I’m sure after spaffing out £1.6 on Romeney, who is woeful at this level, I expect Gary Rowett is now in a better position to politely say “p**s off “ to the owners when recruiting players he wants rather than any Indonesians who they want
Firstly, it was 7 figures, not 1.6 million. Secondly, he isn't 'woeful' at this level, he has struggled to get up to speed, but has still shown flashes of being one of our best technical players. Against Coventry, he was comfortably our best player for example. And finally, if the owners want to spend their money on someone, Rowett has no say on if they do or not.

This is the sort of nonsense that was spouted about Josh Murphy.

The guy has been here for 6 months, I think we need to give the kid a chance to get his feet under the table before writing him off myself.

Great little player on his day but he comes with absolutely no guarantees he makes it at Championship level.
I'd argue that he's already "made it" in the Championship, if you take into account his age, his first experience at this level, and playing in a team that struggled offensively.

9 goal contributions is not to be sniffed at. That is on a level with Callum O'Hara who is a game away from the PL, and more than Jobe Bellingham who is in the team of the season and touted with 8 figure deals across the PL and abroad.

Yes his form dropped, and I suspect that he was affected as much by the change of manager and systems we were playing as much as any changes in his home life. But he came back stronger and proved that he can compete at this level.

If Tyler was a player elsewhere we'd be saying what an incredible talent he is. But for some reason, some are determined to run down our players and our club given every opportunity which is frankly bizarre.

If we got an offer of anything remotely close to £5m for Tyler then we have to take it. Great little player on his day but he comes with absolutely no guarantees he makes it at Championship level, he really struggled last season although in fairness he finished the season looking a bit more like his old self. We can’t be all sentimental just because he comes with this ‘one of our own’ tag - business is business.

Re Chong, there’s worse options out there for sure. I’ve always thought he lacks a bit of end product but plenty of desire and does a job defensively too. I’d take him over Placheta any day - Chong is a much better footballer.
Tyler showed he could more than cut it in the Champ in the first part of the season, he had some stand out performances and contributions. Yes he went off the boil for quite some time and struggled for form, but that was to due to probably obvious reasons. He then showed again in the last few games that he has the ability to be more than just an average Championship player.

The fact he showed he had the ability proves he already has made it at Championship level and that’s in a side that was new to the Championship let alone an established side with higher end squads and overall players around him.

I actually hope he’ll stay at OUFC (unless financially we need to cash in this summer) as with decent summer recruitment he could be really firing next season, especially if we can get him in the number 10 role (and that’s not as prime minister!) on a regular basis.

If Rowett tells the owners to "pi55 off" then I suspect that he'll be looking for another job pretty quickly.

And the Romeny is useless line is getting boring. He will benefit hugely from having a full preseason with us and I'll be amazed if he doesn't have a big impact in the future.

"The likes of goalkeeper Jamie Cumming, defenders Ciaron Brown, Greg Leigh, Sam Long and Elliott Moore, plus Ruben Rodrigues and Mark Harris are among those understood to have one year left on their deals." [Oxford Mail]

Interesting - suggests we only gave Cumming a 2 year deal. Must be an option in there though surely given our record of giving out 3 years to basically every man and his dog.

That’s why I say politely p**s off, there will be a conversation regarding an Indonesian player and Rowett will say no, unless he is top drawer.
Look no manager worth his salt is going to accept a player he doesn’t want and be expected to play him. Rowett strikes me as the sort of bloke who will walk away rather than do that.
I have always said from his first few games, that apart from the odd touch here and there,he couldn’t cut it in the Championship, nothing I’ve seen has changed my mind.
He will be a bit part player next season

I'm sure that GR would say it with diplomacy :)

I'd quite like to see Davis Keillor Dunn brought in to play in the 10 role if Tyler moves on. High six figures may well get that "Dunn"

I would be amazed if we don't have an option for a third year

Personally I don’t think Tyler should go anywhere! He will only get better playing in the Championship with us maybe next Summer transfer market he may go but he has a young family, new home and they are settled!

Wonder when we announce the retained list, I doubt it will be very exciting given most are under contract but other clubs seem to be doing theirs.

Although my impatience for a pretty mundane piece of news may be more to do with the fact that this already seems like its going to be a long close season with no play offs and no international tournament.

Really?
He hasn’t had an outstanding game for ages, if I was a scout watching him up until January my report would have been let’s go for this player and pay up to £5 million
Since January my report would read we could do better elsewhere,
I agree. He's been way off the level required in the Championship in my opinion, both technically and physically. A boy amongst men.

I'll receive pelters for saying this, but I think he's MASSIVLEY overrated, and particularly at this level he's absolutely useless as a wide player, and only half decent playing centrally. If he wasn't "one of our own" others would agree.

He's never gonna be able to compete physically at this level either, and there have been a number of times this season when it was embarrassing how easily he was outmuscled.

If he was a lot bigger and stronger, he'd have more scope to improve at this level, but given his diminutive size, and not even being particularly quick either, it's been a huge step up for him this season, and other than a few moments of quality earlier in the season, overall I don't think he's managed it, he's looked lost most of the time, and if I was a betting man, I'd put money on him eventually spending the majority of his career in league one, where he was clearly more comfortable.

Obviously, for his and our sake, I hope he goes on to prove me wrong, but given what I've seen of him at this level, if someone was to offer us £5m for him, I'd bite their hand off.

I await the abuse...

Teams who have underperformed usually announce their retained lists earliest to prove to the fans that they are cutting the "dead wood"

I disagree and I expect that Tyler will prove you wrong

You're obviously grotesquely wrong on this.

As others have said, playing as an attacker in a defensively minded team and even on the stats he's managed 3 goals and 6 assists as a 21 year old in his first full season at this level, which whatever you might think is better than only being half decent playing centrally.

No matter what happens next in his career he has competently competed at Championship level for a season.

This doesn’t apply to just Tyler
What we all have to remember is a professional footballers career is a short one. You are only one crunching tackle from your career being over. The best way you protect your young family is to get the best deal you can for as long as you can.
Take Murphy for example, I expect the extra year on his deal was the clincher if we offered the same as Pompey.
Obviously if clubs come in for a player and offer a decent deal, we as a club could match that. eg Brannagan to Blackpool, but if a top/big Championship club come in for Tyler I imagine his salary would at least double

Tyler away at Blackburn was the best performance of any of our players this season.
Really thought we wouldn’t see him again after January.

Yes, the Blackburn performance was his stand out game and you’re right it might well have been the individual performance of the season - he was unplayable. But a season is 46 games long and you can count on one hand the number of other games he had any sort of meaningful impact in. Some might even say we didn’t see him again after January.

No abuse from me, thats how I see it at the moment. I really hope we are wrong and he hits the form that we saw pre Christmas. But these Championship clubs work out players much quicker than League1 and I feel they bully Tyler. They can see what he is capable of so they stop it straight away. This applies to not just Tyler but Dembele, Placheta and Mills as well

Yeah I think Zwolle will be one of the games our team will be going too - hopefully looking at Eliano Reijnders.

Whereas his brother is probably off to Man City from AC Milan.
I wonder if the guys size would be an issue. He’s smaller than Tyler. I wonder if GR prefers a more physically imposing full back.
