What a great result today. With championship survival confirmed - thought we could get this thread up and running.

Will need to replace Nelson, ideally sign Matos, a quality wide player and at least two strikers… any names or ideas?

Could O’Dowda return?

Lots to do… COYY

Positions that are fine.
Goalkeepers (unless JC leaves)
Centre back (got 3. Helik, Moore and Brown)
Defensive midfield (Vaulks and cambran)
LB. Greg Leigh, Bennett and Currie to come in (Brown for cover). This is not an area to target.

Every other position needs strengthening. In order of priority:
Centre forward. Mark Harris is awful.
Central AM. We don’t have a player to unlock the low block around the area.
RB. Don’t think we can rely on Sam Long (or Kioso) next year.
RW/LW. I’m not totally sure exactly plays best where (is Cheese really best on the right? And Romeny?). But no winger has had more than 2 or 3 great games in a row without then falling out of form.

The biggest concern is the embargo shaped cloud hanging over us, but if that is sorted I'll trust the recruitment team to get us what we need.

Some of the signings last summer that might be considered failures (Sibley, Shemmy), were likely only made because of the embargo, not to mention the fact that the playoffs put our recruitment weeks behind our opponent's. It should be an exciting summer if Ed and team can work with no unnecessary barriers. We definitely should be much easier to sell ourselves to prospective targets now we've survived the first season.

Radio Oxford suggested this has now been resolved and announcement would be made shortly- I’m sure our owners would not allow this to impact the transfer window actively 🙏🏼

is cheese a failure?
On the list of signings since last summer, he’s far from bottom.
Phillips, Sibley, Marselino and Scarlett all far worse
Has he been worse than Dembele? Or Ter Avest?
Only Vaulks stands out as being ‘better’. And he was crap until Rowett had a welly throwing competition in training.

For me the current squad breaks down like this:

High Championship Quality:
Jamie Cumming
Ciaron Brown
Ben Nelson*

Decent Championship Quality:
Michal Helik
Elliott Moore
Cameron Brannagan
Will Vaulks
Alex Matos*

Potential Decent-High Championship Quality:
Tyler Goodrham
Stan Mills
Ole Romeny
Jack Currie

Everyone else is at best inconsistent Champ or top end league 1 quality.

Obviously the big issue is the lack of attackers in those top 2 sections, and that two of those in there are on loan. Nelson we have no chance but Matos I think we have a fair chance of signing. In my opinion priorities need to be:

1. Striker
2. Nelson replacement
3. CAM
4. Matos and another CM
5. Wingers
6. Improving any other positions where possible

O'Dowda would give us experience, and coverage both on the wing and at wing back, but I think I'd only want him if we could offload a couple of others (ie Dale and/or Phillips) as a straight upgrade.

Also, I really like Gatlin and want him to make it with us, but I don't want to be getting to the end of the window and hearing "Gatlin could do a job as one of our strikers". A proper Championship goalscorer is absolutely imperative if we want to stay up next season.

I agree with 90% of this. But if 3 of your top 5 Oxford players are centre backs (excluding Nelson, who would make 4) then how can you conclude that our second most pressing concern in the transfer window is getting a new centre back? Bizarre.

George Elek on the Dub seemed to think O'Dowda was a distinct possibility.

I think Nelson will be way out of our league unless it's on another loan.

I'd love us to sign Matos permanently.

Will be an interesting window one way or the the other.
If we signed O'Dowda we would be calling out the recruitment team for such a poor signing .41 matches 2 goals & 2 assists .
Ex players that have just been relegated and under performed for the last 2 seasons .

Personally I don't think he's been a failure, but he's not set the world alight either and I would hope that he gets less minutes next season because we've signed somebody better.

Phillips - can see why he was signed, but it's not worked out.
Sibley - panic buy when we were under embargo.
Marselino - not a first team signing, can't judge recruitment team for it.
Scarlett - not good enough off the ball.
Dembele - important player, has pace, is an outlet, draws fouls. Can hopefully improve end product.
Ter Avest - good player, probably first choice next season.
Vaulks - useless on his own, showed his class when we changed to a 2-man midfield.

We HAVE to score more goals, we just don’t create anywhere near enough.

Top of the shopping list should obviously be a striker but wingers who are both a creative outlet and know how to score a goal are essential too. Dembele, Placheta, Phillips and Mills aren’t a good enough set of wide players if we want to consolidate in the championship again next year.

There’s so many exciting players in League One who we should be looking at, for one I would drop an absolute bomb for Poku from Peterborough, that would be a genuine star signing.

My list to move on;

Simon Eastwood

Joe Bennet (I think will go age/injuries)

Thorniley

Kioso (not sure GR rates him)

Sibley (as above)

McEachran

Philip (doubt we will find any takers)

El Miz (not sure he fits)

Dale

Goodwin

O’donkor

Woltman
I had literally forgotten about some of those. But today I dont want a lot of talk about which of our regulars are not ‘championship quality’ and should be somehow ditched. They were all heroes today and for much of the season. I think it’s clear where we need reinforcements and trust that the recruitment team are already on it.

Genuinely forgot that McEachrane was still at the club.
Wonder what his body fat percentage is these days?
