Unpopular opinion but I'm a little bit underwhelmed so far by our transfers ...some good players in there but I'd hope to see a couple more top notch starters .
Vaulks has added alot ( despite a couple of goals down to him) Cumming has started excellent as well but while plenty of promise from some others I'm suprised that our best performers so far are all from last season ...Brown, Harris ,Goodrhsm ,Cam Bran, Moore.
Would like a real quality left winger although hoping PP becomes that.
Early days yet though so plenty of time for the new guys to really settle in and shine .
Yes an unpopular opinion but not surprised it got a thumbs up from our resident doom monger gukip.
Vaulks, Cumming, El Mizouni already making an impact. Phillips starting to get up to speed. Then several players getting up to speed not yet properly available, Scarlett, Ter Avest, Ebiowei.
A couple of more players still to come.
That doesn't include Sibley.

I think your expectations are unreasonable but hey if you can find the cash to throw to buy £1m + players then we will be very grateful

Would agree to a certain extent, depends on how well Ter Avest fits in and if we have any real pace out wide.
The likes of Currie and Sibley plus the two loans are an unknown factor here.
To compete in this league you have to be able to bring on players who will give the team more impetus and we haven’t got that yet
Seems to me we really need to strengthen at the back and up front and out wide with proven Championship players
As you say the best players so far have been the ones who were here last season and what we need is an upgrade which as yet we haven’t got.Placheta and El Mizouni are good players but in my opinion not an upgrade.

So I feel that Philips and Vaulks are upgrades (we had Cummings last season)

Currie Sibley Ebiowei and Scarlett we haven’t seen enough of to comment yet. Same goes for Kioso

What I would like to see is whoever we bring in will be good enough to go straight into our starting eleven

For those who don't open these articles, and those that do but read others things into it, this is what Des actually said.

“I’d love to have them in before 11pm on Friday, but I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see what is possible.

“The earlier the better because it allows us to plan potentially for the weekend, but if it goes down to the wire to get what we want, then so be it.”

No mention of positions he's targeting, and he would hope to get players in early to potentially use at the weekend. But as with all clubs, they're prepared to go to the deadline if needed.

Yet the first two responses are about not getting in a winger and Des not using new recruits!

25 man squad?

Cumming / Ingram

Ter Avest / Kioso

Moore / Long

Brown / *New CB*

Bennett / Leigh

Vaulks / McEachran

Brannagan / El Mizouni

Rodrigues / Sibley

Phillips / Placheta / *New Winger*

Goodrham / Ebiowei / Dale

Harris / Scarlett / *New ST*

That would mean players left out:

Eastwood
Thorniley
Currie
Woltman
Edwards - given a shirt number?
Goodwin

“I’d love to have them in before 11pm on Friday“. Assuming we’re not considering free agents already, I’m not sure there is much option.
Also, the reference to CF and CB is the Oxford Mail’s interpretation, rather than a statement from Des.
The nature of Placheta’s injury may impact our target list too.

surely wining promotion is by definition an indication that a significant proportion of last seasons team is ready to make the step up, with the transfer window being an opportunity to add to/improve that line-up - or not, as time and patience will tell?

Baffles me that a transfer window that has seen us strengthen the depth of the squad in a way that would’ve left even some of the most positive of us on this site pleasantly surprised, is now being regarded by some as underwhelming.

Do we still need two or three players? Yes. But show me a club that doesn’t.

A lot of people seem to view squad building as a Wordle; something to be completed. But in reality a squad is never finished - it’s always being tinkered with and priorities adjusted. Even once the window closes, there’ll be supporters of every single club in the country who will *still* be saying ‘we needed another player in this position’ or ‘ I can’t believe we weren’t in for him.’

There is no squad we could assemble that would please everyone, but even if we weren’t to bring in anyone else, we’d still of had a decent window and have a squad capable of staying up.

And isn’t it amazing how the players we have are never as good as we hoped they’d be, while those we supposedly miss out on would always of been better?

Never change, Yellows Forum. Never change.

Generally speaking, the players already with us have been the better players so far because they are used to playing together! It is a team game - knowing where your team mate is likely to be, what they are likely to do and what runs they might make is something that can only be really learned in matches (rather than on the training pitch - opposition players have the habit of getting in the way or doing something unexpected!). As the new players get to know their team mates, both they and the team will look more comfortable.

It's not just the incoming transfers, but the outgoings too. We had huge interest in Tyler last season, and was probably the most watched of all our players. That interest would have manifested into decent bids during the summer but we acted early in getting an improved and extended contract in front of him which has enabled Tyler to focus on being at Oxford (for now).

We did the same with Cam, although I think that he was always looking to stay. However, it also showed that the club are willing to support long term loyalty that will help in conversations with Ciaron Brown, Mark Harris and others.

We also enforced the extension with Marcus McGuane whilst looking to move him on for a fee, and my understanding is that whilst he was unlikely to be in contention for first team starts this season, he was treated well and supported in getting the right move. Some clubs/managers pretty much ostracise those out of contention, but we appear to be doing things the right way. This applies to Thorniley and, I suspect, Leigh, where the club are working just as hard to get the right deals for those leaving as they are with those coming in. Stuart Findlay was also someone who was supported with another loan that recognised the best interests of him and us.

Even the Josh Murphy deal was handled as well as it could have been. He was offered the best offer that the club felt appropriate, which was beyond several other offers on the table. Portsmouth came back at the 12th hour with an offer that we were unwilling to match and we parted ways. That is exactly how we should conduct out business, even if it means that we miss out on some.

So I would rate our transfer business and squad management throughout this summer as exceptional and credit must go to Ed and his team who have fundamentally changed the way we operate. And I have every confidence that any further movement will also be right for all parties.

Spot on.

We are continually improving…I’d say at quite a pace. By aug 31st, we need to have recruited a squad who can be coached to stay out of trouble until Xmas. Then after Xmas, improve again.
