical CM, but in practice that never really transpired. Thought he looked reasonably good as the RCB in a three, but not enough to suggest he had a long term future with us.

For a young midfielder that couldn't get into a League One squad (other than when we had an injury crisis)? If we get a fee, it won't be anything that moves the needle.

You'd hope, though, that we might try and stick a sell-on clause in there. Just in case we've got it wrong.

By now clubs employing Evans know what they are getting, anyone going to Rotherham knows what they are getting as well so it’s a pretty perfect match really, they would be in any acca I do for promoted teams next season.

In fact with Birmingham City seeming minted, Rotherham putting together a league one promotion/Championship relegation dream team that doesn’t leave a lot for the others to fight over, you would fancy Bolton and Plymouth to both get in the play offs again so thank f**k we are not down there next season, happy to see the rest of them scrap it out.

As an aside Plymouth are in the Championship. As well as Birmingham and Rotherham, Huddersfield were relegated.

Rotherham know what they're getting as he was there previously.

Nobody would have have had Pompey going up automatically last year and Birmingham could do a Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday, Derby.
I know that people were suggesting that L1 wouod be a lot stronger next season, but suspect that Barnsley, Blackpool Bolton could be weaker.

Presuming you meant Peterborough, yeah that does look a strong quartet looking to go up. Glad we made it this season 😁

I think Bolton will be strong again. And you have the wild card of Wrexham as well who will have money to splash around.

Sure and Stockport have money and were better than Wrexham.
Peterborough will very likely be weaker ( they could lose a number of their better players).
Charlton and Reading are interesting. I am not as convinced as some by Charlton ( Jones did OK but hardly suggested that they will tear the league up next season- they will presumably spend quite big), and Reading still seem in financial trouble?

The reason League One was weak last year was that you would usually expect the relegated Championship clubs to be big contenders - but two out of the three were financial basket cases with points deductions who did not compete. And Blackpool never really got going either.

Won't be the case this year - Rotherham are clearly going to be good; Birmingham have tons of money, and I think Huddersfield will be competent too if they can keep even a reasonable subset of their squad together. Add in moneybags Wrexham coming up from League Two, and the usual suspects and it's going to be a tough league!

Without doubt Fatty Evans is an absolute t**t as a person and Raynor is no better but as a managing partnership they’re good and I can see them bringing Rotherham back to the championship next season l.

Yes I agree with a lot of that
I am just not sure how good Birmingham and Huddersfield will be. Many have come down with money and spent a while in the Division before going back up.
I think that Peterborough, Barnsley and Blackpool could be less strong.
Wrexham and Stockport could do very well, but let's see. Wrexham's model ( buying players from a much higher level and financially blowing most of the opposition out of the water), will have to be changed I assume.
The league in all likelihood will be stronger, but it remains to be seen how good it will be.

Some have - others have come down, kept their squads intact, been way too good for the division and gone straight back up. In particular, I'm thinking Hull in 2019/20, and Blackburn & Wigan (the first time) in 2017/18. It all depends how well they are managed, I guess.

Anyway, we shall see.

Still reckon 2021/22 was the strongest League One has ever been - that was the year we got 76 points with a GD of +23 (so very similar to this year, which was 77/+23), but finished 8th and missed the playoffs by seven points! If the teams with resources are managed competently next year, it could be the same story.
