That would be a problem then.

Shame. Probably the most talented player in A-League right now.

I thought that, under the new rules, we were allowed to sign up to four players now who wouldn't previously have qualified for a work permit under the points system?

Don't see how we could have signed Ter Avest or Romeny any other way.......Dutch league isn't ranked that highly, and neither of them were internationals at the time.

I thought that was the rule also, it certainly is on football manager. 🤣

The Dutch Eredivisie is in Band 2 of the 6 available for assigning a GBE/work permit. Higher than Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and even the MLS.
Australia is in Band 5.

What "ESC players" are and that we are allowed 4 of them I don't know, but it appears to be some sort of exemption provided they will make a "positive contribution" among others, whatever that means.

While I understand what you are saying, I really don't believe for an instant that a player's agent doesn't make it crystal clear when talking to an interested club exactly how long their client has left on their contract, whether there is an extension clause etc, as it would make a huge difference to what a club was prepared to offer/pay and whether there was any point in pursuing that player. I can see that there might be some (minimal) advantage in supporters not putting pressure on a club to extend/end/sign a player's contract, but I suspect that in the real world, it is *only* the supporters that don't have this information.
Fair point. Agents have certainly changed the balance of power. (For good or bad -discuss).
Like you I don't think that supporters pressure counts for much. Whether a player stays or goes will be a commercial decision.
In business generally you treat commercial information as confidential. And with players there may be legal or contractual restrictions on what can be made public. Some clubs are PLCs, so that raises some issues.
But, yes, it doesn't seem to bother big clubs, or their players, or especially their agents from discussing sensitive matters with the media.

If you remember there were a few advocates for Longstaff on this forum, but as you say he looked very limited outside of actual finishing, which gets harder and harder as you move up through the leagues. Even Mullin at Wrexham seemed to come to a grinding halt after his Conference and League Two exploits
Yup. I’m no scout, but it wasn’t hard to see why most of the bigger L1 clubs had a look at him and passed. I was very surprised when Millwall took him on. He reminds me quite a lot of Cole Stockton. Can hit a ball and finish. But lazy movement and limited pace. And as you say, the further up the ladder you go, the more those limitations are exposed.

The battle to be our left back next season will be exciting. Greg Leigh & Jack Currie battling it out. It’s exactly what you want in every position.

Expect Joe Bennett to move on, who’s been a great servant for us.
And picked up when he didn’t have a club. That’s incredible looking back.

He only joined on a short term deal too, before extending his contract in the January.

Commendable that he kept himself fit from May to November, then played a key role in getting us promoted (and was excellent at Wembley), before playing some important games for us in the Championship.

There must have been times in autumn 2023 when he might have thought his playing career was over.

Yes we essentially have a maximum of 4 ESC spaces in the squad for players that otherwise wouldn’t make the GBE requirements. The GBE requirements are based on the league, percentage of minutes played and if the player is an international (along with other things).

We have a sliding scale of ESC spaces based on the percentage of total minutes we provided to English players in the previous season.

I haven’t checked but I imagine we will qualify for 4 ESC spaces.

Players that are signed to ESC spaces can become non-ESC in time if they subsequently meet the GBE criteria of play >% of available minutes in a 12 month period.

What’s an ESC?

What’s an ESC?

Elite Significant Contribution Player.

Previously, post brexit, players signed from outside the UK had to meet Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) criteria (a scoring system up to 15 points).

Clubs, agents etc spoke against GBE as players could not be signed. As such, some markets were totally inaccessible for EFL clubs.

The work around is having limited ESC spaces that allow clubs to sign players that otherwise wouldn’t meet the GBE criteria

Thanks for the answer and explanation.

The more players we use that are eligible for England means more ESC slots. So play more home grown players and you get rewarded with additional space for players who don’t meet GBE criteria.

And then another 1 year last summer. Interesting isnt it? A few pages back, there was some comments about getting players in their 30's and what a waste of money, squad spot, etc it was.

Joe Bennett is a perfect example of how vital experience is. He wasn't match fit, was unwanted, pro career looked over and then gets 18 months with us, promotion and Championship football again (plus a lengthy injury in there).

But 2 years later finds himself in possibly a stronger position than before. Essentially he has extended his career by at least 2 years (I suspect more)

The Indonesian RB put in a MOTM performance 😂

The two players I wanted from this side were El Azzouni and Van Den Berg.

Eliano Reijnders also can play as midfielder / winger. His price is also affordable for us and worth to try.

His goal last night on away match to Willem II, when he scored looks like in winger role, not in RB mode.

Hope can see his best contribution for Indonesia last 2 WCQ matches ( China and Japan ). He can be play as starter when meet China, option for replacing Lino who will absent because 2 yellow cards accumulated.
