The Matete loan was terminated early, wasn't it? Or was he just sent back to his club to recover from injury there, while still technically being on loan with us?
I beleive that was solely because of an injury. For example we didnt even shift back Sonny Perkins

I reckon there is a shed load of stuff being overlooked here.
Dale could be the perfect right side partner for Ter Avest and Kioso. Dale is ever so disciplined and switched on similar to Alex Macdonald was.
I’m sure there will be developments in the team and plenty of wheeling and dealing in January. Far too early to write anyone off.

On Dale, I think an underrated element of our summer business and management has been how we’ve managed the continuity from last season. It would have been very easy/tempting to start the new season with all the flashy new toys we’ve brought in in the summer and chuck them all in, on the basis that the squad last year was, on paper, one that just about scraped 6th in the league below. But we haven’t done that.

In our last game, even with Moore out injured, we still started nine players who could have lined up for us last year (Kioso and Phillips, I think, the exceptions). The quality coaching, to coach those players into a system, and continuity has been a key part in our relative success so far this season. I think over the course of the season we’ll slowly phase in the likes of Ter Avest, Dembele, El Miz and possibly the likes of Nelson, Ingram, Sibley and Phillips into our strongest XI, but I think there’s a lot to be said for showing faith in the players who got us to this level and who obviously possess the traits that Des values in players.

It sends a strong message to all players that, if you’re willing to put a shift in and contribute to the side, you’ll get a chance, which I think is so positive. Bombing players like Dale out at this stage, as some seem to be advocating, would be a mistake, I think.

Wasn't that what almost got us a transfer ban? He may have gone back to Sunderland to recuperate under a mutual agreement between the clubs, but technically he was still our player and we were supposed to be paying for him.

It's one of the few things that's in the public sphere. We even know that it was Invoice 76595 for Matete's April wages that our former Finance Officer decided to ignore!

I think Dale on the right would be the perfect foil for Dembele on the left; we can keep Dembele higher on the left wing while Dale sits a bit deeper

If Tyler Goodrham makes a habit of cutting in from the right and hitting curlers with his left foot in off the post then I’m not sure anyone else will be taking that right wing spot from him!

Dannie Bulman underscores that.

I loved Dale's addition when he joined in January. We were drifting and I believe he was the exact sort of player we needed. He raised standards on the pitch and connected with fans, he's got a tremendous attitude and is very hard working and diligent - the sort of winger you love having in front of you if you're a full back. That said, even at League 1 level I always felt he was a bit limited. He's quick without being rapid and has some skill without being tricky. He would have a field day against lower League 1 full backs but the better ones would work him out. When you take that into The Championship then I can't see him getting anything out of players like van Ewijk at Coventry.

Given that the window is now shut he's here until January anyway. Although I don't see him as a starter, I won't be disappointed to see him in a starting line up. We've already got a couple of injuries out wide, with a young player in Ebiowei who will need a bit of time, so I still see him getting a fair amount of game time for the foreseeable future. He'll never let anyone down and I can see his skillset useful for when we're scrapping to try and see out a win or hold onto a point. From what I've seen of him so far, I don't think he's good enough to be a regular starter at this level (although that could depend on how attacking his right back is), but he has 3 months to make a mark and he deserves his chance as much as anyone.

Similar mistakes were made when we got promoted from the Conference and League 2. We tried to upgrade the squad too quickly and in the process let some really pivotal players go on the basis that we were 'upgrading' them, but hindsight shows that we should have given them a go. The immediate examples that spring to mind are Bulman, Matt Green, Jake Wright (at LG1), and Danny Hylton.

Dale was central to out upturn last season. He may not be as pacey or skilful as some of our new wingers, but he is very good at pressing and has a tremendous workrate. He'll get a lot of minutes this season.

Still would be more than good enough in the championship, he had an off day in the playoff final but he would be one of my top picks in all honesty
So, to reiterate, a 29 year with no Championship experience, who's shortcomings were cruelly exposed in the play-off final - sounds like the right man to me.

We didn't adequately replace Dannie Bulman that season so not quite so easy either. The central midfielder replacements were Asa Hall, Simon Heslop and Josh Payne, a downgrade.

Wilder brought in experienced midfielder Paul McLaren that season who was a cut above Hall, Heslop, Payne and Bulman.

He didn’t sign on till the middle of that season when Wilder realised he had made a mistake and that Josh Payne wasn’t good enough to replace Bulman.

Bulman went onto get a promotion out of league two while McClaren retired about a year and a half later so wouldn’t say he was a cut above him at that stage of his career.

Josh Payne was a really talented footballer, technique wise, but nothing like Bulman. Completely different types of players so it was a major balls up to think he'd replace him. Payne really didn't hit the heights he should have but still made a good career at National League level.
