But by January, Phillips, Placheta, Dembele and Edwards will likely be back. If Nelson goes, one injury to Moore, who misses the odd game or two regularly often, and we are left with Long and Thorniley as depth options

But by February there is a very good chance that Phillps, Placheta and Edwards will be injured again going by their previous records.

In January, I would hope we would release/allow to leave on a free Thorniley to free up a place. His only matches in 2024 have curiously been three different cup games - FA Cup, EFL Trophy and the League Cup.

Edwards should be released. Being brilliant for a couple of games just isn't enough.

Dale should go on loan. As mentioned before, should we be relegated, I'd like to see him back for a League 1 OUFC. As it is, he's not quite quick enough or tricky enough at this level.

Ebiowei has two months to impress. Anything less than good then goodbye.

Goodwin needs some football. A loan for him too perhaps?

Jack Currie should come back into the fold as well since Bennett may not be match-ready for some time.

As for signings, I'll leave it to those who know best on those. Some robust players would be useful.

What about Kwame Poku at Peterborough according to Transfermarket his contract expires in June 2025. Just turned 23 and has 7 goals and 4 assists in the league this season
Wanted by Blackburn but we could show some interest. Would love him to join

Poku is top of my list! Dembele and Poku out wide with Tyler in the middle would be naughty!

We 100% need a specialist right-winger that can stay fit through the winter months. As much as I love him, Dale isn't up to it, and I hope that Ebiowei is sent back in Jan.

Lots of work to do in January!

Thats true we were in for him early in the summer, however we could get a cut price for him in jan as his contracts up at the end of the season. Can waldron work his magic

Darragh MacAnthony wouldn't sell JCH last January for a cut price deal, even though he was leaving on a free in the summer.

Can't see that he would change how he operates this year, unless for some reason he doesn't believe that Posh can get back into the playoff race.

Suspect it's seven figures or no deal for Poku.

We only have Edwards under contract till January, he needs to be fit for a decent run of games before I would extend his contract again, had about two good halves then been injured in the time we have had him.
Unfortunately, I am starting to agree with this. If his comeback from the current injury isn't pretty swift (i.e. we get to see him play a fair few matches before the window) or he gets crocked again (however 'unluckily'), then I think we ought to move on. He is an exciting player, but if we play a system that relies on quick wingers, we can't get ourselves in another situation like the current one.

He joined on Sept 1st 2023, so has been with us for over 14 months. We have seen him 8 times. And if anyone says 'he is cheap', I'll reply 'squad places'!

Our targets at the moment are for 1 new striker and 1 new centre back
Lots of names from england but a few foreign lads on the list include

Shota Fujio
Manprit Sarkaria
Kim Ju-Sung
Moustapha Mbow
Loic Mbe Soh
Gonna have to get our thinking caps on for a song about any of these

January is Pivotal.

No passengers and Des needs to be ruthless.
Malcolm - needs a L1 loan.
Edwards - big question mark. Needs to be making a weekly contribution to the cause.
Goodwin - ? Where is he?
Dale - Is he good enough?
Nelson? - what the injury like?

In my mind, in comes a Centre Back, Centre Mid, Currie back in, 2 wingers and a striker.

Malcolm isn't ours to loan.

Besides that, I think it's too early to answer what I think is the main question - where are we with injuries?

The answer to that will dictate to a large degree what we do in January, and I'd caution against any expectation that there'll be wholesale changes because that's a rarity at any club, let alone one that brought in so many players in the Summer.

I expect the seriousness of Bennett's injury may dictate that Currie is recalled, and Edwards needs to prove he's capable of stringing some games together before a decision is made on extending his contract beyond January. However, the way Des has spoken about him in the past makes me think that he has significant credit in the bank with the manager.

Goodwin will, I'd hope, be given a chance to show if he's able to contribute meaningfully before January, and it might be that the sheer volume of injuries we have out wide and at centre back dictate another re-think on the formation that gives him a chance, even if it's from the bench to start with. If not, a loan would probably do him the world of good.

Beyond that, any changes may be in the loan department. I'm in what appears to be the minority who thinks Ebiowei has shown some promise, and I hope he's able to do a Dane and start putting in the type of performances that will get everyone behind him. But we do need to be decisive, and if he isn't demonstrating he's able to impact games to Des's liking, then we can consider an upgrade if one is available.

I'd love to keep Nelson for the rest of the season as he's been extremely impressive. Fingers crossed his injury isn't so bad that he's out for prolonged period, but is perhaps just bad enough that Leicester decide he's better off getting back to fitness and form with us, his absence hopefully alleviated somewhat by returning wingers and reverting to four at the back.

But with Summer being mostly about raising the ceiling of the squad, I would expect January to be more about raising the floor, combined with making sure we're making the most of the squad size available to us. I expect Thorniley will be available (as he was, unsucessfully, in the summer) and even if he doesn't manage to find anywhere else, we have a chance to bring in someone else to take his squad place, which we weren't able to do in the Summer because of the timing of Bennett's injury.

However, all of this will be dictated by the most over-looked aspect of any transfer window - who is available to us. Take Ebiowei for example. By January, Des will have a very, very good idea of what he's capable of, and whether he can have an impact in games in the second half of the season. Assuming Des sees something there (his continued presence in the squad would say he does; his not starting despite the absence of so many wingers is less convincing), would he sacrifice 5/6 months of integrating a player, coaching the way we play, etc. to then have to potentially go through the same process, for potentially the same or less in return, with a new player?

Will also depend where we are in the table as well...
