There's a middle ground where factors such as the transfer embargo and coming up through the playoffs, coupled with the fact that we were stone dead favourites to go straight back down almost certainly humstrung our summer recruitment.

At the same time a few mistakes were certainly made, it's whether or not we panicked and signed players because we needed numbers or whether Waldron's judgement was bad.

I expect players to improve as they've had time to settle, I'm sure we'll see more from Ter-Avest (who I thought was decent this season anyway) and hopeful we can get more from Romney.

Waldron is not God, I'm sure if the guy who Leeds took from us was still here then our recruitment would have had less mistakes, but I think Ed is clearly competent and the more established we become, the better the recruitment will become. We needed an overhaul last summer but now we can be more selective.
Thought it was Derby who took our recruitment fella

We have a choice of paying him 40-50-60% of his wages and letting him play elsewhere, or 100% of his wages not to play for us.

Why p**s away a couple of hundred thousand from our budget just to play hardball?
As I said in my post I’ve no idea on figures and what proportion is paid by whom, so if what you have said is correct (how do you know and are you sure by the way?), then if we are paying 40-50% still that’s certainly more acceptable than 80-90% which is what I’m sure I read was happening in year one at Kilmarnock. Anything above 50% is completely unacceptable in my book.

I still think there’s ground in early June to be more hardball with any club trying to take a player on loan now, though assume they start paying his wages early rather than if it’s August. I just think the whole Findlay saga has been a total p*ss take which is why it makes me so annoyed about the whole saga of the last few seasons.

I’d also love to know as a comparison how much of Dane Scarlett, Ben Nelson or other players we take on loan we pay.

No one will deny that the Stuart Findlay signing hasn't been a complete failure. But you dont compound this failure by forcing him to stay here and paying 100% of his wages for him not to play.

My understanding is that Kilmarnock were paying 40% of his wages in the first season, but agreed to pay slightly more last season with an early deal done.

There are always gambles with these things, and we have got more if we'd held out longer, but its more likely that we'd have got less or be left with him on the book but not playing.

As for loans coming in, I believe that we paid around 50% of the wages of Scarlett and Nelson, and around 60% of Matos.

I wouldn’t entertain any offer for him unless it was stupid money, but also when it comes to the end of his current contract I wouldn’t be throwing massive money at him either.

He’s been a club legend but there will be a time where his spot in the side isn’t guaranteed if we continue to play in the championship
I think he can be really valuable even if he isn't playing regularly. Others will know more but if he is interesting in getting his badges then bringing him into the coaching set up at the end of his career would be a no-brainer. Here is a guy who is steeped in the culture of the club and has a desire to win that others can learn from. We don't need think like this just yet but players like Cam and Vaulks have huge value post-playing career. With that in mind I would keep him

Absolutely, not disputing that at all. We should always be looking to improve mind you as that’s how you evolve as a football club.

Like you say, he’s part of the fabric of the club, so let’s hope he does become a coach after his playing days are finished

One of my failures as a fan is a (non-amorous) romantic attachment to players though. I would be terrible at letting players go. I'd probably still be playing James Constable in the hope he'd bag those two more goals.

Why wou;d they not just pay a fee now then? Plus what if they pulled out? We would be stuck with him going out on loan to Kilmarnock for a pittance again.
Maybe financial regs.
If it's written in the deal you can't. Look at Chelsea Sancho the deal says 25mil or 5 million to not do it so they are paying the 5

What financial regs? I don’t think Oxford and Hearts will be doing those sort of deals, neither club are at that level.

I think the most likely thing is that the who/whatever wrote the article didn’t know Findlays contract was up at the end of this season.

In other words he was probably loaned cheap on the basis they signed him for £25m or whatever the agreed price was. The £5m just reflects the balance of the loan fee (without buying)

See someone mentioned Jack Henry Francis the other day, had a good loan at Sligo.
And has the ability to step up, would be a decent young project to bring through.

I think we all do mate 🤣.

I guess as I get older I realise that life moves on and the same is said for football 🤣

I know Sidibe is a lot younger than Goodrham but if Stoke are getting 20 million for him and Ty is way better then we'd be mad to accept anything under 10
£10m+ if he’s going for that. We shouldn’t be bullied these days into accepting inadequate fees for players.

Cough up or find someone else.

Haven’t we got a new head of recruitment now? Someone from Wycombe. I thought Ed had moved to a slightly different role.

Edit: Just seen your previous post Brahma!
Yeah like he's the overall development boss - the other bloke helps with all the stats legwork I suspect

Much as I wouldn’t want Tyler leaving Oxford, the decision might be down to the club and him. He has always wanted to play at the top, level so if a club aspiring at the top of the championship comes in for him that might well seal it. He has to be our most saleable player at around £7million.

I’ve mentioned this kind of signing multiple times on the transfer threads. Given the squad cap limits nowadays I really think this could be the best approach, get some of the best young talent we can and give them a platform to develop while hopefully taking themselves and the club to the next level. Add in a decent amount of Rowett style seasoned pros who know what it takes at this level and that for me should be the approach this window.

Well if he’s any good. At least he looks like a sturdy youth.
