Transfer News Summer 2024 Transfer Window Thread

Donley and Al Hamadi both coming in would be perfect imo. That gives us 4 striker options with Harris and Goodwin. Also plenty of flexibility with Harris able to play out wide and Donley able to drop deeper into an attacking midfield role if needed, an extra option to play in that area certainly wouldn’t hurt.

Also personally would try and keep both Leigh and MM if possible as I think they can both offer something to the squad at this level. Leigh as second choice LB is quality and also gives us flexibility to chance systems to something with a more LWB role. MM still has something to prove, I don’t think there’s any harm in keeping him as a squad player and he may just come into his own in this league. Who knows

Keeper wise it feels like

Fight for No 1: Cumming and A N Other
3rd Choice: Eastwood
Loan Out: Knightbridge and Brearey (who seemed to be around the first week, but not noticed in Spain)
Youth: Marriott

Signing both Donley and Al-Hamadi continues the trend of also signing players who can play elsewhere if necessary. With both being able to occupy different positions and potentially change mid-game to suit a game-plan or a specific match situation.

Both have good work rates and know how to get the ball in the net directly or indirectly. Could be fantastic additions and I certainly believe we could carry both as well as Harris, Goodwin and the other midfielders.

Goodwin will stay, as will Leigh I think. Thorniley could stay but that like others will depend on options if he has been allowed to leave. New centre-back is a must anyway in my opinion, as I think we still need some more Championship experience, or at least someone with balance to play both LCB and RCB. Still have those such as McIntyre and Franklin in defence who could and likely are impressing in pre-season too, with forward Elliott-Wheeler also a very very promising player in attack.

I can see us making 7-8 more signings.

Seems unlikely Leigh will be second choice left back this season though? He was that last season by the end and we have paid money out for another left back. Maybe he stays but I struggle to see us going with 3 left backs and also him not wanting to play much. People keep saying it’s the championship so you need more players but I doubt many clubs go with 3 specialist in each full back position.

George Elek asked on The Dub if Leigh might also cover LCB this season - similar to Long at RCB - if we play a back three at points this season (which seems plausible given how many midfielders we have and 3-4-3 being one of Des' preferred systems to coach). As we seem to be prioritising another RB/RWB, it wouldn't surprise me if Long and Leigh are being earmarked as versatile options who allow us to switch systems, and so I probably wouldn't see them as being as 3rd choices for a specific position, but reliable options in multiple positions.

That said, I'd expect and hope for us to add a CB this summer who offers us a bit more in terms of either passing or dribbling out the back (McNally for the latter would do nicely).

If you give Leigh the job of attacking the ball head on, he wont lose many headers will he? However, I still think we need pace in the centre.

My suspicion is that we're working on a variety of formations, and players fit differently into those. In the formation we finished the season with last year, Bennett is your left back.

But Leigh would be your best bet if you're playing wing backs, which we may want to do on occasion this year to give us extra numbers in defence. I don't know enough about Currie to know where he'd fit in in either, but he's still young lad and lacks the experience that Bennett and Leigh have, and so his 2024/25 season may be more about learning from them than trying to force his way into the starting line-up this season.

Also - and I know there's a lot of the window left - our recruitment so far seems to have been focussed more on central midfield than width, a which reminds me more of the way Manning sued to set up, with 'wide' forwards like Bodin and Goodrham playing much more narrow, and the width being provided by the full backs.

Striker wise Aaron Connelly free agent, along with Al Hamadi would be good

Josh Coburn / Ben Doak loan 2 others
I'd assume that Connelly would be well out of out wage budget wouldn't he? Good player but think he's too far out of reach and will have good interest from elsewhere.

Coburn is a fair shout though.

I would guess a low end champ team would be the next logical step after being released from hull? Anyone know why they released him?

He’s supposed to be a bit of a piece of work, not one I’d necessarily want especially if we’re fighting for points
