my school of thought is we should be solving for two things 1) squad that can keep us in the championship 2) squad that can challenge to get us right back up if we come down

For me Beadle would be best bet for 1) but Cummings would be best best for 2) as he’d be our player, should develop with a years Championship experience under his belt.

I think our signings will show us how the owners are setting us up for 1) or for 2) or a balance of both (1.5?)
I can't see the owners not trying to stay up.
Having said that, they would be naive to not cover themselves for if we did go down.
Loans will be very important and if course at the end of the season these will normally return to their parent club.
Does anybody know whether there us a relegation clause in players contracts ( I assume that thete would be for a number of the players?)

If we were to bring Cumming back in, for me it'd be as backup with a view to him challenging whoever we bring in as number one. This would also mean moving McGinty on and making Eastwood the third choice at best.

Goalkeeper is a position that we have to get right, and in truth is probably easiest to bring in a quality player for, because how many opportunities are there for goalkeepers at a senior level such as this?

The promise of starting football would be difficult for most goalkeepers of the quality we require to turn down.

I felt Cunming came of age since the drubbing by Bolton and some of those saves against the posh were immense and I would definitely sign him as he is in a free whether that would be 1st choice or 2nd choice now that’s another thing

Agreed, regular football and an understanding with his defence (and a game plan) and he has shown what a good keeper he is.

There's no way Cumming would sign for us as back up, he'd want to be No1.

He had a dodgy start with us, but finished the season very well, but is he good enough to be first choice in the Championship? I'm not sure.

He's a bit lightweight, we could do with a unit really.

Yep agree with most of that, and perhaps if I was to be a little critical. I don’t think he was commanding enough, and vocal enough.

He was solid for us, once he settled in.

There are better goalkeepers out there, but it’s obviously up to the recruitment team, and what Des feels is right.

I’m not sure how accurate transfermakt is but there’s one or two keepers on the ‘out of contract’ list this summer that look interesting

Remi Matthews (30) Crystal Palace
Jack Walton (31) Luton Town
Adam Davies (26) Sheff United

Or if we’re looking for younger keepers with potential :

Joseph Anang (23) West Ham
Jordan Amissah (22) Sheff United

Wes Foderingham? always thought he was good.
He is ok but prob go to a Prem team to be a backup.

Plenty of good young gk's out there we can get on loan or sign if that is what we choose to do:

Mio Backhaus-Werder Bremen
Sol Brenn-Mboro
Arthur Okonkwo-League Two keeper of the year at Wrexham and is a free agent I believe. Though sure they will try to lure him back.

I’ll just drop a name here and then retreat quickly, waiting for the venomous disgust…..

Matt Richie released by Newcastle today.

Based on Ferguson’s quote, seems like we will be going down the Leonard road acquiring our own assets and supplementing with some high end loans.

Players like Leonard that have been on loan and don’t appear to have a future at their club.

Maybe someone like Troy Parrott, Malcolm Ebiowei etc. Also the possibility to look at those previously linked like Longman or Isaac Davies.

A-miss-ahhhh A-save-ahhh it’s all the same to me.

Isaac Davies would be a fantastic signing after the season he's had.

Seen many Ex-Players mentioned for a return this summer, one name which I don’t think has been mentioned yet is Kemar Roofe. He will likely be out of contract with Rangers at the end of the month and could look for a return down south? He has just returned from a hip operation, after only playing 98 games in 4 years at Rangers. It would be a massive risk, and with our history of signing injury prone players which don’t work out, it probably isn’t the best option. However you can’t help but feel if he got a run of games when fit, he would be pretty handy. Understandably I imagine the response to this will be pretty negative, but I thought it was worth a mention nonetheless.

Somebody else has got his magic hat now.
