As. I’ve already mentioned GR has a big headache regarding outgoings and incomings ! Who will make the grade to play championship football in 25/26 season? We can speculate till the cows come home but remember all our players that have been out on loan we have had to pay part of there salary which can be costly. As for COD , memories, local lad I get it but being sentimental don’t cut it with me , it’s now time to be level headed but ruthless if not we will be back down a division, my opinion for what it’s worth!

Why sell Currie

Not sure if people realise but we may need income to help build. We might need income to pay off crap contracts. We may need income to help profit and sustainability.

I'm not trying to throw bombs around for a reaction.

Why replace our top joint scorer with a L1 left back who is unlikely to return a similar goal haul?

The club has so much to do, in and out.

Personally I'd sell Tyler but it's ok to sell and reinvest, particularly in a wider squad context

Yes, I’d sell Tyler too. If his stock is as high as the rumoured £8m then that’s a no brainer. Big potential but that’s all it is right now, after his underwhelming season I don’t think he comes with any guarantees that he rips up the Championship any time soon. Although his numbers weren’t bad I think those of us who saw him week in, week out, could see that it was a struggle for him for large parts of last season.

Hope we don’t make a move for COD. He has been an average player at this level for a few seasons but there’s a reason Cardiff have been relegated. It would show we’re fishing in the same pond as last summer - looking for cast-offs, players the wrong side of 28 with a bad injury or two behind them, and released players from teams who had struggled.

We need players with potential and resale value with a point to prove. The squad is heavy with fringe players already and we don’t need another.

I also remember this. It was carnage that day if I remember correctly. We needed to win to have any chance of reaching the playoffs. Northwich took the lead, we equalised through Beano and then went behind shortly after to lose the game. There were several pitch invasions, many just people running from the East Stand the full length of the pitch and bolting over the fence. Then one bigger one when we equalised.

That kind of ending probably summed up our season, we were awful for the most part, Wilder came in and we were on a great run of form towards the back end of the season, he gave us all belief, then we missed out on the last day, when we would have been in the playoffs had it not been for the 5 points deduction for failing to fax the correct paperwork for Eddie Hutchinson! It was the rollercoaster of all rollercoasters.
As an aside, the error wouldn’t have occurred at all if Eddie Hutchinson hadn’t been de-registered, in an attempt to force him out. It was a stupid, old-school bullying tactic that backfired horrendously. Even if there was no intention of using him, there was no need for his registration to be actively removed. The club threw a stinger in front of its own wheels and drove over it. Think it’s always been gravely unfair that the whole thing was pinned on Mick Brown and reduced to a dodgy fax.

That’s the second or third time I have seen someone use average player at this level against a potential signing, while we should obviously be trying to find players with a higher ceiling they are very hard to come by, given where we have been, the quality of our team and where we finished last season is an average championship player not a step up? How many players do we currently have who even fit that description?

If we had 11 average championship players we should, on average, finish 12th, which would be a good season for us.

Never heard that before, who wanted him de-registered? Was it because of ability or a falling out?

Was openly reported at the time. Patterson took his registration away while trying to force him out, then he was needed due to injuries, and that’s when the whole thing blew up.

Don’t want to post a link to that website, so here’s a screen grab of the report from Mark Edwards at the time:

Cheers, other than the points deduction part and the fax I didn’t remember any of that, but it was 20 years ago and in my prime drinking years.

Yes there is a reason Cardiff were relegated but that reason was not COD. This belief that you can’t cherry pick the better players from relegated sides is simply baffling.

I'd have no problem with COD coming back in terms of how he left - he was young, probably not very well advised.....so be it. Water under the bridge.

I'm just not entirely sure he's what we need. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that what he offers is probably what we need the least right now!

He's 30 now, and while he's still clearly sharp - I'm not sure he's got the pace still to be a Championship level winger, does he? Maybe in a team that plays slower possession-football. But in a team that prefers to soak up pressure and break quickly (as we will surely still be doing against the better sides next year), I'm not sure he's that sort of winger any more is he?

No doubt he can play a quality Championship left back or wing back still. But we already have two of those.
Largely agree with all of this, but to answer the slightly rhetorical question… it’d depend on the rest of the team.

O’Dowda doesn’t have the pace and power of a Mustapha Bundu for example, but he’d provide natural width, decent delivery and allow Leigh/Currie to get forward without leaving us exposed. Get the attacking midfielder and right winger profiles right, and the jigsaw pieces could fit together nicely.

I do think of him as more of an LB/LWB these days though so would seem a slightly strange one in that respect. Equally it’s such a competitive market and so any proven championship quality player we might have an edge in the race to sign is going to be of some interest.

We likely will be fishing in a similar pond to last year. We will again be one of the teams favoured to go down, and we have to manage accordingly

I think COD is a fair bit quicker than Bundu

Im seeing some rather odd opinions regarding the COD signing, so for the sake of objectivity, let’s pretend that he never played for us.

- He’s a versatile player that is capable of playing any position down the left hand side.
- Vastly experienced at this level. 250+ appearances in 9 seasons.
- He’s played all of his football at this level for 2 clubs that are, or were in Cardiff’s case, well established in this division.
- He has just turned 30, so he is by no means finished at this level.
- He has been one of Cardiffs best players in recent seasons.
- Tore our full backs a new one in both games this season and was by far their best player.

People need to get a grip. What happened with him, happened nearly a decade ago! If you told me at the age of 21 that I could go and play in one of the best leagues in Europe and quadruple my salary, I would have done the very same and so would all of you! He doesn’t owe you, or the club, a damn thing! At the end of the day, it’s his job..

This signing is exactly the type of signing that we need to make in order to become established at this level!

I for one, will be welcoming him back with open arms! This isn’t a redemption tour for him, it’s a homecoming!

COD would probably come back, he was one of Cardiff's best players. For me it would depend on his demands. I don't like long contracts for players 'not on the up' so to speak. Solid player.

Without wading into the CO'D debate itself (to sign or not to sign), I am certainly enjoying the increasing hype around his solid (if unspectacular) performance against us last month.

He looked tidy. And certainly had the beating of top Championship wing-back *checks notes* Przemysław Płacheta.

Seriously. He showed some quality. But give it another 48 hours on this thread and that performance will be lauded as one of the outstanding left-sided performances of his generation.

Alternatively people might just be saying *check notes* that he has been a solid Championship player for a decade and put in two strong performances against us.

You have a strange tendency to exaggerate what the vast majority say to then mock that false narrative.

I too would welcome him back, providing we do not need to pay too much for him. He has proved to be a quality Championship player, and at Cardiff he did seem to go out of his way to appease our fans. Be happy with his signing, but only at a totally realistic cost, otherwise spend the money on a younger player.

I don’t know this for certain, but I can imagine he has a relegation release clause in his deal. If that is the case, I can’t see him costing us any more than 500k. For me, that’s a good deal. A 2 year deal with a club option of an additional year would suit both parties. Hope it happens!

If you checked your notes then you’d see that Shemmy was meant to be playing RW that game. So he had Shemmy dropping deep and also got the better of Kioso, taking two of our players out of the game. It’s a key reason why Cardiff were better than us in that game.

I don’t think anyone is painting him as the second coming of Christ, but he’s a good option that ticks a lot of boxes and is an upgrade on what we currently have on the left wing

For anyone who watched the play off game…how did Ethan Galbraith and Jamie Donley look? Upgrade on what we currently have?

Not sure how much the latter would cost, but has the advantage of being U21 for the squad limits.
Bit of a late response, but it was a good scouting game.

Both Currie and Galbraith were good on the day, in a dour performance. Donley disappointing for me, set piece delivery was poor. Also thought Thierry Small was only ok, and Currie wasn't troubled by him greatly.
