Now we finally know we will be in League 1 next year, what type of players should Liam Manning and his team be looking at bringing in to push on next year?

I'm not sure how the recruitment structure at OUFC now works to be honest.

I guess Manning sits down with the head of recruitment and they discuss? It is possible Manning is more removed from the process than we think?

I should think those discussions have already started for sure.

New gk should be top of the list along with 2 strikers, 2 wingers, 2 midfielders, lb and rb. Don't let the last 2 games disguise the past season.

The last 9 games (at least), Easty has been excellent. Beaten by a couple of absolute worldies, and goals where he has made initial good saves and would expect the defence to then clear.

He may have been vulnerable to shots from distance this season, but it's amazing how much better he looks now that he has a defence doing their job in front of him.

I wouldn't be against a better keeper, but Easty deserves as much credit as anyone for us staying up.

I'm actually excited to see what they do with the existing players too, in terms of improving them. Listening to Joseph's interview, that goal was directly related to work from the training ground. I think Findlay has looked much more composed under Manning and statistically speaking we do well with him in the team. Interesting to see if he stays. With so many players under contract, it might not be as simple as getting rid of a load of players and bringing a load in. There will need to be takers for those not wanted who are under contract.

A great striker who’s strong, pacy, can hold the ball up and play others in, and score goals. A League One Didier Drogba.

A battling but classy DCM who can anchor the midfield, make a pass and keep play ticking over. A League One Kalvin Phillips or Declan Rice.

Macaulay Langstaff from Notts county would be ideal.

Eastwood certainly looks better now he’s got a properly organised and coached defence in front of him.

In fact you could say all the players look better now they are being properly organised and coached. Eastwood, Moore, Findlay Browne and Murphy have noticeably improved under Manning.

I would also add Long and Joseph to that list.

Let's hope it's better than the last couple of windows.

I do have concerns though. There's no director of football and the jury is still out on Ferguson and Williams being able to sell the club which wont be easy after a 19th place finish. Manning has only previously managed under a sporting director/DoF so hasn't been responsible for recruitment previously. Our head of recruitment was part of the s**t show that was the last two windows and somehow got a promotion out of it.

I fear many of the issues that led to two poor windows still remain. Hope I'm wrong.

I don't think a director of football is a necessity at our level, particularly with the losses we make. I am not convinced the cost is worth it. Don't get me wrong what happened with Robinson in the transfer window was awful but equally there are plenty of examples of clubs with no director of football having great transfer windows/policies. MK has a director of football and they completely ballsed up the summer transfer window.

We need multiple positions (and really need pace throughout) - but in terms of who and where they come from I'd settle for a slightly reduced version of what I wanted last Summer - namely cherry picking the best players from smaller clubs at this level/the level below (ideally all having been playing regular football).

I'm thinking the likes of Alfie May (Cheltenham) and Sam Nombe (Exeter) for starters.

Then some interesting loans. Rather than young gambles I'd rather the route of players struggling for game time at the level above but with experience and pedigree (as we have done previously - Whyte, Browne, Joseph even). Players like Kane Wilson (Bristol City) would interest me - superb for FGR in their promotion but seemingly not really fancied by Pearson.

I think there should be enough space to get 5 or 6 quality (value) signings and complement with a smattering of loans to make us reasonably competitive - and potentially better than that if we get them spot on.

Striker
CDM
Left Back/LWB
Right Back/RWB
Striker
Centre Back

In that order, ideally. Top it up with some loanees and we'll be in a good spot.

100% agree with the top five in your list - those are the absolutely pivotal signings.

CB would be a bit of a luxury if we do sign two new full backs. We'll already have Moore, Findlay, Brown, Long & Negru in the building - so unless we move one or more of them on, and then upgrade, I think CB is one of the last positions we'll look at.

Manning has done brilliantly since he came in - he's clearly an outstanding coach. Now we find out if he's got any skill at recruitment!
(the last summer at MKD would be a bit of a worry, but it sounds like that was mostly their DoF's fault.....we shouldn't complain, it's helped us stay up!)

Alfie May is a must as is engaging the services of Kyle Joseph…mind you he will probably go back to Swansea.
I would love Cameron Brannagan to be on a longer contract. He loves the club and Manning will get the best out of him.
Eastwood has certainly improved under the Maning era

Re. Centre backs.

Could Negru be the next Dickie, Atkinson etc style signing? He’s bided his time and looked effective when called upon.

A full pre-session and plenty of minutes in PSFs and we may have a first teamer in the building already.
Negru didn't seem to be a ball playing CB
He didn't play much though, so maybe wrong?

Five loans ending and four players OOC who we should probably expect to see moving on in Anderson, Jones, Taylor and Gorrin. That would be nine out.

Baldock can’t play. Henry can barely play based on the last 18 months. Bodin won’t get fitter or be available more often at this stage. Yanic looks shot and is barely getting a kick now. Murphy? f**k knows. One of the keepers will go, maybe even two. The kids (plus largely unknown quantities like Negru and Smyth who have joined from part-time leagues over the last year) might or might not be up to scratch. Some will be, some won’t be, and some will go on loan in order to find out.

There could legitimately be over a dozen players about to leave the club, with one or two staying for their final year who will probably be lucky to play 50% of games. And that’s assuming nobody fit, able and contracted leaves alongside those whose bones are half dust. I can see Brannagan asking himself some difficult questions and Findlay wondering whether the other side of the border is where he would rather be.

This window will be the first of several needed to sort things. We’ll be needing plenty in. Thankfully, we’ll be recruiting for the third division rather than the fourth.

Good luck, mods.
