Find it mad there are people suggesting we don’t need a striker of better quality than Harris & Goodwin.

It’s almost like they don’t want us to spend the money to give us the best possible chance of having a decent season.

A quality striker is a MUST.
My objection was people saying we need two, but do think we’ll struggle to find a striker who’ll be as concrete to perform for us in our system as Harris and happily willing to sign for Oxford over the other Championship clubs who’d clearly want that player.

Al-Hamadi on loan might be one dependent on if others put bids in, but it’s not the same as signing a left back.

Far more concerned about the wide areas personally than anywhere else. We need a striker for sure, but we do have a very credible option who’s perfect for how we play. Replacing Murphy a bigger concern.

There are no centre backs there capable of keeping us in the championship, I really hope that's the priority now.
Ciaron brown is a defender you need for championship headers blocks tackles clearances puts his head anywhere look at the Peterborough game and Bolton he plays better against teams when we don’t have the ball we ain’t gonna be having the ball like last season no need for a ball playing centre back

Similar principle to the striker situation. We need another one for depth whatever, so hopefully we find someone with real quality. A proven one at Champs level would cost fortunes though, so might be that sticking Brown/Moore is our best option.

I feel Moore/brown have a partnership now and know how eachother play can’t start experimenting with a new centre back could cost us points much needed

Harris will be first choice
I’m less convinced of this. Since Des arrived we’ve spent £400k on Goodwin and the only sustained link this summer with any merit is Al Hamadi. Both very similar - bigger lads, physical and a focal point. That isn’t to say Harris won’t play a big part but the evidence suggests Des leans towards a different profile - very much like McKenna at Ipswich. Could that mean Harris goes wide to avoid dropping out? Maybe. But I actually think Goodwin is more likely to start the first game at this point depending on how his pre season goes fitness wise and who else we sign.

Yes; agree with this. Harris won’t play centrally up front and won’t be our main striker.

If we go with Goodwin, Harris and one other, we are in for a long season.

Goodwin hasn’t proved his fitness, never mind his ability. I have high hopes but he hasn’t even shown he has a tough robust side to him yet.

Harris obviously offers plenty, but if it’s one up front, we couldn’t hang our hat on him scoring enough goals. It was only 15 league goals with all those minutes last year.

That would leave a lot of pressure on one other player - likely a PL loan - who could be hit or miss.

It has to be 2 in.
Feel like this is based on an out-dated view that only our strikers will score goals this season. We’re yet to see who our final wing signings will be, but it’s also worth noting we’ll have midfielders such as Goodrham, Rodrigues, Brannagan and Sibley playing for us, all four of which have goals in them.

Given Harris finished the season strong and we payed £400k for a long-term prospect in Goodwin, I’d find it unlikely we’d sign anything more than the striker on loan that we need - certainly if they then take up a squad place that a winger could occupy.

Ciaron Brown once shot a plane out of the sky by pointing at it and saying "BANG!"

Would obviously play a backup role.. I’d like to see us sign someone of a higher calibre to be honest. Would much prefer Al Hamadi or a permanent striker.. I could see Cosgrove suiting Des’ style.
He was very highly rated at Derby and was quite the coup for palace when they first signed him. Not sure what has happened to him since that move though, whether there has been injury’s or just a lack of settled game time. I don’t think he’d be coming here as a back up though.

Will radio Oxford be speaking to Des at the game today? If so will be interesting to see if there’s any updates regarding incomings.

Back-up? Don't think so. He's not had a loan where he's quite caught fire yet, but he's very highly thought of. When Hull signed him on loan, there was a huge queue of clubs after him.

Listened to Buckingham’s post-match interview. I didn’t come away from it with the impression that any incomings are imminent. He didn’t mention anything other than wide-areas, either.

I’ve no doubt it’s a difficult task but tick-tock and all that.
The only positive is that I feel Des is likely to keep things very close to his chest, unlike KR who would obviously shout his mouth off at every possible chance.

Fairly surprised that we haven’t already strengthened up top; given the Norwich game is 14 days away. I would’ve thought it to be the top priority to sign wide and attacking players particularly with the predicted loss of Browne and Murphy incoming but voila…. Of course bringing players to the club is far more nuanced than signing a signature and throwing a shirt on but I’m surprised we’ve left it as late as we have in pre-season for positions that we were already featherweight in.

Someone enlighten me.

before anyone comes for me, I’m not criticising - we’ve had a good window thus far in other areas.. Just observing.

Does worry me as well if they think both of them will score enough goals to keep us in the championship, we need a loan signing and a proven championship striker in my opinion.

And? It was a pre-season game.
Squad is miles away from even giving us a fighting chance quite honestly. We can all hope but we should have done much more business than we have already.

We have to be ruthless, we are nowhere near as good a side as Plymouth when they went up last year. That’s a good benchmark of what it will take to stay up.

We won't have finished our business yet. We've made a lot of decent signings. This is miles off what it was like under Robbo.

It's not so much that we should have done more business - nine players in already is a pretty impressive haul - it's that the business we have done has been excellent, but has been wholly focused on certain areas of the pitch. And as a result, we are very, very short up top.

The fact that we're two weeks out and the two players we have to play behind Sparky are a 19 year old striker who really should be playing at a League 2/National League club right now and a 20 year old who's shown very clearly that his best position is CAM is......concerning.

Need to be bringing multiple forwards in this week, really, if we're going to be up to speed for Norwich.
