Current Player Thread Stanley Mills

Very good again yesterday! Murphy aside, the best winger we’ve had in the last few years? Great engine, pace, and puts in a great cross.
Hopefully we keep him next season regardless of which league we are in

I love him.

Apparently Portsmouth fans were fuming that he was laughing after their full back got red carded.

He's been fantastic and the improvement over the last few months has been really impressive. Arguably could have had a handful of assists over this weekend, the crosses he put in for Lankshear and Harris on Friday were excellent and it was criminal no one was on the end the one he put right across the face of goal in the second half.

His crossing is Premier League standard at times - can you imagine how many assists he would get if there was a higher calibre striker that could anticipate them?

I said last season if I were a striker I'd far rather play with him than our other wingers (not a massive call as they were Shemmy and Dembele at the time) because you know the ball is coming in early and chaces are he will hit a good area. It's a bit of a numbers game but I reckon he must put in as many good open play deliveries as the rest of the team put together, I forgot about the one he put in for Lankshear that got pulled up for a foul in the first half too. It's not hit and hope either, on the extended highlights after our goal there's a great example of him picking out Cam on the edge of the box rather than just slamming it in, a better layoff from Brannagan and Donley is coming onto it and it's a presentable chance. One of the first names on the team sheet at the moment.

I would say first name at the moment, if he got injured it would be very hard for us to get a win as he is a goal threat, creator and outlet while also getting up and down.

Probably going to be getting offers for him and Currie over the summer, so with the budget constraints of FFP can see them both going sadly.

If we stay up I don't think that we need to sell them ( presumably BDK will be off and raise a lot of money).
It us just that Mills value is rocketing, snd every player will have his price.
If we go down? There are lots of players who will want championship football including Mills.

I can't see us getting a lot for him after this season, he struggled after a bright start then got injured.

I would be surprised to see Currie here after the Millwall game, whatever division we are in, I suppose other transfers will be more dependant on that, can't see Mills wanting to play league one after showing he is good enough for the Championship though.

BDK cost what £1m?
He proved that he was a decent Championship player and allegedly clubs were looking at him.
I would be surprised if he didnt go for £m a few.

BDK cost c.£3m Euros based on what proper itk folk have said on here.

One thing I love about Millsy, apart from his pace and athleticism, is that he is genuinely two-footed (just not in the way Ogilvie was). He can cross with his right or is equally comfortable to check back in with his left, which means the defender doesn't know where he's going next. It's a trait that probably more professional footballers should have (given that it's their job to kick balls with their feet, you'd think more would actually train their weaker foot), but I'm just glad Stan's using it to his advantage

Joey was the original at this. Doing it before it became fashionable.

Out of interest how much do you really think BDK is worth?

I have no idea.
I understand that there were clubs interested. If we paid €3.5m and he proved himself as a decent Championship player in a poor team, his value will havd gone up surely?

Probably is going to be our most desirable asset come the summer transfer window.
Disagree Currie,Spencer, then BDK, then maybe Mills but he really needs 1 more top season in championship to get the value he's done a Murphy this season and turned it on late and just back from long injury.

Anyway if I was any of 3 of 4 I'd stay another season excel and get a bigger move. BDK excluded as we were his move to UK to get him his bigger move

Mills has been really good this season and it won’t be lost on a host of championship clubs that his performances have been so good.
I hope he stays but in all honesty, I can see bids for him come the summer.
I’m sure there will be bids but I’m not sure they’ll be high enough to interest us. Let’s hope so anyway.

I thought George Elek got this spot on speaking in the Dub. Every player has their price but we should not sell Mills unless he meets our (presumably very big) valuation

I agree. But underpinning all that is the need not to hold back his career. We wouldn’t want to keep him if he’s offered a bigger/better contract at a “bigger” club in a higher division.
I’d love to keep him though, as he would be a cracker in League One.

Yep, with all things there is a balancing act. Unhappy players can cause cultural problems (although I dont think Stan is one of those).

Maybe I am easily swung but there is a culture here that the players buy in to and makes them want to stay. Will Lankshear and his beautiful club comments, I spoke to Jack Currie ahead of the Wednesday game and he was adamant he loved the club and wanted to stay (it seemed very genuine) and we know from his dad that Stan loves it here. I think we can convince him for a season if we need to.

So Mills, Emarku, Tyler all in League One? Yes please. McDonnell and Cam (with Vaulks as required). These are all players that should dominate in League One (whilst acknowledging that the league isnt a walkover).

based on previous experience, those tasked with valuing our players(assets) have appeared to suffer from small club syndrome, by( IMO) low valuing our players who are sought after by so called bigger clubs, and also ended up accepting low, speculative offers time and time again

If a player wants to leave, let them go by all means, but at least hold out for the real market value, Oxford United are not a bargain basement club holding an everything must go sale. Which is how the club have often behaved in the past

Hard agree @Sarge

We’ll be keen to keep Mills but I wouldn’t be surprised if we cashed in on Currie, he’s not as important to the way we play and would be replaceable

Why it's business he's an asset, you pay the price or he stays.
This is the p.boro way and it works really well for them
Remember we started his career and came back when he was seriously injured. Loyalty counts in life!!!

I know football doesn’t work like this, but OUFC has done well by Stan Mills. We gave him the initial loan opportunity and then offered him a chance after a particularly serious injury. Of course in return he had delivered. So I hope he shows a bit of loyalty and sticks with us.

I’d like to see him here at the start of next season, time is on his side. Then by all means he reviews it at Christmas, if we’re mid/lower league 1 then fair enough give him the move.

If we can get away with Summer sales of BDK and one full back, perhaps with another fee for a squad player then that would seem fair enough to me. Yes we’ve got to stay within the rules, but we’ve also got to give ourselves a decent chance of a quick return.

You say that but there are past examples I think. Brannagan has always said that the club supported him over an eye issue and he wanted to show loyalty back to the club. Yes, there was the Blackpool thing and we had to match/top what they were offering but I still think a big reason Brannagan has stayed and performs the way he does is because of loyalty.

Why it's business if he's injured we pay him.
So he goes if a club meets our valuation no jumble sale prices!
We made him! We were patient with him! So the door swings both ways

I think re- reading the article on the OWS when we re-signed him last January gives me hope that he may actually give us a season in league one.
Off the back of a nasty injury we signed him and he spoke of unfinished business and that the club felt like home. I imagine there will be interest from Charlton/ Pompey/ Preston type of clubs but he seems quite loyal and clearly likes being at the club.

I think we should be holding out for £3m which I can’t imagine too many would pay for him. Hopefully we show some intent to return to the Championship at the first time of asking and make Mills a top earner next year with the promise he can leave in 12 months if we don’t go up and have a suitable bid.

To most in the Championship, £3m is peanuts
Mills has proven to be a good winger in.the Championship, so I am.not sure that this will be anywhere near out of reach
